A guide to redesigning websites and apps using psychology and science. The speaker covers visual hierarchy, page load speed, mobile responsiveness, and information architecture as key factors that shape how users experience your product.
Why redesigning in the websites and application is very important. What are the psychological reasons how people feel after seeing a redesigned website or an application? Right? So a lot of times designers put a lot of efforts, but not knowing the exact science and psychological facts behind it. And what are all the design considerations to take care before designing a website and app? In this podcast, I'm going to give you three different distinctions for each website, application and whole products and services in your whole projects. Okay? So take a lot of notes. I'm going to give you design considerations as well, which can be an implemented point for your project. Let's jump in. So this has been a very predominant talk in the designer community to really know. Like if you go for an interview, they give you a design task, they'll give you some website name, you'll have to redesign it. Maybe your customer asks for a second version of your website, a redefined version of your website to do it, right? That kind of freelancing project, all these things you will, you will get it. Let me tell you guys, website redesigning is not about aesthetics. It is a strategic move which is rooted in scientific principles to enhance your UX experience for your customer. Okay? It boosts your conversion rate. See why we are designing websites, you need to understand this. We are going to sell a product or service, right? Either you sell it or your customer sells it. So research consistently shows that a well executed redesign can yield a substantial benefit. It's a very crucial aspect, guys, for additional product design. Okay? So there is a scientific backing to it. Eye tracking studies have found numerous eye tracking studies, in fact, not just one. It has found that which was conducted by Niels and Norman group. So they revealed that users tend to focus on specific areas of a web page. Redesign can optimize these focal points. So what happens when people are really looking at this particular focal points which we discussed like let's say an attractive picture. Let's say if it's a golden ratio, it's a snail cut, then we put it in that ratio exactly the left side down, which is 3 4th of the upside is the point of schnell cut, right? So maybe I cannot explain you in this podcast, but if you go and Google schnell cut and golden ratio, you will get it. So if you place an element there, how do you people, how do the people really perceive? If you put a picture, if you put a call to action there, how do you really, how does the customer really perceive? So redesigns can optimize this focal point. So improving the chance of user Engagement it will be a key factor to improve your call to action and conversion ratio. So neuroscience and color psychology also says in research it indicates that visual elements including color schemes influences the user's emotion decision making skills. A redesign can leverage this whole knowledge to create interface that resonate with a positive user experience. Guys, see its eye tracking moment neuroscience and color psychology and loading time and user abandonment. See, studies also shows that by Google and Akamai establish a very clear correlation between website loading time and user abandonment rate if the loading time is very high. If you load lot of graphics in your design, people don't have a patience today. We are living in a very distracted less attention span Time right 9 second is the average attention span. So a website redesign can incorporate these techniques to optimize the performance. Load minimal graphics, put lower what you call typeface and lower graphics elements so that it reduces your bouncing rates and it improves your user satisfaction. See guys, this is what is very very important. So according to a case study by Adobe websites with a well executed redesign experience a 26 percentage increase in revenue on an average. Google research highlights that mobile users are five times more likely to abandon a website if it is not mobile friendly. See, it's very important. So underscoring the importance of responsive design. So that's why your website should be tablet proof, mobile proof and laptop and desktop proof. So a study by Stanford Web Credibility Research found that scientific percentage of the users make judgments about a company's credibility based on its website design. It is very, very vital. Okay, Jagdish, you said it's very vital. So how do you really work on that? First focus on user research and analytics, guys. See conduct user research. Find out who is your target audience for your website. Understand their behavior, their preferences and pain points and map it down. See utilize the web analytics tools if you want. You can use some heat maps. You can understand certain user interaction points. You can understand the bounce rates. Okay, so there is a website comparison tool which you can type in the Google you will get it. I'm not remembering this exact name. If you put like let's say I want to compare three websites like let's say Udemy, Skillshare and Coursera. Okay, These three are learning platforms. If you want to really understand the comparison of these three websites. If you put that in Google you will get a. There is a tool guys which compares you all the websites. What is the pros and cons and what is the conversion ratio? How much people use it in mobile, how much people use it in website, how much how much people use it in desktop. So it will give you complete data analytics Based on that. You need to consider how to improve that. Okay. Second important thing is focus on mobile responsiveness. No matter what, prioritize mobile as a very first priority and seamlessly make that experience happen. There are good tools like Web WordPress and Webflow and Wix which has a responsive design built in. But you can able to customize it, leverage that responsive and make it optimal viewing experience. Third is informational architecture. See, you want to optimize your website information, right? So please focus on the information architecture and make it very very simpler navigation path, make it very intuitive for the user. Let's say if your user wants to go and purchase a product in your website, if he is taking 10 