Jagadeesh P breaks down whether knowing design tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and XD is enough to become a product designer. He covers six key points to help you figure out if the shift from graphic design is right for you, focusing on intuition and long-term impact over shiny object syndrome.
I know Photoshop, I know Illustrator, I know Adobe xd. I know Premiere Pro. I am a graphic designer. Can I become a product designer? Am I really qualified or how do I know I'm getting pulled away by lot of things which is like shiny object syndrome we call lot of shiny things are there to get attracted. How do you really verify myself? Jagdish, one of the major questions most of the people have, even people who have come into product designers still have this, what do you call something like an insider thought. Right. So I'm going to be giving you six important points to make sure whether your transition is good or whatever you are going to make a transition is good or not. Okay. For both the categories. With that we will jump into the deep aspect of choosing this. Guys, welcome guys, welcome. Welcome to my podcast. Thank you for subscribing to design for change in Spotify and Apple. Thank you so much. So there are huge number of graphic designers in India, guys, compared to a product designer. I'll tell you honestly, what is the background of it before going into the six things? Okay, see India is majorly a service based economy. It's like more of graphic design work, service related works and then we design landing pages, we design post, we design reels, we design videos, effects. So the kind of servicing economy is largely done largely there because of the Indian policy which has been laid in 1995, 2000 and 2005 because of the Prime Minister I think Mr. During the Congress party. I don't know his name exactly. So Singh. Okay, Manmohan Singh. Yeah. So he brought in a lot of IT industries and because of this, this IT advent has come. You need to understand it is majorly for servicing to foreign clients like western world, like we used to serve for America, for uk, for, for, for Europe. So that's how it has been already there so that nature is already reflecting in us. Each and every designer know they have a piece of work, they have a piece of skill, they can contribute. We are even if you work in a creative industry in India, it's largely caters to service needs. We don't have an edge to really create something. So it's very much understood that this is how the evolution has happened in the past 20 to 25 years. So graphic design, Photoshop, Illustrator, all these things are very, very common. And people who are having this proficiency is largely available compared to the people who know product design skills like research, like sketching, like ideation, creating new concepts, talking to people, interviews, making a final ecosystem of Sol thinking something for the people 10 years after. So this is slightly a new thing for each and everybody. So you need to understand that first. Okay, so with that context at the background, what you are currently now or maybe you might be a product designer or graphic designer. That's totally okay. But now we are going to discuss the six things to make sure this particular thing is correct for you or not. Okay, the first thing what Graphic designers or the people who are working for freelancing or some they normally get pulled away by shiny objects. I clearly told you shiny objects syndrome, right? Hey Jagdish. I work for this Photoshop Illustrator. It was so cool here I work in it. I want to become a product designer here where we can create even more cool websites, cool applications, cool physical products. Even that is also product. Everything is product, right? End of the day we are going to service a give a product or offering or a service to the customer or client or a business or something. So do not fall for this aesthetics. Don't get pulled away by that. Okay? Check whether you are really inclined towards it. And if that inclination is there for you, then coming into a product designer or a becoming a product designer and investing time and money to learn. That makes sense. Every graphic designer's first point is this. Getting pulled away by shiny objects. Do not do that. Even if you are a fresher who are coming from different background, make sure this point is crossing out. Don't fall for the shiny objects. Yeah, you might get attracted for shiny projects. That's okay. That is why the next point comes in. Okay, even if you're attracted for shiny object, lot of people get attracted for salary. I told you, graphic design is largely a service oriented work. Here there is no big creativity. Unlike in European countries. I've seen European countries, they pay huge amount of money for graphic designers equally to product designers, sometimes even more. The vacancy is also high. So they bring in a lot of creative elements there. Unlike we just copy paste templates and majority of the people do it. Only 20% or even less people do that. So are you really looking for salary or are you looking for career aspiration? Think about that clearly. If you have that clarity, then you can opt for it and there is nothing wrong. Guys, you can tell that honestly, that's totally fine. We don't have to hide ourselves anything. That's the second check. The third check is check whether you automatically have that intuition or not. See, this is very important. Whenever you are falling for an object or whenever you're falling for a shiny object. A good salary, all these things, fine. But Third thing is you need to check whether intuitively you are looking for a very good career aspiration in design. Sometimes if you switch off your salary mindset and you switch off your shiny objects, you tend to think clearly, close your eyes and think. Don't get pulled away by anybody. If that intuition is saying okay, I can definitely add value in product design field, go for it simple. This is how you cross check. Being a graphic designer, can you go to product design or not? Okay, the three things you can check is getting pulled away, getting salary hikes. Third is automatic intuition checking. Okay. The fourth aspect is you have really an aspiring for the changing needs. See, product design is very different five years before and now you need to know that how it has evolved being a graphic designer or being any different background you're coming from. So make sure that is aligning with you. If that career aspiration is there for the changing need, definitely you are in. Guys, you're good to go. Invest time and effort and invest money for learning in a very good program and you can do and you can become successful. I'll tell you guys, if you're not doing that, probably you will end up regretting it later. People don't do this, they just go for it. That is why they just fall for this fourth step. Okay. The fifth step is being true to yourself. First you don't have to convince anybody. You don't have to convince that hey, I am passionate in design yard but I want salary also. It's okay. Tell that. True to yourself, being true to yourself, being true to recruiters. You have to be true. If you're hiding something else. I'll tell you guys one interesting statistics. Okay. A lot of people has been removed in middle management system in design in India compared to freshers or higher level. Because freshers somehow will adopt to different environment and they'll be low paid. Only management will not take big call to pay them lot. Top management people, they have a strategy, they have a skill set. They make policy and decision. They escape middle management people really suffer. People who are having 10, 14, 15 LPA, 20 LPA, they are removed in no matter time because of incompetency in skill. Because of they are not having clarity because of management rules changed because of economic downturns. See how much factors are influencing. So if you're true to yourself, you will definitely not get carried away by this point. Okay, the sixth important point is career impact. See guys, you need to know how much career impact it's going to really have inside you. See whatever you are having Inside. No, it will grow. When you are becoming a big designer, when you are becoming a big product designer. If you are having a different thought, make sure you're clarifying it now or as you leave that this field is not for you. That's totally fine, you don't have to. I've spent a lot of time for learning the graphic design skills portfolio design skills, design skills. That's okay, you can back off now. That's totally fine. Rather than regretting after three, four years, that's not good, right? So think about your career impact clearly. Very very clearly. Discuss with a lot of people, discuss with internally yourself, have a checklist, have a template. Normally I give you in my student a week's time to decide whether they're inclined towards design or not. I'll make sure they're evolving themselves and making sure they're telling clearly why they wanted design and why they wanted product design and why they wanted to really add value to the people by solving problem. That's if you are having that clarity come for it. If you wanted to make quick bucks, that's okay, no problem. You can do that freelancing for shorter amount of time and leave it. That's totally fine. If that is your value system and internalize. Because when you grow, your internal values also grow and you tend to see that reality. And sometimes people are not very much happy to see their reality because their own things are projected. When they grow higher and people regret that feel this is not for me, then they later change it. So right now it's good to check if you are thinking about a product design. If you're thinking about more salaries or more shiny objects or your intuition is good or you want to aspire the career. If you want to be true to yourself, impact your career. Check all these six points before you decide for a product design tool. Okay, thank you so much guys. If you have found this podcast useful, you can give me a better rating.
