Jagadeesh P explains how to add game mechanics and storytelling to design projects. Use points, badges, and character arcs with heroes and villains to make your work more engaging and emotionally resonant.
Gaming market is valued at 12.9 billion dollar industry and people who are really working in the gaming related products are having a huge impact in terms of their revenue growth, everything. And also people who are working in the productive environment, they are becoming more productive like 50 to 60 percentage productive because of the gamification what they expect in their work life. So gamification is not only in the products, it's there in the lifestyle, it's there in the working culture, it's there in the every industries and it creates 80% of your engagement when it comes to gamification and storyfication to it. Okay, I'm going to add the storyfication also along with this, particularly if you're doing a design thinking methodology or a case study. If you're doing a project like that, how you can integrate the storyfication and gamification inside, I'm going to go into detail definitely. If you are a fresher, if you are someone who is experienced, who has a lot of projects for both of you, this is going to really flip your mindset in a different way. Let us take a lot of notes and and jump in. Welcome guys. Welcome to this Design for Change podcast. Thank you for staying tuning in with me. With this podcast we are going to impact 1 million students to get a freedom lifestyle of a design and a creative design before 2030. So I'm on a mission working in helping students and also people who are fresh, people who are experienced or creative professionals who wanted to make 2x3x jump. I'm also helping them. So through this podcast we have impacted more than I would say thousands and thousands of students across 30 countries and a lot of impressions are happening on Spotify and Apple podcast. Also Apple podcast listeners are growing more. So I'm really happy for the overwhelming response. And also last week one of my students got results. He got a good job in product design industry. So the myth of coming into the design degree and experience, all these things are shaken and requested through this program. Okay, thank you so much guys for this response. And if you are a new subscriber please hit the notification button so that you will get a lot of episodes like this. And today we are going to discuss very important which is called how to integrate your design thinking in your storyfication and gamifying your projects. Okay. See design thinking as you all know it's a process which is having empathy, ideation, prototype testing and iteration. Right? And in the last podcast we have even questioned this. How to even follow a rigid methodology, how to even follow a non rigid method, how to even follow a non design thinking process when it comes to a different case study. So it needs to be in that balance. And in this podcast we are going to go and understand how to integrate this storyfication into it. See, I'll tell you, if you're able to understand your users better, if you're able to understand their requirements better, you can able to integrate this gaming element in a different way. There are five aspects to integrate your gaming guys, okay? See first identify what's your real goal of your project. If you're not able to define that, please go and do it. Let's say if you already did a case study, let's say if you wanted to do a case study for both, I'm saying, okay, even if you don't have any projects, just write this framework and then you can fit any topic into it. Okay? So clearly define what's your goal of your project, what do you want to achieve, what problem you want to solve. Second, go and understand the Persona, your audience, what's their preferences, what their behavior, what's your need, aspiration, motivations. So you will have to be clearly understanding that. Then comes a very interesting element of gamification of what is the mechanism you can use. See, I'll tell you why gaming industry is thriving, okay? It's because of the kind of reward system, what they give. It's the points, like let's say levels, like let's say the badges, the leaderboards, right? So understand what's your objective of the audience and create those kind of a point system or a level system or a badge in your project. Hey Jagdish, how do I really do it? Like let's say if you're having a project which is like if you're showing any kind of a prototypes or if you're showing kind of a application design in your project, you can have a small kind of a pop up which is coming saying click here to play this. When people see that, they'll try to click it right? So you'll see, you'll start showing your application running with different, different screens and it can even pop up a sound and you can even have some live interactions. So click here to view the magical experience of this banking app. So when people are seeing this kind of what you call pop up elements and interactiveness, they'll associate more and connect with your project. This is the way you can structure your project. This is one of the main element, you can hook people to your project for a lot of time. See point system, level system, we cannot have it Here probably you can have something like a leaderboard. Probably you can have something like what you call a reward system. Like let's say if you go and understand this case study and then if you can able to answer this one question, I'll have a very. What you call I'll give you an exchange of gift. You I'll give, I'll exchange you a great gift with you. Maybe you can just send a kind of invite to them or a real gift. Maybe, maybe if you've written a blog about any particular thing, if you have written some useful information about design or something, you can exchange a free gift with them. So what happens is when they see something like this, okay, subconsciously will be triggered to go and associate with the gift guys. Why people, you know, when the marketing and sales, they keep gift, they keep goodies as an element because that keeps attraction and, and that makes people engaged to something. Okay, so you can use that same element. See, don't ask me like do I need to really give a PDF guide or anything as a gift. It can be anything, guys, even to have a chat with you, even to have. What do you call? I'm going to give you my breakthrough product design idea. What I'm going through in this current days. I'm going to have a exchange with someone who has a innovative visionary thinking. You could be that one. Read this, read this particular case study and comment me. That could be a great thing because people who are very innovative and design thinkers, you know what, they'll be kind of a statement because they want to connect with people who have a huge vision. So this could be a gaming mechanism to hook them. Okay, the fourth important