Jagadeesh P explains how designers can use storytelling in job applications to create emotional connections and stand out. Personal stories help candidates align with company needs and differentiate themselves from others applying for the same role.
Welcome to another new set of videos. In this particular segment, we are going to understand how to make a very strategic job application. And this is going to be a seven part video where one leads to another and it will all make sense at the last video.
Okay?
So make sure you don't miss anything. This particular video, I'm going to explain you why stories are very important in order to create impactful job application. Okay, let's jump in. You take a typical job application, there are multiple involved, okay? But this is a very different strategy.
Okay?
This is a strategic way of approaching a job, particularly designers nowadays. What I understand is a lot of skills, experience, they have degrees, everything is available. The process is not clear. If the strategy is not clear, you will end up making a lot of mistakes and the iteration goes up. I've seen people attending 200 interviews and also getting failed with students who have attended 2030 interviews in a month and getting failed. So after working with all the students, I came to know the very optimal way to understand and cross this particular job application. Pay close attention. There are four aspects to it. One, one is finding the strong reason. Second is the conventional job application. We know in LinkedIn Naukri, we apply for the process and then we know very clearly that HRS will contact you or you go and contact somebody. So this is very evident, right? You contact the HR as well. So the same process is typical. Even if you go for referral, you go to some contact FB, LinkedIn, friend circle. So you will go with any process, right? You'll go with a typical interview, process, design, task. So let me make this very clear for you. Attending interviews is good. A very typical, like let's say a knockery or maybe glass doors or maybe any other job application portal. You go first is you will build a portfolio. You'll make a job. Market analysis, interview preparation, networking strategies, resume, skill set, job hunting, all these things is typical. Let me make it very critical. Let me make it very unique for you how you can cross this boundary very easily. You have to first find the reason. In fact, this has to be second typical. The conventional job, let it go up. Find the reason why you wanted to actually have a job. For some people, the need could be financial. Nothing wrong in that. We all start from there. You require this for economically running your engine of your life. Second, financial freedom. Sometimes it is, it is beyond that responsibility. Also you need to have surplus quantity of money. They give a charity, they give a social cost. So it depends on their interest why they wanted to create that.
Okay?
So it's beyond money, financial freedom. Third is people want to be just a consultant. They have technical skills, they can consult with people and then they can get paid for. Or you could be a freelancer, like a hobby. Like you do it for just hover rates. Or maybe a project based and then you get paid for it.
Okay.
It's like a task based. Maybe for a small task, you'll be paid accordingly. So whatever it is, you fall in this category. The fifth is there are people who wanted to make a big impact in the design. They wanted to make a change. In fact, this program is also called Design for Change.
Right?
So the impact could be a very different category. You have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Okay.
If you take action, only what you're going to learn in this video will make a sense. Listening to this will not change anything. Okay, so type out in the chat, what do you think? Which is your category? Don't write two categories. Write only one category once. If this is clear, then we'll go for the next important step. We'll come to this in the coming days. We're not going to touch this dolphin. Dolphin means like how dolphin penetrates and cuts through the water, right? I've learned it from my mentor. Like he talked a different concept about dolphin. But I took the strategy of dolphin. How it can make a very strategic job application process and penetrate through all the fishes and other blue whales and all this what you call organisms in the sea ocean. And how your dolphin can go exactly into that penetrating. We will see it later. First, in order to go to that, we'll have to understand something called stories. I wanted you to do this activity. After watching this video, I'll going to give an activity. Because if you do that activity, only the part two video will make a sense for you. It will start making a difference in you. You can find lot of stories from your childhood, from your adulthood, from your school days, from your college days. Let's say sometimes you have experience, sometimes you have a family. So whatever is done, I'll tell you what are the conditions for that. Stories could be interesting, it could be sad. Stories could be emotional, it could be funny, it doesn't matter. The type could be anything. That's up to you. You have to write it in pen and paper. Don't use digital method. I want to make this as a point as well. And it should be explained in two to three minutes. We are not technical writers. Don't write blogs. Big one, okay? Make it very simple, explainable, short people have to get the point. What you're trying to say, okay. Hey, Jagdish, how does it really help for job? Let's come to it. Yet you have to wait till the last video to really make a sense. At least in third and fourth videos you will start making a big clarity and understanding. I would say it should be explainable in a shorter way.
Okay.
Should be real. Don't bring some fantasies here. This is authentic. This is you, by the way. And time should be there which year it happened and also which time it happened. You have exactly the date and exactly the year so that it becomes so real. So this is the condition for it. Okay, Jaguar. So how do I create this kind of stories? Let's come to the very interesting part. First is why storytelling is important in job replication. It is very evident. It creates an emotional connect between the people. Because facts tell, stories sell. You need to sell yourself to the recruit. You need to sell yourself to your parents, you need to sell yourself to your colleagues. Then and only your idea could be convincing and your idea could be taken forward. So facts tell, stories sell stories make an information about memorable and relatable experience. So when candidates share their experience, what happens? They're more likely to get emotional, connect with the recruiter, which just makes a standout application for them.
Okay.
See guys how the connection is making. We have not come to the strategic need of the companies yet. In the coming videos we are going to make a mix match in the matchmaking as well. Let's just write stories which can be in a very emotional way, can be in a sad, interesting, excitement, enthusiastic, whatever is your category. But it creates an emotional affection. Second is it should be aligning with any company's needs. It will align with the company's needs. Because before you construct a story, you need to be very clear on why you're doing this. By blending the personal stories, the company's needs, candidates can show a very researched part of it and understand the goals of their company very easily. Research about you first and take a story.
