Jagadeesh P walks through an 11-step strategy for designers and freshers to land internships or jobs: engage with recruiters, build networks, offer free design work, and pitch yourself confidently. He covers how to ask recruiters to tweak a brief so you can show what you can do.
Particularly if you are a designer, particularly if you're a starting fresher in design. It will be a hell of a lot of problem to get into the industry. People leave it because of this. One big reason. People apply in lot of portals like let's say LinkedIn, Naukri, Glassdoors. Indeed. Nobody gives them a proper response or people ask for portfolio. People give design tasks. But you will not be getting selected. You'll be getting one word from the hr. We'll get back to you, we'll connect with you later. How do you really crack this? I kind of cracked this, guys. I worked with my students using one of the great approach and it worked definitely. It's a beautiful technique and the bare minimum results. What I can guarantee is you will get this particular thing right when you do it once or twice or thrice. Okay, so this is exactly called how to get a tweak brief from a recruiter in order to get you hired being a fresher. So take a lot of notes. Let's jump into this topic. So how does it really work? How do you really get a tweaked brief from your recruiter in order to get you a very, very faster job in design? Like let's say if you wanted to join as an intern, if you wanted to join as a full time designer, how do you really get that? It may seem very difficult to talk to a recruiter, but if you follow these 11 steps, what I'm saying, you will get it cracked, guys. Okay, It's a beautiful strategy and you have to listen it out carefully without any, what do you call it, biases and pre notions. Just try it out and let's see how it works. Because I have a description in my podcast which you can really write to me how it will work because we tried it and it worked. Definitely it works for you as well. Guys. Okay, so the very first thing is I would always say do a research about the company and find suitable design studios, which is okay for you in terms of work culture, in terms of compensation, in terms of training and support system, in terms of growth down the line and in terms of the industry track records and how it's going to help you if you do that research and find a suitable design studio. That would be the first step to do. Okay. Second thing is build a lot of network first. In order to build network. That's why the first step is very important. You have to research about the company a lot. If you don't know about that company, get a LinkedIn. Connect with those people who are working there, who are designers, who are recruiters or somebody get the information offline from them. Okay, so that would be the ideal way to get the exact apt information rather than seeing their website, social media pages. See, the company will market itself with the very best practices what they have, right? Same like what you call same like what a candidate shows the best top skills to market himself. So sometimes you'll have to know the reality. So that's why the LinkedIn Connect and talking to the people offline may help you a lot. Okay, after you build this network, go to the third step which is called do a service kind of a thing. Okay, so ask them for a free of cost based on service. Like let's say it could be a one month work, it could be a two months work, it could be a two weeks work or it could be a two days work also. Okay, so tell them that I'm going to do a service for you. Okay, so it's a design services, it's a free of cost, I'm not expecting any compensation for that. Okay, and just tell them in the fourth step, what is the expectation of a candidate you think who is going to join your design studio? What are the kind of projects do you have? What is the level of skill set which you expect? What are the softwares you use? How much time do you typically deliver a project? So ask a lot of details. Asking questions is step four. Okay, Tell them the communication you're going to work for free of cost. Fourth is ask them good questions and get it clarified. The fifth important step is now you will get an understanding of the company in and out. You'll get the core values. Okay, so tell them confidently and build a trust saying yes, I'm really interested in working with your company and I'm taking up your project and get them yes. With this answer. See till the step four you're just validating that company whether it's suitable for you or not by collecting information, talking to hr, talking to designers, and now you found out that this is exactly suitable for you. Okay Jagdish, what happens if it's not suitable for me? Go to the next list, go to the next company. That's why you have to maintain a good Excel sheet while you're entering the data. If you are in my mentorship program, I would normally suggest you to have an Excel sheet which is a common data which we build. We have around 50, 60 plus design studio data in that. So whoever is applying for any job in this studios, they can able to first see the Excel sheet, know the data and then they will apply for it. See, we wanted to build a reservoir of 3,500 to 4,000 design studios which is available in India. We want to do it. That's what we are doing in our program also. And it's a very specialized sheet. We wanted to build it in a very bigger manner. So after you do this, the sixth step would be take your action