element is design against. See, create that engagement, show that kind of a balance in your challenge and reward whatever you have. And you can show some visuals, you can show some what you call data. You can show some kind of a interesting element which can go on live and play like a game so that people can able to interact and understand instead of just putting only boring text, text, text, text, text. That creates a huge problem. So this is very important. The fifth important thing is iterate and test it. See, send this to your friends, send this to your mentors, send this to your teachers or whoever is helping you. Ask them for a feedback. Okay? Continuously refine this element until it is becoming really good. Okay? You'll get a clarification. So this is about integrating gamification. Understand your objective, clearly understand your audience. Choose a good game mechanisms like points, levels, badges or any kind of gift you wanted to hook on with, give them a good design experience. On showing the projects and case studies with visuals and data and something and iterate and test it. Okay, this is the gamification part. Now let's go and understand storyfication. This is the most, most interesting thing, guys. See, when you develop a story, you need to have a narrative for it. Okay? First do the crafting of your narrative. It should be really, really great, guys. Like your story should have that kind of, what do you call hook that people are really guided through your project. Like let's say a story should have a hero. A story should have a goal. The hero needs to attain a goal, right? And after he reaches the goal, there should be some afterlife. Like how the ideal victory is going to be celebrated in the hero's lifestyle. And the whole thing changes when a villain comes in. So how the villain is obstructing the hero to not achieve the goal and how the hero is beating that villain and achieving that. Okay, so this is what story elements, four things, okay? Hero, goal, afterlife and a villain. Okay? I've learned it from some of the, what you call best minds in the industry. And one of my colleague, okay, he was a designer. I would say he's one of the best designers in the country because he's good at storytelling. I mean, I've learned from this guy and I've also learned it from one of my mentor who has learned from best Hollywood story writers. Okay, so this is the four things. Guys, you don't have to think much. Just take your project, do it. I help my students do this kind of A4 elements mapping for all their case studies live. Because if, if I'm asking students to do it, they'll be very hesitant. I make them do live and then I just guide them. Hey, this is not the hero. This is really not the villain. You have to change here. The system is a villain, not an individual person. So change your project narrative accordingly. So very, very important is narrative, guys, or else you can story. Second is you have to develop some characters, some Personas which drive some more connection, some emotional aspect to it. When you say, hey, this guy has a problem of eyesight from the birth and still he's not able to see. The doctor has really what you call told, this guy will not see forever. Through our application, through our product and service, we designed the training for the people who are having the blind problem. And after which now you start seeing the world. You know what, their mom and dad are really happy. See how the emotion is Instead of that, if you say, hey, we Are designing a product which can help you see properly even if you're blind. Which one would you choose? So there is an emotional aspect to it, there is a character to it, there is a Persona to it. Second is character development. The third is create some scenes. See, break down your project into a meaningful episodes or stages. You know why people really get hooked on to Netflix series and episodes? Because it's all created in a structured segmented way so that it leads to one episode, leads to another episode, leads to another. So that they wait till the 5th season, 5th episode to watch what's the climax. Can you do that in your project? Even if it's a one page scroll in a website or something, you can create that level skies. You can, you can make a. What do you call? You can create that kind of a small interactions in your website showcasing. Hey, if you're doing, if you're using wix, you can say after you read the story narrative of this project, you can click this to understand how the prototype has been developed. If you want to know what mistakes I made in the project, you can click here. If you wanted to know what are the learnings of my project, you can click here. If you want to know what is the impact this project has created, you can click here. So what happens is this creates some more engaging thing for people who are viewing it. Okay. Fourth is definitely use huge visuals. Amazing visuals, stunning visuals, animations. I'm telling you guys, blow the people who are seeing this. Give your maximum visual skills there because that creates a huge hook there. Okay? Make it relevant. Also don't put some random things. Fifth is invoke some kind of an emotions which I've already integrated for you. So craft your narrative, create a character, create a good scene and break it down. Use visual skills to enhance and then evoke some emotion. If you're able to do this, guys, I'm telling you, if you document your design process and challenges and solutions like this and if you can able to show the impact what people are really getting after doing this and what people are getting benefited out of this. And if you're able to give some kind of a data and justification and testimony of your application or product or anything, people would be loved to see you guys. People would love to see what you've really got. I already told you. 80% of the learners says they would be more productive if they learn from a gamification source. Source by talent LMS set. Okay. And gamified learning experience results in 9% higher retention rate which was done by the same talent, LMS and motivation is really, really high. Guys, the moment if you understand this basic psychology of human how do they really engage onto some kind of a game playing for hours? How do people stick with the movies and hear the story for hours? You can structure any project in this aspect. I hope this really clarifies you because design thinking is the methodology which we are all applying. And if you are not able to integrate this into storyfication and gamification, what happens is you will be in a different direction. You won't be able to what you call hook the users or the viewers into your projects, case studies or portfolio. Thank you so much guys. I hope this is going to really help you a lot. And let me know in this podcast what did you apply? Where did you differ? I would like to see that as well.
