Jagadeesh P walks through six strategies for discovering your unique design style: self-exploration, embracing challenges, learning from others, and expressing yourself through blogging or podcasting. The talk is built for designers ready to figure out what they actually want to make.
How do you really create your own design expression when it comes to showing that uniqueness in your flavor of your design or your concept or your ideas, whatever you're making, creative people have the problem of showcasing that. I'm going to be giving you six strategies how you can really bring that out. Again, this requires some dedicated efforts because I cannot tell you that after listening to this podcast you explore that. No, it is a series of exploration and this is my experience, how I explored myself and I really unlocked my potential and how you can start with this understanding and start unlocking your real design style for your creativity. Okay, so definitely you have to take a lot of notes and you need to make sure the actionable points, whatever you're coming out of this podcast should be immediately implemented in next one or two days. And if you have your notepads, I would suggest there are some moments where you have to pause this podcast and write it down where you'll see much more clarity after you listen to the remaining part of the podcast. Okay, so take a lot of notes. Let's dive into this podcast. What does it really take to become a very good designer to showcase the real, what you call the style of yourself, right? If you are a copycat, if you are taking some Google inspiration, Pinterest inspiration and behance and copying some images here and there, that's totally fine, guys. Copying is really good when it comes to a designer. But when you have to really develop a style for you, this requires beyond copying, it requires beyond getting inspired, it requires beyond going yourself to really find out that the six strategies which I am telling you right now will definitely have a good impact on you. Take your diary or notes where you can write some sentences because it's a self discovery and an exploration. You need to definitely get this. Then and only you will be able to find out your real potential which is hidden inside you. The very first thing is know thyself. You should definitely know yourself first. Discuss among your first. I would say write about yourself first about hundred words or five hundred words. You can write thousand words, that's totally fine, but normally I ask my students to write 5,000 different words, right? So if you're able to do this, what happens is you will find some significant achievements and failures and different introspections will come to you. Then you can discuss with your close friends and relatives, your mom, dad, your brother or whom is your best friend. You can discuss with them. What happens is you will come to know better. I'm encouraging you to write your personal values also Guys, your interest, your experiences and definitely you need to give some examples of that reality. Because if you are passing this podcast now and you're taking few minutes, like at least four to five minutes to write down about you as a person, why did you choose design? What makes you really come out of your existing field and to choose this career decision or what really inspired you to join this career from the start of the year? Maybe if you have completed 12 standard and you started design as your career, what is the real need for you to really come here? You need to know yourself better, guys. See, I can assure you only you can find your design style, your design uniqueness from this basis. Answer. Don't think that superficial things will come to your life and you'll wake up as a world class designer. That's not what is really going to happen. And you also know it better then I don't know what's the point? People are expecting that, right? So don't imagine like a cinema or something like people do they sing a song and they become a big rich guy. That's not really going to happen. Remove those background music, noise or whatever effects come into reality. Unless until you do this first activity, I would say you can skip this podcast and listen something else. You don't have this. I would say this is not for you. But if you are action oriented guy, take any paper or pen near you. Pause this podcast and write about this for few minutes. I hope you would have done this, okay? Because I'm always telling you if you're not taking action, your life is not going to change. Listening to this podcast, going to mentorship program, taking a lot of design courses, going to design school, joining in Coursera Udemy courses, all these things are fine guys. If you're not taking action, nothing is going to change in your life for the things whatever you learned. Okay? The second important segment of this podcast is exploring your world. See, you need to have your diverse experience and creativity. Definitely after you explored yourself, you could have found some interest or you can find some good challenges or you can find some good what you call moments of your life where you really felt the design could be yours. Definitely you need to explore those into more deeper sense. Like let's say you could have found yourself more excited when you visited a car showroom, when you visited an art museum, or when you have talked to some of the designers in