Jagadeesh P walks through a five-point checklist for designers deciding between freelance and full-time work: time management, skill development, passion, energy, and long-term thinking. The framework helps you figure out which path actually fits your life.
Whether to take a freelancing or a full time design job. I'm really confused, Jagdish, what to do, right? Many people have this dilemma. Hey my friends. And everybody is telling I'm just getting pulled away by the money, what freelance is giving and the freedom of time. But full time has a consistent income. Like lot of people have this kind of a dilemma and they keep in that for a longer time. They don't get clarity at all. Pulled away from people, society, surrounding online, everything. Right? So this particular podcast is going to give you a check, a five different checklist. Like how you can make sure you decide something rock solid for your career whether it's full time or freelancing or maybe a combination based on that. Okay, so let's dive into this topic, everybody take a lot of notes and implement it. Welcome guys, welcome. This is Jagdish. Thank you for staying tuning with me in Design for Change podcast. Thank you for subscribing my channel in Spotify. And today we are going to have a clarity in taking up full time or freelancing jobs. Okay, so it is actually a very big pain point to be very honest. Okay. A lot of people have this confusion. They waste lot of time lingering here and there and they are not having a progress at all. Okay. If you are in that particularly you have to take notes and you have to self check because this is going to give you step by step taking care of your health, well being, personal time, professional success and all. Everything matters right? When it comes to making a very good decision. Okay, the first check, what you can do is time. See, time is the biggest commodity we cannot skip. Where is your time going? A lot. Let's say if you're doing a freelancing, how much hours you're doing? Like let's say if you're doing two hours, what kind of income you're generating. If you're doing 20 hours, what kind of income you're generating. Many people, I have seen 80 percentage people don't have this medication properly. Take an Excel sheet, calculate the hours, calculate the money. It's as simple as that. If you're not having this clarity, intuitively you can't decide anything. Guys, again, for full time, we know monthly, how much is there? Convert it as every day, eight hours you're working in full time. Okay, let's say if your salary is 50,000, you can divide it by eight per day, 250 days per year. Okay. Remaining days is going to be holiday, Saturday, Sunday, festival, etc. And then you will get a Hoverly rate for a full time job. Similarly, for freelancing, you can calculate that and decide which is going to give you larger benefit in terms of time and money. Whatever you are going to get out of it. If you are able to get lot many hours spent and you are getting making low income in freelancing, leave that option. That's not going to have a bigger impact in you. Hey Jagdish, I'm not worried about income, but I'm worried about skill set. Then it comes to a second checklist. Okay? If that first checklist is time commodity, make sure you are crossing that. If you're having that clarity in time, go ahead and do freelancing. If your time chart is saying freelancing is better, if it says full time is better, go ahead, your job is done. Okay? If you're not getting that, if you're taking it, then come for the second which is skill set. Hey Jagdish, time is okay. I can spend hours. What kind of a skill sets you're going to learn by doing freelancing? Write it down in a paper. Think about it. If you're learning that kind of a versatile skill set in freelancing, like let's say if you're doing only graphic design for a longer amount of time in freelancing, you're not going to lead anywhere, guys. Even the hover rate will come down, even the customer dynamics will change, even the market will change. You know that, right? The kind of digitalization what we had five years before and now is drastically different. If you are a freelancer who are still making posters, you are in a danger zone. If you are in a full time, automatically your company will change to newer needs. It will ask you to learn newer skills. So you will be having that learning curve and you will be implementing that. If your organization is doing bad, then you will be thrown out again. You'll have to consider this also. So if you're full time, if your freelancing is giving you that flexibility to learn different skills, go for it. If it is not, then okay, stick with the full time job. Okay? This is the second important element. I'll tell you one interesting thing guys, because see, if you're doing a freelancing with a client, like let's say if you're doing some posters, if you're doing some only websites, okay, Ask your client or a customer, hey, you have any kind of a CRM? If you have any kind of a website or application or posters or videos or something like can I create an ecosystem of solution for you. By that you're going to learn a lot, many skills. You're going to learn UX research, you're going to learn product design in a holistic perspective. You're going to learn physical product design. You can in fact collaborate with other people to deliver a better product experience. If you're having that variety of skill set developed, go for freelancing. If that is not there in your base, go for a full time. Or you can find a better freelancer to get this if you are in the second checklist. Okay, important element, third very important which is interest and passion. See guys, even if you spend a lot of time, even if you get a lot of money, even if you learn a lot of skills, but you're not passionated in doing freelancing, then don't do it. Lot of people are happy with nine to five job. They want Saturday, Sunday off. Yeah. For them straight away the option is good. You go for a full time, simple. But if you wanted a time freedom, if you wanted to have what you call money freedom, if you wanted, if you are really also interested and passionate like some people, they do a lot of freelancing work and they are, even though they get donor money, they are interested, they are passionate, they are more passionate in creating that particular craft. They wanted to build that textile, they wanted to build that screens, they wanted to build that products, they are damn happy about it. So choose that passion over it. And the important element is check with your