This is a podcast titled "Ep 305| How to become Metrics master being a creative Designers" recorded in November 2024. The content features a single speaker named Jagdish who provides an in-depth discussion on the importance of data literacy for designers. He explains key concepts such as qualitative and quantitative data, design metrics, alignment with business goals, tools like Google Analytics and Mixpanel, and how to translate metrics into actionable insights. The podcast aims to help designers improve their project delivery, portfolio, and career by mastering metrics and data-driven design decisions.
Being a designer, what I can able to see over the time is people are just building screens and people are just designing products. You need to understand there is a power of data. I'm not asking you to become a data scientist, that's up to you, it's your interest. But being a designer, you should know how to read the data more than any normal people. Okay, in this podcast I'm going to help you build how to really read the numbers and how to start making a sense out of it, how to even become a metrics master in design. Because this is going to ultimately impact in your project delivery, in your portfolio, in your recruitment, in your introduction, in your overall career of your design. Okay, so take a lot of notes. I'm going to give you the live activities as well. So hop on in your laptops if possible to listen to this podcast or if you're traveling, just take a short notepad in your phone and just do the activities live. Because if you're not doing the activities, you won't be able to get it. Okay, foreign guys, welcome to this podcast. Thank you for staying tuning here. A very happy news is that we have been a celebrity wrap up in Spotify and it will be released in the December 1st. And I'm super happy for the support guys and totally 46 country people are listening to this podcast and thank you so much for this overwhelming support and I'm very excited to report this. But record this podcast guys because this is a little offbeat topic. Not a lot of designers really like this. Designers really like to play with colors, graphics, they want to do some research this that. But data is little boring for many people. Okay, like let's say if you know how to read the numbers, if you know how to get something improved or measured, you should know how to read the values and numbers. See what's your age, what's your weight, what's your fat level, what's your date of birth, what's your salary, what's your income? Everything is made up of numbers, guys. See, nothing gets improved or decreased only when it is measured. If it wants to get improved or measured, you need to only measure it because then and only you'll know the fitness, what you're doing should impact in your weight. The food, what you're eating should impact in your weight. If something is not happening, then what you're doing is completely wrong. So you have to change the methods, change the strategies, change the coaching or change the entire strategy of what you're doing. So think about it. Numbers gives you the Metrics numbers gives you the game and how we can start playing around it. It is very vital for any designer to get this skill guys. Okay? So that is why this particular podcast I'm recording this. And first of let me tell you this is very important factor. Companies tracking design performance metrics are two times more likely to succeed. McKinsey Design Index 2021 says that designers presenting the data back decisions are 40% more likely to gain stakeholder approval. Adobe State of Creative Create report says that metrics based design is essential for measuring the UI UX return on investment and the total business performance is analyzed. So you need to get this clarity guys. Okay Jagdish, how to be a metrics master. See there is a very detailed YouTube live which I've created. You can go to my YouTube channel and please do watch it. But this podcast is going to give you a nutshell, okay? If you really want to get a complete coaching like let's say if you want to learn how to build your projects, how to create this metrics, how to build your portfolio and how to even connect the dots for the interview I would highly recommend you to come and jump on my live webinar on Sunday 10 o' clock with the link is available here below and you can take the training to know about it. Because a lot of people who are from the ground zero, I started taking this training and they made a lot of sense out of it. And this is going to be the ultimate for many designers out there looking for a proper guidance clarity under mentorship. Okay, I would highly, highly recommend that. Okay, so now there are four aspects and concepts shall tell you. First aspect, understand the key design method. See you need to understand what are the qualitative data or the quantitative. Qualitative data means lot of insights information. Quantitative means numbers like let's say how many people you interviewed, how many people are suffering from disease, how many people in this disease got cured, how many people not cured. So when it deals with the numbers it is quantitative quantity. Okay? Qualitative means asking open ended questions and getting a lot of insight. Like let's say why do you think people are losing. People can answer 10 things right? So this is called a quality way of approach. So first of all understand what kind of a data it is there in front of you being a designer. Second, you can have something like user retention rate, task success rate and net promoter score. User engagement conversion ratios, click through rates. See these are all predominant UI UX terminology and a lot of landing pages. Website builders and creators predominantly use it because if any website is launching their product or service or e commerce, they will have to know how the user behavior is. They will have to track it so that in which season, in which day, in which time users are engaging so that they can able to put their products and services to make it more profits and revenues. Ultimately the business has to convert. I always talk about conversion. If nothing is getting converted, whatever you're doing as a designer or a developer or anything in your company, everything goes in vain. Ultimately the conversion has to happen. People have to subscribe your product, people have to buy your product. People has to really pay for your services. For the product and services, what your company is building or what your client is building. If that is not happening, you are just joking around. You're just joking around and you're not resolving some real problem. Or probably you have not understood what is the real problem. Or maybe you are not reading the numbers carefully. Okay, I would highly recommend you to go to my YouTube channel guys, because there you can watch the live session. In fact, inside our community for Design for change. I took a two and a half hours detailed session of this because it takes time. It's not a joke like you cannot learn just like that in just one or two minutes. It takes a conscious awareness practice and you need to do mistakes to learn this particular skill. Okay, there is a method called smart. Like let's say a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound smart. Okay, there is a metrics to track the design project. I would highly recommend to go and watch the Dropbox case study this. They have clearly tracked how the user engagement has improved and how the Dropbox has iteratively put this into their design thinking process