Jagadeesh P explains why designers gravitate toward UI work despite UX paying better. The episode breaks down the differences between the two fields, shares industry statistics, and offers career guidance for designers choosing their path.
It is very common for somebody to really fall for a UI design, which is user interface design rather than a UX design. Why? There are many reasons to it. In this podcast, I'm going to give you the advantage and disadvantage of both and why it is very important for you to be true to yourself. Okay? It's the shiny object syndrome. People are getting really stuck. And also huge vacancies are created for both of these designers in this particular time, whatever we are speaking. Okay? So take a lot of notes with the statistics and analysis. I'm going to give you some steps also in order to find out the real true industry intention behind you choosing UI over UX or UX over ui. Okay, so take a lot of notes. Let's jump in. Welcome to this Design for Change. Thank you for staying tuning in with me guys. And through this podcast we are impacting thousands of designers across 32 countries. And I'm on a mission to help 1 million designers reach their creative lifestyle. Whether they have a degree, whether they have experience or not, I'm going to help them. Okay? And through this initiative we are also creating a lot of students with getting job, getting freelancing, getting even startup ideas going in. Okay? So if you want to really take the advantage of it, there is a free gift available for you in the description. You can go and climb it up. Okay? Because every single day, 30 minutes, according to Indian Standard Time, 6am, I'm having a session with the designers. So today also we saw a tool called Engage AI in LinkedIn in order to find more designers, connect and network with them. Okay? So every day there'll be a new topic teaching and you can clarify your doubts as well. You can claim that gift. Today we are having an interesting topic, guys. You know What? According to 2021, a design census by AIGA and Google found 17,000 designers are there in UI UX, which is emerging as a most common type of specialized design. Okay. It's in 2021 with 25% of the respondent identifying to UI design and 20 percentage to UX design. See, 4 percentage is higher. So in this whole data, 24 percentage is UI designers. So while UI UX roles are often sometimes overlapping, it's not a one single role. This survey, what it really shows us, it it shows a slighter prevalence of UI over these UX designers. You know, Bureau of Labor statistics reported in 2020 there were approximately 2,81,500 graphic designers in US. I've got this data alone. Okay. However, it's, it's definitely important to Note that graphic designers may also work for ui UX projects or product design projects directly. So the lines are blurred. It's not like you will do only UI in your career. It doesn't work that way. Okay, so product design is multifaceted. Particularly if you're a product designer, you really work for graphic design, UI design, UX design and industrial design as well. So it is very very difficult to quantify how much people are specifically in that since it's an overlapping trend. Okay, you need to get the clarity. So according to national center of Education statistics shows the number of bachelor's degrees awarded in visual and performing arts, which includes design related field has been steadily increasing over the years. So people are also learning from a professional institute. But let me tell you guys, this is a top skill whether you take UI or ux. That's okay, no problem. So this is actually a top highly paid job in the top in the globe level as well as in India level. In India it came top second, top two highly paid job in the whole industries. Yeah. It is evident that whether you choose anything, you are going to have that slight inclination towards reaching your goal. But that's not the point here. Why are students really getting fall for this UI design? Okay, see it's very vital guys. You have seen the statistics, it's all there. So even even compared to a bigger population of designers in the whole community, you will see lot of people will start as a graphic designers and then they'll go into UI design. Let me tell you, this is called shiny object syndrome. First is people who are really driven for this UI design not always take the real intention of their passion, truly matching with the needs. Most people in my experience I'm seeing guys, okay, 80% of the people they first get allured to this kind of shiny visuals, graphics this, Photoshop, illustrations this, Canva designs, this Figma, Adobe xd. So they are really drawn into that. Okay, see guys, we are in the world of distraction, we are in the world of very very less attention span. Can I tell you, 9 second is the average human attention span. Now you could have understood why Instagram is giving you shots, it's giving you reels, why YouTube has come up with shots because they know we can't hold attention for people more than this time. University of Chicago has found this. Nine second is the average attention time whenever a person using smartphone, particularly a teen adult. 121 times this guy is getting distracted in a day because of this distraction in the mobile notification average and it takes 15 to 17 minutes. To come back. Sorry. 9 to 15 minutes to come back to his or her normal work. See guys, we are in a distracted world. So UI design is a one good way to make you distracted faster. Okay? That's the first important reason why we are allude to this ui. Second is there is something called visceral design. There is something called behavioral design. There is something called reflective design. This complex topics and all you're talking. Let me tell you guys, if you're getting attracted to a car or building or a color or anything, that's called visual design. People really like visual things, right? Behavior is like let's say how it is really, really functioning, how it is working, how it is behaving in certain way. That's called a behavioral design. Okay? Reflective is after you use this product, what kind of an experience you felt, what kind of a remembrance you have, what kind of a reflection you have after a year or when you see that product again. These three senses are important for a product to become successful with the people. I'll tell you guys, this is coming from the nature. Have you seen the seeds? The seed will not just like that grow. It