with 100% efforts. Give your best. Okay? Whatever you wanted to learn regarding completing the project, go and learn it. If you wanted to really understand in a deeper way, please connect with lot of people in their company, ask them any support if required. Do as much as depth of work, as much as you can in that period and give your best of the best work. Okay, See so far whatever we have collected the information and then we told the HR that we are going to work for them. Give them this thing and then give them a brief. Ask them a brief and I'll work for free of cost. All these things is boiling down to this. If you're not putting 100% efforts, what happens is you'll get into a big trouble. Okay, I assume you are doing this perfectly. Okay. So after this now you can able to validate your task or activity what they've given with your mentors or with your seniors or whomever you wanted to talk and submit it. Okay? Ask them one more permission that if they can put it in their portfolio, definitely they'll say yes guys, because you're doing a service for them, right? You tell, I'll mask your client name, this, that, but I'll not give you any confidential information so they'll be more happy to encourage you as well. The eighth step is provide a proposal pitch here. This is very important step. After you do the project, it's not like you submit through email Google Drive this, that pitch them. Hey, see I've really understood your problems of your company and I found a market and I found a product and I found a service which can help you build your customer base or client base using this particular way of thinking. And I'm proposing you this is one of the best value proposition which I made. What I've did to you is a worth of million dollars rupees of business turnover and revenue as an asset. I'm really happy to do that. I'm not asking you for a job, I'm not asking you for a compensation. What I'm asking you for is potential interview or a design task or another internship opportunity with you which is going to prove me where I'm exactly fitting your organization. You will have to just confidently talk about this. Guys, the eighth step is very important. See, after talking to a lot of people, I found this. People don't ask confidently. That is their problem. They do all the work, they do all the design tasks, they go for all the interviews. People don't have the confidence to ask what they really deserve for. So you have worked with them, you have collected information, you understood their problem and then you solved it. And then you gave your 100 percentage. Now you have to tell them that propose it like this is a very good product which I did for you in a very short span of time. Imagine if I'm working for your organization. Do you think I will be able to bring you a great value? I showed you in front of your table. So why don't you really give me a chance? At least an interview, at least a job, at least internship. Something you wanted to propose. Do that. Guys, the big problem is fear of rejection. People don't ask anything. They just do it like a donkey. They won't really think a second. Are you really deserving this opportunity or just can we ask? Nothing wrong in asking, right? Maybe. If it is yes, it's good. If it's not, if it's no and ask them why I lagged and work on the feedback. What is your problem? Why didn't they hire you? Why didn't they like your design concepts? It's very vital to understand this. Okay? Crucial step eight step guys asking ninth important step is have a follow up with these people once you have submitted and track it properly in your Excel sheet. Okay? Document everything in a very neat, clear, precise way. That's the ninth step. Tenth is iterate this till you get results. Simple guys. No designers do it. Sometimes in my community also students do it. I just push them. I tell them you hey, you will have to do it. Because they don't know the importance. And once they understood it, they will do it eventually. So even full time designers, anybody can try this technique. Guys, if you wanted to get into a big design studio, like let's say if you wanted to get into a Samsung Design Studio or LG Design Studio or Godzilla Design Studio or Mahindra Design Studio or Tata Design Studio, any big design studios. Try to connect with the HR and just recollect to use the steps, okay? Try to research out first about the company like let's say Tata or LG or Samsung and build a good network and tell them that you're going to do a free of cost work and ask them for the details of the project and everything and understand their core value, what problem they are stuck in and build their trust and try to understand and solve one of their big problem and give you 100 percentage action to complete that project and submit them and ask them a permission if they can able to put in your portfolio and provide a proposal pitch for them. Once you are able to provide a proposal pitch, follow it up and track it and iterate this process till you get results. Once if you are able to do it guys you will literally crack any industry and you will literally go into whatever goal you've set as a designer. If you do this for 10 companies, 10 design studios, I'm definitely sure two to three you will get an interview chance. If you really do it properly, you will get one or two full time job or internship as well as minimum guarantee I can give you. But you have to do it rightly. Okay? I hope this podcast would have given you clarity.