family, check with your life partner. If you're not married, check with your mom, dad, like how your dependency is going to affect your family. Hey Jagdish, what is this here? I'm telling you guys, if you're not succeeding in this checklist, in this third point, you're not leading anywhere. Even if you choose full time as a good option or a freelance as a food option, you are going to get backfired. I'm telling you, personal happiness is first important, family is first important. Then comes professional success. I'll be recording a separate podcast for you guys later stage. Okay? A lot of people take it granted. Again, you need to check your interest and passion aligning with your family time. If you're spending 12 hours and if you're earning a lot of money, if you're not giving time for your mom, dad or your wife or your partner, how does it going to really impact? It's going to backfire. It's going to have a big impact in your relationship. Creative industry, a lot of people get broken, a lot of people get relationship Problem because of this. Please do take care of this. If you're not doing this, even if you take a correct decision, according to you, it will not be correct. Because you are a 10 people's average of your environment and surrounding. You are pulled away by them, right? If you're not deciding based on that, you will be end up in wrong decision. But if you're making that 10 people also aligning with that particular what do you call strategy, like your creative zone, your partner is also very much okay with this. Your family is resonating, your friends, your circle, you're going to create a huge impact with the decision whatever you make. Whether it's a full time or freelancing. Good third check. Now let's go for the fourth check. Energy management. You might not be expecting this topic from me, right? How much energy do you have after doing the freelancing? See guys, I've seen people who do eight hours of freelancing and they still have a lot of energy. Definitely you need to do that freelancing guys. Because you're not exhausted, right? People if sometimes they do two hours of full time job also they get exhausted. They get bound by this nine to five. Boss, I need to just get done for satisfying others. If you have that kind of energy distracted, then full time is not for you. So after you do a lot of effort, after you spend a lot of time, after you learn a lot of skills, even if you're passionate or your family is okay, how much energy you left? Because people who have lot of energy, they'll dominate. Have you seen people who come opposite to opposite? No. In road or in your walk, People who have lot of energy will go straight. People who have lesser energy will walk down and they will leave the way for them. Jagdish. No, I'm having a lot of energy. Let me go straight. Don't do this guys. It should come intuitively and spontaneously. Check that if you are that person who comes down, then you have lesser energy, then you're spending your energy maximum somewhere else. So check your energy. Whichever is giving maximum, either freelancing or full time. Then you will get a clarity. The fifth and the most, most most important thing is which nobody does, very, very very few people does, is long term thinking how now you are doing full time or a freelancing is going to impact you after 10 years. What year? 10 years. What I will. You have to predict it guys. If you don't have that thinking, please think now. There is a template to do. If you don't know how to do it. Jump in. I'll teach you in my course, in my program, I teach and help students to create that you cannot intuitively say in 10 years after, I'll start an industry. In 10 years after, I'll do farming. In 10 years after, I'LL do politics. In 10 years after, ILL take rest and I'LL take vacation. 90% people say this, right? Nobody does it. They do something different. What they do. So there is a template to cross check yourself in 10 years after what you do in five years after. How do you do in one year after what you will be doing? There is a goal setting, There is an action oriented step. There is a habit forming patterns. After that only you can cross check yourself in 10 years. Exactly. This is what I'm going to be doing. I'm going to be starting up a design industry, Jagdish. After 10 years, if that is your answer, check whether what you're doing freelancing or full time is going to add any value for that. Hey Jack, this 10 years I wanted to become an entrepreneur. I wanted to give a lot of opportunity for the designers. Check whether what you're doing in your freelance or a full time is going to impact that in 10 years. I wanted to really come out of this field and I wanted to start something. What do you call which is more of agriculture, more of social service? If that is your goal, make sure whatever you're doing is going to align for that. If that is in alignment, yes, do that option. Whether if it's freelancing is good, do it for that 10 year option. 10 year goal. If full time is good, go for it again guys, fifth point. Nobody takes care. They take it granted. Later will do, right? People have that. What do you call thinking? That is why you mindlessly do what you're doing and you don't get results and you don't get a clarity in what you're doing. These people simply, my coach used to say these people don't have goals. They just get pulled away by salaries, month on month bills or their friends or relatives. People who have absolute clarity and a clear, written, visualized goals. They will know whether what they're doing is making sense or not. Whether it's a freelancing or a full time. Right? So let me repeat you guys time. If you are able to manage that and if you're able to get a good return on investment for that, then it's going to be worth if you can go for full time or freelancing. Second check is learning skill set and growing accordingly. Third is your interest and passion should match with of family and overall well being and the health you're going to spend and health is definitely going to impact. Guys, if you're spending a lot of time, your health is gone, right? That's what I told you. Family happiness, personal well being and your interest passion should align then you choose that option. Fourth is energy management. Whichever gives you maximum energy, choose that. Fifth is long term thinking. After 10 years. If you are having this dilemma, apply these five steps right now in a paper and check and measure yourself in a scale and then you can will have a clarity whether to go for full time or a freelancer.
