Ep 272| How to break the design thinking process inside you ?
1 Oct 2024 · 7 min
Jagadeesh P argues you need to unlearn traditional design thinking. He pushes for flexibility over rigid frameworks, challenges time constraints that limit problem-solving, and walks through rapid exercises to sharpen how you actually think.
Today we are going to discuss a very important topic in this podcast, which is design thinking process. In fact, we have recorded a lot more podcast before and a lot of people know about design thinking process. They know about what a designer does when it comes to solving a problem. But in this podcast you are going to learn, you are going to in fact unlearn something very, very. How do you become a very good design thinker going along your career? Please make a very careful note of this, guys. Okay? The very first information which I will tell you as a design thinker is you should be first flexible in order to solve any kind of a problem. That's the very first mindset which you need to exhibit, okay? Which is called flexibility. What are you saying? Why are you saying it's very important? Flexibility. What is this flexibility and all this? Let me go over and then I'll tell you that. Okay, Very first thing is flexibility. Second, you should know how to go and solve the problem using process and how to go and solve a problem without a process. Okay? Like let's say deliberately, if somebody is giving you a process from problem statement to get solved in a week, you should be able to solve it in one hour. Also, can you think about it? Yeah, the client would have given you one week, but now can you think about how you can able to solve it in one hour. Please do this activity, guys. This is very important. There is a reason why I'm telling you this, okay? Because out there lot of materials is available in the online to teach you what is mean by design thinking process. You do empathy, you do refine, you do ideate, you do prototype, you do testing, right? This podcast is not to iterate on that. This podcast is to break down your thought process inside your cognitive ability. How you can really prepare yourself to solve some of the big problems what other designers out there are not even looking at. Okay? So that's the reason I'm asking you to do this process. Like let's say your client has given you a project for one week. Or maybe if your client has given you a project for one month, try to solve it in one hour. Hey Jagdish, how it's possible? Yes, it is possible. You have 60 minutes time. If you break down a 10, 10 minutes, six steps for each of this and you can still do it. Switch on your timer, try to solve it. If you want, you can pass this podcast in next one hour, you can able to do it. Okay, just do it wrong. I'm not going with any instruction. The moment when you do it after the 60 minutes, I hope people who are very good action takers would have definitely done it. People who are too much thinkers and analyzers, probably they would have tried for a few minutes and then they would have come back. But yeah, if you are listening to this, I really believe that you would have done something else. Okay. Okay. So ideally, what has happened in this one hour? First of all, you would have thought in a way in your mind, subconsciously, one hour is the actual time frame what you have. Based on that, your mind will plan in a reverse way. If I'm not solving this problem, what is going to happen to my user? You're going to lose a client, you're going to lose that particular client forever. So you're not going to get revenues. Okay, so some way, some pressure is already built, some constraint is already there, right? So based on that, what your mind will do is it will start thinking about a process. What has really gone wrong. Can I do some online search? Can I do some phone call with clients or somebody to get some data or information? Can I go to websites, Can I go to find out some case studies in YouTube or online to find out what is the real problem? Second, how we can able to solve it in a more quicker way, because optimally one hour is a time given. Third, you would have found out what solution already worked better and okay, what solution people have already solved it better. Or probably you would have also found out that this is the most optimal, which you find is more relevant. Some of the similar problems, what you already solved in your case studies is now reflected. So you are now getting more clearer and then you will finally able to present the solution in one hour. See, I just told you. You could have done this way or you could have done it in a little different way. Also there is no one way to do it and everybody is different in executing their own project and design process. So what I'm trying to say is when you solve a problem with the one hour in the mind, you have a very different approach. When you solve it the same thing. Like let's say a client is giving you six months to solve it. Can you solve it in one week? Don't present to the client prematurely. I'm not asking you to do that. Try to do it in one week. Because design can only be learned and the pattern can only be broken. And the unlearning can only happen when you let yourself do lot of mistakes. That is why I'm just giving you the ulta way of not just teaching, teaching, teaching in the podcast. I'm just giving you an activity and reflecting on it. I don't know people who are listening to this podcast on the same day or maybe after a year, or after even maybe five years. This is a classical principle which remains same forever. Even after 100 years, you still can do it, apply it and solve it. Maybe the problems could be very different, maybe the technology could be very different, but the fundamentals are same. Okay, so the way in which we have been rewired is in a week wise, in a month wise, in a year wise, we've been given project and we are executing, right? But when you break this pattern, when you try to solve it in five minutes, when you try to solve it in one hour. Imagine if a client is giving six month project and you're trying to solve it in one week. It's just seven days. How will you be able to do the process? How will you do the research? How will you do the ideation? How will you do the prototype, how will you do the testing? And after the seven days reflect with your team how this could have been done better and then make a time plan, and then make a project plan and then create a process and then do a design thinking methodology. The moment when you do it, you will see the magic unfolded and you will see how it is going to be getting even more intensive. And now the new patterns will start emerging in your mind. So you can able to force your mind to get the process and you can able to loosen your mind to get the process in both ways. If you do it, you will be able to evolve as a better person. This is the one and only way to learn design thinking process, guys. The rest of the process is already available in the online. You can go and learn it. You don't have to even listen to this podcast. There's nothing special out there which is there. But this one is very special because everybody is very different. Everybody is coming with a very different culture, everybody is coming with a very different background. And everybody solves a problem in a different way. Particularly that one week is given. And when you reflect along with your team after a week about this problem statement, what you thought you would have emerged a process which is even more better than IDEO or any studios out there in the world. This is the way you can able to question the norms. This is the way you can able to break the patterns. And then comment in the podcast, what is your learning idea? Comment in the podcast in one hour activity. What is your top three unlearnings? Don't Write learnings, write unlearnings and comment. What are you going to take it forward from here? I made this podcast in six and a half minutes. Okay, but the information what I gave you is powerful. More than six years. Also you can able to try and implement and get an output because in our program we used to do it live with our students. Forcing five minutes, forcing 10 minutes in 15 minutes. How people can able to solve the problem. So when your mind works in that way, you become so sharpened to solve any problems out there in the world. Not just designing one more website, not just designing one more car. You get to see something out there very different. Okay, I wish you all the best.