your experiences. Right? That could have triggered that interest in you. Explore that diverse experience and go to that again and again. You need to travel, guys. You need to expose Yourself to different culture, art, backgrounds or environments or some places or some people whom you wanted to really talk do this. Exactly what I'm telling you guys. Then you will see yourself in a different light. Because a lot of people have explored their design career because of their own exploration of themselves. And people have really not who have paid close attention to this detail. No, they will not find themselves anywhere. They'll be just growing in the crowd, making some normal stuffs. Nobody will be able to help them because they don't know whom they are. First of all, leave the world if you don't know yourself. Knowing thyself is the first point, Right? So I told you if you're not exploring that definitely you will stuck and you will do lot of efforts, you will learn lot of subjects, you will do a lot of designs, but you will not be celebrated and you will not become that big impactful designer, whatever you are thinking in your mind. Because people have really explored and become successes because of this exploration across the world. So travel a lot, explore what really makes you interesting. And you can pause this podcast and think about that moment and start planning your travel. Spend one day a week or maybe few hours a week to explore that. Have some virtual events also if you're not able to travel. Okay, so take action. The third important thing is embrace those challenges, guys. See a transformative power of challenges in discovering your strength and weaknesses is very important because if you know that something is your weakness, if you know something is your strength, go and explore that. Go out of your comfort zone and explore more. Let me tell you guys, people who have really made a very big career have really embraced those challenges. There was a mass use who got a world's best mass use in that particular massaging technique. Okay. And this is a real story which was told by one of my senior. So this particular mass use was practicing a lot and she's been rejected in mass use in that particular spa. And you know they give a very good massage and treatment and therapeutic session, right? So this is a very hard demanded field and a lot of people pay thousands and thousands of rupees to get that premium treatment and therapy. But the high demand is always for the mass use. You are really doing that with a more skillfulness. So there was a mass use of women. So she had a very personal problems and she's not able to continue in this massive field. But she was very much determined and you know what, after a lot of rejections, she got selected. And right now she is one of the top renowned mass years in the world. Can I tell you something? Now comes the real story. These Matthews, whatever I told you, the Matthews, she doesn't have both of her hands. Can you imagine that? This is what is a real challenge, guys. You have to know what's your strength, what's your weakness? You know what? Because of that, because of she doesn't have means. Because of one accident, she lost her hands. And after that she started practicing with her both legs. You know what it's most difficult to learn with both legs. And she used to take care of her family, she used to take care of her well being. And she has to take care of her entire thing. And apart from this, both hands left out, she has to take care of her own living also, right? And on top of that, she practiced with both legs. You know what, using the legs, if a massage is done, that person will have more impact. And learning that particular technique requires a lot of time. I think you would have seen lot of legs mass use technique. Right? People use their fingers in their legs to trigger certain pressure points and relieve those stress and strains. And they give a therapy out of it. See guys, it's not about what you got or what you don't have. It's about your determination towards taking up the challenge to become that creator. And she used lot of creative techniques and she is the number one highly demanded Matthews. Imagine how much different type of techniques she would have explored to do that therapy in a more effective way. So reflect on these things. Okay? Yes. So the fourth important thing is learn from others. Definitely. Instead of going and talking to lot of people, understand what made them big designers, understand what made them thought process changed to become a designer, understand why they have created this design, understand what made them really become this designer. See guys, I'll tell about mentorship program here. Choose a very good mentor. I'm not telling you join this program. I'm telling you join any program. But have a proper seeking guidance and a mentorship and an accountability or even you can talk to a lot of experienced designers because then and only you will see the other side of your design as well. You'll find your mistakes, you'll find your realities. People do really stay in their comfort zone. Don't do that come out of that. Okay, so the fifth is draw from different, different biographies. Guys. This is a very, very powerful technique. I would say read lot of design inspiration stories and people who have really become designer. Read about Leonardo da Vinci, read about different