and improved the user experience to a whole new different level. In fact, It's a great YouTube video. I'll share the link below. Okay, you can watch it. Okay, so now let's talk about the second aspect. First I told you how to understand the key design metrics. Second, make sure it is aligning with your business goal. Second is alignment. Okay, See there are many mechanics and techniques to do it. You can use user behavior metrics like let's say what are the user really behaving with respect to this landing page and website? What are the objective and the key results? What users is going to get? My objective for the user is to come and my objective for the user is to go and buy this product in Amazon. So whatever is your objective and key results, please make sure it is metricated to the outcomes. Okay? That is how you can able to track the behavior. See, as a. As a student or a fresher, you're listening to this podcast. I would hype. I would recommend you to take any one project which you already have and try to draw a creative visualization data for it. If you're not able to find the data, go to Google, ChatGPT or any AI tools to find out some statistics like let's say just simply type give me some statistics for the project. What I have below, you can copy paste the entire content of your project in that text box and automatically chatgpt or googlebot or anything what you're using is going to give you some relevant statistics. Try to understand how can you make an insight out of it. Okay Jagdish, I don't know how to read the insight which lead me to the third point. There are tools and technologies and techniques to track your metrics. The very first tool is Google Analytics. I would highly recommend you to go and see the Google Analytics screenshot pictures which is there in the online Google images. You can go and first watch them. You will see how the users are behaving in a different country, different different geography, different date, different peak, different month. And what are the age group and what is the ethnographic style and what are the professional people like? Let's say are they working people, are they school people, are they college, are they dropout? Are they, are they like in urban cities? So all of this targeting and positioning what marketing team talks about comes from this Google Analytics. And you can use a tool called hardjar. It used to analyze your heat maps and interaction and show you where users are clicking more in your buttons, in your. In your website, in your application. So this will predominantly give you tools and techniques and methods to understand how your users are behaving. See there are many tools like mixpanel. It helps you to monitor the metrics and user engagement UXCamp particularly if you want to analyze behavior, you can use this amplitude. Advanced segmentation and behavior analysis is particularly tracked in this AI integration. See, you can use ChatGPT to integrate this insights and convert it as a feedback. You can get it as your design input process. You can start designing lot more products using this simple technique. There is a tool called Zapier and public guys I would highly recommend if you are, if you are an experienced guy, you can try this. If you're a fresher, leave this part. Okay. These are like automation softwares. Using this entire input what you got from their landing page and all you can convert it into an Excel Sheet and start reading the Excel. That means how much users have clicked it, how much users are converted, how much users came into the shopping cart but they have not bought. Why the engagement may be bad. Maybe you will have to work on the engagement factor and go ahead. So this is the third part which is tools and technology. The fourth, translating metrics into an actionable insight. This is where being a creative designer I need to understand. See companies with accessible metrics report 20% higher retention rate. Forrester research said that products with metric based design see 30% increase in conversion. So neurologically what happens guys, when you are able to give a point or information which is more relevant for the user, they will be able to take a proper decision out of it. Because to know that information, you should know what information you need to give. See data driven decision making. Active prefrontal cut. It enhances the rational thinking. See always amygdala is the enemy. Prefrontal cortex is what you need to make your user get activated. Then the decision making for the user is very easy. Then automatically they'll come and buy your product. Automatically they'll subscribe to your products and automatically your business grows. When your business grows, you also grow. As a designer you need to understand this guys, okay? And also make sure your tracking progress should be boosting their dopamine effect. Because everything works in reward and pundit. See all this insights, Tracking everything is good. But if you're not trying to convert as a solution to engage the user, ultimately you're not going to create a big impact out of it. See, there are many visualization tools like let's say Tableau, Power, bi. You can use simple graphical methods in PPD and other tools. But ultimately first you should know how to read the data. You should try to create insights out of it. And then you have to know how to convert the raw data into strategic decision by looking at the data. Like let's say 50 percentage people have come down. You should ask a question, being a designer, why 50% people have come down? What happened to these people? Okay, then there's some problem. Can we do a primary research again? Can we do a secondary research again and find the reason? Oh, the interaction was not clear. Let me go and design that. So based on the use cases, what you have, you will be able to find out and go ahead. Okay, so this is the fourth aspect. Let me repeat you quickly. First, understanding the key metrics of design. Second is aligning with your business. Good. Third, the tools and techniques like Google Analytics, Hardjar, Mixpanel, Uxcam Amplitude, AI integration, etc. And the fourth is translating the metrics into actionable insight. If you are able to do it guys, I'm sure you'll be able to create a far more impact. More than anybody. Okay, I hope this podcast is really super for you and I've listened and learned it. But now let's come to real. Take one screenshot from the Google or your earlier project and start creating a visualization for your project and start trying to take the insights from it. How can you read the data and create the insight? How can you read the data and the graphs and information and take the insights? Because if you're able to continuously read it and get inside, read it and get inside, automatically your consciousness will grow. If you're not able to completely do it, just take a screenshot in the Google Analytics and Google image, put in ChatGPT and ask for insight. It will give you some start. Based on that you can also know. Okay, this is how the insights should be taken so that you are not feeling numb. At least chatgpt a little bit help you to get started and continuously practice it until it becomes a habit and a second nature. Okay, thank you so much guys. I hope this podcast would have been a great value for you. If you feel this is very useful, please give me a best al in Apple and Spotify. And please do spread a word to your friends as well. And please do join my upcoming webinar at 10am Sunday. Let's see you there live. Take care. All the best. Bye bye.
