How do I convince my parents -relatives to study design as a career

Welcome to yet another episode with me for the Design and Change podcast. Thank you for staying tuned in. So today we are going to actually talk about one of the major pain points which some of the design students, or maybe you start design as their career phase two. You know, what is that? I like design. But everybody is saying, right, who is that? Everybody know that. So there could be a lot of people. First is our parents or our relatives or our brother, sister, our own family members. Second is our friend circle. Right. The third is our, what do you call the environment which we grow on our social media community, our office, our school. So these three always keeps on making our own decisions and influencing us. So we are made up of the 10 people who we talk to on average. It said like that, right? My mentor used to say their average happiness, their average wealth, their average professional success will be yours. Nothing more, nothing big. So everybody is actually telling each and everything which they don't even know about. Some people know it, most people don't know it. But you have decided, let's assume you are okay, you decided that you wanted to go forward. But Jagdish, my parents are not accepting because they don't know about design. Or maybe your friends are. They're not happy with your decision or you itself first not happy. That's where another important factor kicks in. Okay, so this is the podcast which is going to address this particular thing. So dive in, guys. Yes, so this is one of the important topic which normally students talk to me about. Okay. When I go into a free mode of their conversation and I ask the question, why did you really choose design? People trigger these answers. Okay, why? Is a very powerful question. So the first problem, what they face is their own family member, right? That's what they really have to convince them first. See guys, let me tell you one thing. First is you will have to show what you're doing. If you're designing something or if you're trying to do something or maybe if you're building some screen or if you wanted to do some trial or if you're doing some kind of art or sketch or anything related to design or, or maybe craft or any kind of a small things which you're doing, you need to first show it to your people who are nearby. Okay. See, once they start seeing you then they'll start believing you. You know what will happen. The second thing is you will start believing yourself more subconsciously. Like yeah, because we always acknowledge from others also that's how our born and brought up and everything is being also shaped so internally we'll get that programming. Yes, people are approving it, people are acknowledging it. So why don't I try? Why don't I make it as a career? So that confidence will start from here. Let's say it's on the other side. If the first person whom you're showing your designs to, so they might actually tell, no, I don't think you are good at it, then you get a setback. So that's also one thing possible. So that's why it's always good to show the work or demonstrate the work to lot many people whom you are, whom you stay with, whom you really love, to whom you really associate with. See, end of the day, no parent is bad or no well wisher is bad. You need to choose right person to get this feedback. That's the second thing. First is your subconscious confidence. Second is getting approval from your parents. See, end of the day they really wanted you to become successful. Right. Only thing is you'll have to just convince them or show them. Convincing is not the correct word. Just make them understand the benefits of why you're doing it. Right. It's always about showing the benefits of a product. That's how people buy. So it's not about convince. So when you're doing something, when you're showing something, when you're demonstrating, like let's say if you're making a craft, let's say if you wanted to become a product designer, you are just building a small pen stand with a usable or unusable material. What is there in your house which is like a Surfax or dappa, maybe a small dapa. Okay, to be very honest, I did that first thing and my parents also appreciated that. It's not like it's not a big product or something, but that's how you first start doing it. Like so far I have not did that, but I had some idea, I just sketched some ideas and I used that particular pen stand in a very different way. On the sideways, I can put staplers in the left side, I can put some small, small pins in. So it's like a multi stand where in the shop it is not there. So something like you demonstrate or show, then people be able to also acknowledge you. Oh, this guy is serious. I think his work shows something. And you know what? Those are the people who will definitely support you. The third is stay away from the people who don't know about this field or who don't know about you properly because definitely they'll pull you back. Talk to people who are really serious. And let me tell you one thing, even if these three factors is okay, like let's say subconsciously, if you're confident, your parents are also accepting, your relatives or friends are also accepting, next comes the big barrier. Jagdish, I don't have resource, I don't have money. That's really an excuse, guys, let me tell you very honestly, okay? Because when you decide something very confidently that you wanted to go and pursue it, you know what universe will bring you lot many things. You will get money, you will get admission in one of the best schools. You will get all the kind of resources. You will, you will get help from people whom you have never thought of. So it's not about money or resource, it's about your intention when you are deciding on something. So that is why one of the first things I said subconsciously you need to get that confidence. If you're weak at that point of time, you will just go away from this point. You would have decided three people would have said okay, your parents, relatives, everything. But you will just think, oh, is it really worth to take that risk? Many, many people go and stop here. They don't really what you call crack beyond this. That's why a lot of creative minds is getting switched off. And I've personally heard from a lot of students and I've also reprogrammed certain students who have really taken up design as their career forward. And I'm really happy to do that because until unless I find that exact pattern, I'm not able to help them, right? So this is one of the tipping point. Everybody stops. And I'll tell you in this podcast how you can cross the tipping point if you are that zone. Particularly the first is if you're damn serious, go and apply for some of the big design institutions. You will get some scholarships. Again, if you're going for some courses or coaching, ask for a good scholarship. And if you really don't have money, if you're really from a very financially not good background and