designers like Dieter Rams, like Don Norman. And you can read about Steve Jobs, you can read about Tim Cook, you can read about Jonathan Eve. I would say so. These are all the people who have really shaped their design career in a more different way. If you get really inspired, guys, definitely, guys, I'm telling you, you will start influencing yourself in a different way. I'm not asking you to copy them and do that. Exactly. No, that's not the point. If you start read about biographies, you will get more inspirations and sometimes your deep inner core will express the outside. In fact, this is the sixth important part of this podcast which is express yourself. Do not get shy. Do not get fear. Do not have a fear of judgment. Hey, what if people think that? What if people are commenting on my feedback, on my concept, on my idea? Nobody thinks anything, guys. You are the one who are thinking about that. Nobody has a time to really do that. Everybody is busy on their own way to find their own career, to find their improvement, to improve them, right? So don't be shy to express yourself. If you really wanted to see or redesign expression, you have to definitely express yourself. Write about yourself. Now I'll tell you an important information. Guys, pause this podcast. Start a very good blog in a platform called Medium M E D I U M. It's a very good platform where premium content are available. Start writing about yourself and try to create a free account in Spotify. You can do it. Don't think that people will listen to you. What if they think no or don't think the other way. Hey, who is going to listen my podcast if I'm recording my voice? Who's going to really write my. Read my blogs? If I'm writing a blog, it's not for others. You're doing it for yourself. Can I tell you something, guys? This is my 103rd podcast and 103rd episode. I have discovered myself a lot after recording so much of content. I've talked to a lot of students, I've taught a lot of design subjects. I. I've mentored personally hundreds and hundreds of students. I did group coaching, I did individual coaching. When I started expressing myself through Medium Blog and I also have blog. You can read that and you can listen to all of my previous episodes. The way in which I am giving you information now compared to the first episode will be much more different. The way in which I have expressed myself is more clearer. I got so much of clarity in design process when I talked about to different designers and start teaching them. So record a podcast at least five episodes. Guys. You don't have to be hard on yourself. Just talk for few minutes. 23 minutes and tell what you really think about design. Tell what made you really become a designer. That's enough. And if you listen to this again, guys, you know what you will see yourself expressing in a different way each and every time. When I record a podcast, I hear it once myself and that really re retrospects yourself. So think about the six important point, guys. Know yourself, know thyself, explore the world and travel to different places and the moments where you really felt you wanted to become a designer. And definitely know your strength and weakness and think about them as your story. Okay. And learn from others and get inspired by reading their biographies, networking with different designers and finally, don't be shy to express yourself. Express, express, express. Because your personal journey of express is the real way to show your design style to come out of this. If you're really listening to this podcast, I would have. If you would have listened to this podcast, you will have six important parts written to you right now with the six points. Whatever you've written, go and take immediate action guys. I'm definitely sure you will see a lot of difference in way in which you think about design will definitely change and impact in your design. Okay. It's a slow process. Do this for at least 21 days, this exploration and definitely challenge me in this podcast. Also, if you find some changes happening to you and if you are not finding changes, maybe you would have done some little mistakes. You can write about this in my podcast because I believe podcast should be two way. Normally it's a one way but I would say I have opened a chat in this podcast. What do you think about this podcast? Honestly, you can write about. Hey Jagtish, I've tried. I explored myself and this is where I stuck and this is where I'm not able to grow. This is where I'm not able to express myself. I'll be more than happy to give a special one to one session with you. And again, that's not for everybody. That for few selected consistent listeners I'm able to give them because after listening to my one to one clarity session for just 20 to 30 minutes, lot of people have really felt difference. Some people have really got job in 15 days, in five days, in three days, in 20 days, in 45 days, people have really made their career decision and people have got more clarity in a single call with me for 10 minutes to choose design as their big career. Because having talked to 12,500 students, you would have understood how it is going to be impacting you when you have the session. Okay. Thank you so much, guys. Give me best star rating if you find this podcast useful and in Apple and Spotify. And if you need my mentorship support, definitely, I'll be more than happy to help you.