will have an outer shell and a pulp which is evolved over the time because the seed cannot germinate and reproduce asexually. If the seed is very raw and natural, it needs to be covered in a fruit so that the fruit falls down. The seed is safe, People consume the fruit, they spit the seed, the seed grows there and it automatically germinate. So nature itself know visceral design is important for somebody to get attracted. Behavioral design is something which is functional. Reflective is something which can really happen in the future, reflect and grow. So you need to understand guys, you, UI is a way maybe you would have come into this field. Graphic design is a way you could have come into this field. But everything is important as a whole we get attracted to this visceral senses. Yeah, that's totally fine. It's a natural phenomena. I told you, it's not a big deal. Okay, you need to get this clarity. Third is I'll tell you why people are getting attracted. See, it's very easy to create figma screens because it's a tangible output, right? But it's very difficult to show a UX output, which is sometimes research oriented, which is huge data collection, which is a primary and secondary information. Sometimes you can't make a sense out of a huge data whatever you're you're using. So people are feeling more comfortable to show the tangible output. Hey, see, I've made a Screen. Hey see I made a website. Hey see I made a mobile ui. It's very flashy, very trendy, very simple. And also you can learn whole figma in just two hours. It's a very simple tool. Adobe XT can be learned even faster. I mean that's, that's the way in which people are getting attacked. Okay, the fourth important thing is the pay scale. See, even though UI designers are relatively paid less compared to a product designers, UX designers are also relatively paid compared to a product designers because of the value add what they create in the whole ecosystem. It's all based on that. Even if you're a graphic designer, sometimes your pay will be accordingly different. So the way in which you solve a problem will make your salaries higher. You need to get this rational behind it. I'm adding this as a point because when you choose a product design or UI design or UX design, you need to consider this as well how much value you are going to make. Then you will be not allude to this any kind of a syndrome. You'll be seeing the rationale behind it. Okay, but the fifth point, what I wanted to make it is. But truly guys, why you wanted to become a designer, Are you really interested in creating interfaces? Are you interested in creating some kind of a user interfaces? See, UI is not just making some buttons and screens and all. It's an interface between a human and a computer. It's not creating buttons, it's creating the school interfaces. It's not just creating some kind of a tactile experience. It's like the sound, visceral touch, feel everything. You are engaging your senses of the person with the computer, with the ui, with the, with the screen, with the mobile, with the laptop, whatever you're creating ui, it's an interface. If you're not understanding psychology, if you're not understanding this behavior behavioral aspect, you won't be able to create UI guys. So don't fall for this shiny objects. Think deeply. This is not about sketching, this is not about creating some visuals. It's finding out are you really clear and have this kind of a stability in your thought process why you want to become a designer. If you are having that clarity, then you are still interested in ui. Then go for it. Okay? Be little careful about it. The sixth way how you can find out how you can really be sure whether you have chosen a right career or whether why you're doing this is to have a clarity in your mission, to have a clarity in your one year goal. Don't copy from Somebody else, make sure it aligns with your biggest interest. If you have that, go for it. Else leave it. It's totally fine. Don't force fit yourself. Okay. There are world's best graphic designers, Paula Sheeler, I like her design. She's one of the great graphic designer, I would say. Okay. And there are a lot of celebrities and you can see a work of Leonardo da Vinci. It's mostly aesthetics, functional, both. It's like I would say experience, interface, everything has been connected. Here you can see the work of Tim Cook. He's the brains behind this MacBook Air creation and he is the brains behind many of the iPhones design and creation. So there are both aesthetics and functionality aligned into it. And there are good designers like let's say there was a guy in Netflix series. You can watch how the Instagram is created, how the Instagram logo, how the entire Instagram has redefined in 2015-16. You can watch the documentary Netflix. So these people are UI designers, graphic designers as well as the product designers who has added a whole value system around it. There are a lot of successful people, guys, if you watch the successful stories also you will have a much more clarity on where you wanted to stand. Don't copy guys, again, I'm telling you. And don't stop yourself. Also, hey, I'll find the top true reason, then I'll start my career. Don't just start. You will explore on your own. You will get a clarity on your own once you start your career. A lot of people think and stop at this career. I've seen thousands of people Jagdish. I'm not sure how to choose my career, UI or ux. That's why I'm waiting. That's why I'm not taking any course. That's why I'm not taking any initiative. That's why I'm not applying. Job complete waste of time for you as well as your family. They're thinking you're learning and growing. No, you're just stopping. And then in fact you're going reverse. You're getting into too much analysis. Paralysis mode. Start with something. If you're interested in ux, start with something. If you're interested interested in ui, start with something. If you're interested in graphic design, start with something. And then if you're going forward, you will have some clarity. You will have a niche clear as and when you go along. My mentor always says you find your real mission in your life as you go along. It's not like you stop and then you find it and then you go in. It doesn't work that way. You'll be waiting for your life time. Okay I hope this podcast would have given you clarity why people are getting allude and how you can be congruent and staying strong while taking this decision. Thank you so much guys.