make sure you just prove that some people get income, they have their parents earning, but they say I don't have money, that's not the case. If you're genuinely like if you don't have income source, but you're damn serious, you can show because there are a lot of good institutes and coaching centers and everything who can help you with a very good scholarship, okay? And second is you'll have to find some good foundations where you can go and approach them, tell your intention, show your works, whatever you did Right. Like let's say a sketch or maybe a small prototype. Just show their intention. Hey, I'm damn serious. I'm. I'm like, I don't know where to start. People would be happy to help you. There are a lot of foundations available in India. You can go and search on Google and there are good scholarship websites available. You can do that. The third is nowadays banks are offering lot of EMI plans. Like with the normal debit card itself, you can pay later option has come. Even with credit cards you can get some of your relatives or friends who can support you in starting up with that. You don't have to spend lakhs and lakhs of rupees. You can start with some basic programs for that. Because there you get some very quality materials also. Okay. And the fourth is you can also start searching some free materials. But that will be like a mindless search. I would not recommend that. But yeah, you can do that first to make sure your subconscious confidence is right or wrong. Maybe to reaffirm yourself. Thereby you can find some good amount of materials. You can start studying but you will getting some pre warmed up and other things. Okay. But you cannot go and become something like very different. Unless until this last point what I'm going to tell you is going to happen. Okay, we have discussed about getting scholarships. We have discussed about getting some foundational support or some EMI plans with different banks. And also searching about free materials. And also the fifth one is finding very good network. You know this is very, very important. You cannot say I don't know how to network. There are a lot of materials in YouTube. LinkedIn. LinkedIn is an exclusive platform to start finding some people. If you type product designers, you'll find hundreds of designers. Just go and give them randomly a connect. Just invite them to talk. Don't just ask for teach me design. Don't just ask for give me some job referrals. Just genuinely ask them and build a communication. Seeing brother or sister. I'm really interested in learning design. I can see you're working in one of the big mnc. Like can you just tell me how I can get started? Can I tell you something again? Many people stop here. They don't take it forward. They're very shy. They don't want to ask anybody. Break out that shy guys. Nobody's going to judge anybody. Everybody has their own way to look at their life and everybody has their own job. Okay? So just stop this BS and then just start talking to the people and just understand what they're seeing. Definitely. Very Very successful people will be very happy to just introduce you to what they're doing and they'll actually tell you, hey this is something like a design what I'm doing which is called UI UX design, which is called product design, which is called graphic design which is called so and so. They'll tell you and they'll tell you, hey this is what software we use. This is. What is this? That something like you get some inspiration and ideas and connections and materials and resource. This is what is the real, real tipping point where you can come out of this zone. Once you get enough confidence with the person whom you're associating with, then you start building your program. Can I tell you something? Money will come automatically after this Ajagdish who will come and give me money? Yes, you will get it. Something has really changed in your mind. When you start tuning to that frequency, universe will start making you situations and circumstances. To give you resource, to give you money, to give you material, to give you knowledge. Saying where you wanted to go, where you wanted to go and study. You won't believe my brother, when he wanted to do catering, he was very interested in cooking and other things we don't know like how to take it forward. He's damn interested, he's damn serious. But my relative aunt who has actually suggested a very big institute in India which is like same like IIT's hotel management has for Indian Hotel Institute of Hotel Management which is like ihm. If we would have not known that piece of information, my brother would be studying in some of the substandard institutes and he would have been in a different career. Right now he's one of the big chefs. He's working in star hotels. But that kind of information will come when you tune your frequency to a higher level. And when you are in that damn search and thirst, people will run and help you no matter what. So don't just put your excuses saying nobody will accept me, no, I don't have money. Except it's all bs. You will have to just keep your intention clear and you have to be highly motivated. And when you are building that kind of a connection and network, people will come and give you information. So start today, Give at least 10 to 20 connections in LinkedIn. Give at least 20 friend request in Facebook. Give lot of groups you can join in Facebook LinkedIn. Just keep on just asking them. Hey bro, can you help me also? Just written their help to them. Don't just keep on asking, try to help them also. Hey brother, you are here. Okay, so My brother is working in so and so industry. If you need any job referral, please feel free to ask me. I'll be happy to help me. Because your brother might be working in something else. You can also refer. Of course those people will also be in search of better opportunities and career and other things. Right? So always have this exchange mindset and always have this helping mindset. Not exchange, just help them. Just help them. Just. Just give them more than what they are giving you. When you have this intention clear in this in your mind, then you won't feel any shy to talk to any people. Okay, so start off with this and this entire cycle of your design career will be in a totally upside way. And I've also told you some of my stories, how I started design and how my brother also went into his passion. So it's not about design career or anything. It's about how you set your intention and how clear you are. If you are interested, show something, do something, demonstrate a small artwork or something which can prove others or which can itself prove you so that you become so confident with that you will be able to literally break any barriers in your career and you will become a world class designer. Whether you study in a big institute or small institute or coaching or anything. It's fine. Okay. Yes. So this is actually one of the insight which I really came across while I'm talking to thousands and thousands of students.