Okay.
This makes an application more relevant and applicable. Many applicants may have a similar qualification. But a well told story can differentiate yourself. The major factor is differentiate. You tend to create a huge difference and then make a standout. Let me make a statement clear that comes little later. And then you showcase your skills, your skill also towards why this particular character or the personality is going to come into this industry. What are the kind of stories and with that stories, what kind of skills you are saying you have developed. Maybe something bad would have happened in your childhood, maybe because of that Reason you are driven to really create a lot of things. Maybe because of that creativity you got to learn lot of things in the online with the people, with the mentor coaching. And then you develop that skill of problem solving so that nobody can get affected because of the problem which you faced. And then you eventually made it as a passion and you made it as a profession and then eventually you made as a entire livelihood for you. And because of that you are here. So this connects people. This is the four important things guys. Creating emotional connection, aligning with the company, standing out from the competition, showcasing that skill. Let me make it even more convincing for you. Storytelling enhances your memory retention. Research shows that people who are doing storytelling are 22 times more likely to remember a fact than it has been wrapped up in a story. Very, very interesting. Stanford University have proven this. It's not some story, it's a fact what they're explaining. And it creates a huge impact in the interview process in the impact of hiring. So according to LinkedIn global talent trends found that 92% of the hiring professionals say that soft skills such as communication skills and empathy storytelling are more important than the hard skills. I used to tell my students every single time mindset is 80% skill set is 20 percentage. But that too 80% is soft skills in that hard skills is only 20 percentage. So it's very important to understand that. And even a survivor Job byte found 85%, 87% of the recruiters consider candidates to identical telling ability to evaluate their communication skills in design. If you're not able to communicate what you're doing, what you're creating concept what you're really making as a final solution, people will not understand. Leave your client, leave your customer. Your colleagues will not first understand them. So you need to have a compelling story narrative to make sure that is very relatable for the people. And you should be having the art of communicating. You can communicate through words, you can communicate through sketches, you can communicate to 3D model. Totally up to you. A study by Neuro Image found that students stories engage more of a brain. Very interesting guys. This includes the area responsible for sensory experience emotional response making the content more impactful and memorable. Let's say you have a project in financial application. Your story could be something like this. I come from a middle class background where month on month is a survival. Today more than 55 Percentage of Indian population is like me. I wanted to design a solution for them which shows that how wealth can be managed. And that's my case study. Also what I developed Called it made lot of difference, right? Instead of saying I made a money management application, now how is the story making sense? You have taken from yourself, which makes a lot of others when you wrap it out around a story. Statistics have taken for an example, but this is how it could be. Next is you increase the likelihood of job offers. Candidates who have a compelling story narrative are 50 percentage more likely to receive a job offer. Harvard Business Review who else is needed for you? Harvard Business Reviews one of the standard journals and articles and their research is taken from many products and research and design and findings and everything.
Right?
So this is the five important things impact on the hiring. Storytelling improves your maneuver, retention. Recruitment preference goes high. Your emotional connect goes high. Your job application process goes high. I hope this made a clear sense for you. Now let me give you an example. See, you can share some success stories. Totally up to you. Sharing a success story about a specific project can make a big difference. Maybe you can make a small story in your earlier job what you did. You can say hey, there was no client which was there in the project. I delivered it single handed. And then I did that project in two weeks, which was supposed to be four weeks. So I saved two weeks of the company's time and efforts and resource so that I made big difference. Also I got appreciation from client. Could be a success story, it could be a value alignment. This is more interesting guys. Telling a story which you're passionate about the company's mission and how your personal values is also aligned to it. Sometimes the need of the company is different, but your interest could be in a different way. So how you are aligning to that. This alignment sometimes brings more clarity in the recruitment process. People will say okay, so this guy is also more interested in creativity and ideation. We have business problem, we have clients, we have customers, but we need creative ideas. We are doing monotonous products. We need creativity for that kind of an application. This is going to be helpful. Second is experience narrative. Like when you take a compelling story narrative which is showing your professional journey, highlighting the key milestones in learning experience. This is most, most interesting guys. This can provide great difference in your career path and aspiration what you're going to do. So a lot of people don't know how to do it. In the coming videos you will know how to. It is important in order to make this experience as a blending story for you and make a blending story into a skill set and make that skill set show to the company and get you hired for that. Okay, so it is very important to understand these three factors, Success stories, value alignment and experience narratives so that it makes a big difference. Okay, so a lot of people will not have a clarity in this. In the coming videos you'll see how it is all making a big difference. Okay, so this is the condition, this is the strategic application and this is the three different ways you can understand why it is very important and the statistics around it and the examples for it. Okay, so let's come to the real now. Take a notepad and pen and write five stories about it. The condition is very clear. I already told you. And you need to think about your childhood, your adult, your job, your experience and then start writing a story. Pin that stories in this video and just give me a link to that particular Google Drive where you can personally have it for reference and you can share the password with me if I'm prompted. Okay, maybe some of your stories could be very emotional. Maybe some of your stories could be open to public. That's okay. But if it's very private, no problem, you can just tell it's a private story. Very private, no problem. You can just tell it's a private story. But I've written that type out in the chat, in the video, I've written the story. I've written five stories. But that makes a big difference and lets others also get inspired from you. Because if you are not doing the story, next video is not going to make a big difference. Okay, see you. See you in the next part of the video.