different steps to achieve that, make sure you cut it down into three or four steps. Make sure you can able to automate that. Make sure if it is something like a design consideration which you can do, you can consider that as a first value and give it as a one click purchase. If people are buying it in a lot of time. So how you wanted to automate it, you have to think it through guys. You have to optimize it. That's why information architecture is really coming in picture. So use COD sorting techniques and usability refinement techniques testing to find out that structures and categorize the content. Fourth is visual hierarchy and call to action placement. Okay, so apply this eye tracking technique which is established and clearly visualize the hierarchy and guide your users essentially. Okay, so strategically place the call to action button where your users are going to see based on the heat map reports, what you got based on the conversion goal, what your customers are doing. Make sure how you talk to your how do you find your benchmarks and competitors are doing it and trying to incorporate that. Okay. The fifth important thing is page load speed optimization. If you're utilizing Google Page speed insights to identify and address elements affecting page loading times, it will be good. So compress images, minify the code and leverage browsing catching leverage browser catching to enhance website performance. So let me recap you guys. User experience is enhanced by user research and analytics. First understand it. Second is developing a mobile responsiveness site. Third is optimizing the information architecture. Fourth is understanding the visual hierarchy and call to action placement properly. Fifth is page loading speed optimization. If you're able to work on these five elements, you will see a huge improvement in your website design. And this is the consideration to take care of before going into so much of details like let's Say color graphics, this, that and all. Now let's come to another approach which is strategic redesigning of this whole thing. Okay, so utilizing the data driven insights and user Persona designs can create interface tailored to specific needs and perform and preferences to the target audience. So the approach is supported by user centered approach like let's say human computer interaction. Research has found that so every time when you are designing a product it should be human centric. That's why we are creating user Persona. That's why we are conducting user testing and heuristics. You need to understand this. See heuristic principles we have recorded in a separate podcast which is like Jacob Nielsen principles. You can able to understand that and you can just make a Google search. You will get it. Okay, so try to evaluate in a scale of 0 to 10 how much is very much compliant to heuristic evaluation in your website. Make sure it follows WCAG website content accessibility guidelines and how much you are able to get it. In figma there is a plugin which you can run through all your WCAG compliance and guidelines will be applied and you will get the errors propped. So you can able to find that and you can able to redesign that. So cognitive load should be considered very carefully guys. See you need to reduce the cognitive load through streamlined navigation and clear information architecture is supported by this cognitive load. So research in cognitive psychology emphasizes that importance of minimizing the mental effort is very important for increasing user experience. So study by Niels and Norman group found that average return on investment for usability was 9,900%. According to Forrester research, well designed UI could raise a website conversion rate up to 200 percentage. Behmar Institute reports found that 68% of the users leave a website because it's poorly designed. Registration forms and highlighting the impact of designs of user interface and user experience as see guys, there are enough information to understand why designing overall website and mobile app and customer product experience is very vital. You can take any method to do it guys. You can do it in a design process. You can do agile methodology, you can do a service design thinking, you can do a behavioral economics. Again, behavioral economics is a very deep topic. We don't have to go into it, but you can choose any method and an approach. But end of the day please make sure you are following the consideration whatever I told you. Then you will see a surge of improvement in your design of your websites, your applications, your responsiveness and you know what guys, McKinsey research indicates that companies employing a customer centric design approach outperformed the competitors by 85 percentage in sales. A study published in Hardware Business Review found that companies focusing on entire customer journey saw 30% increase in their customer satisfaction. A State of DevOps report by Puppet and CircleCI shows that organization embracing DevOps practice experience 46 times more frequent software deployments indicating the efficiency gains of iterative development. So understand this key aspect if you are a developer also you can able to get this clarity why it is Let me recap you the steps guys. User research and analytics mobile responsiveness, information architecture, visual hierarchy and call to action placement, page loading and speed optimization and creating user Persona and understanding the need creating user testing parameters and heuristic evaluation criteria of Jacob Nielsen Law and understanding the cognitive load theory and consideration of you before designing any product. And finally the methodology. You can choose any design methodology, agile methodology, Scrum approach, design process, convergent divergent thinking, no problem, but you can able to improve your whole customer experience to next new level. Okay, I hope you would have understood the importance of these steps. Take an action immediately and and follow it. Make sure you subscribe this to this particular episode to get more of this in the future and also write me in this podcast. What did you take action? What is your key learnings and takeaway? If I find your learnings as very good, if you have taken a lot of notes and sharing that, I'll select you as one of my best listeners in the podcast consistently and I'll share you some goodies like t shirts and free PDF guides which you can improve your design skills in arena.
