Jagadeesh P outlines six elements of a world-class researcher: clarity, internal happiness, critical data, unbiased observation, storytelling, and aspiration. He offers practical advice for improving your research approach and impact.
What does it really take to become an excellent researcher? Let's dive into the world class researchers mindset. Right? See there are two things, skill set and mindset. But in this podcast we're going to see what does it really take to become an excellent researcher. With that, we'll start this podcast. Everybody. Welcome, guys, welcome, welcome. Thank you for staying tuning in with me in Design for Change podcast with me, Jagdish. Thank you so much. There was a overwhelming response in all the episodes which I've been posting. Thank you so much guys. And also share with your friends who wanted to really learn lot many things in design and get a mindset. And this particular podcast is very special. Let me tell you why it is. People do lot of design projects, people do a lot of portfolios and they do freelancing. The major point, what is really missing in largely 90 percentage plus projects is the power of visualization, the power of storytelling, the power of how you really collect your information and showcase it. Right? See, when you wanted to really become a researcher, when you wanted to become a world class researcher, there are six elements which you need to take care of this. Okay, so the first element is see, just listen and understand. Okay? This is not the video for methods like primary research, secondary research, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, statistics, median, standard deviation. That's all fine. That's all methods, templates and frameworks, right? So this is actually a mindset of a researcher. I'll be recording a separate podcast also for that. So the six elements out of this first element is having clarity. What you really wanted in your life, what you really wanted in your project, what you really wanted in your particular niche or the micro niche, what you wanted to solve. People miss this. They go directly into collecting information and projecting it in the portfolio. What are, what are you doing? You need to have a clarity. Whom are you going to present this? Whom are you going to pitch this as a business idea or as a job or as a project or just a classroom presentation. So have that clarity in this aspect. Second, this is very different. Guys. Are you really happy? Internally, it's all about mindset and the happiness and the level of satisfaction what you have that reflects in your work. See, first of all, having clarity itself will give you so much of happiness and pleasure. People have lot of innate stress built before they start any project or collect information or anything. No, if you have that mindset, you will not be able to see things clearly. Even if golden data is there in front of you, you will not see it as a golden data. Right? So you need to be internally happy for this to find out. I give normally for my students an activity. If you're left with only one hour to live in this world, what three things you will do? You know you have to really empathize this. It's not like you're writing it just for a fun. If you really go deep into this, okay, now the time is 10:30. What if after 11:30 I'm not there? What I will do? Really one hour. Oh, let me call this person. Oh, let me go and meet this person. Oh, let me tell this information to this person. What you will exactly do out of the 10 things you say, pick three things that will give you real happiness and clarity in your life. Right? With that kind of internal happiness. Guys, when you go forward for research or for project or collecting data because your information and your data can flip the project, can flip the project into a great, great thing. That's the third aspect of a world class researchers mindset. Having a great, what you call flip side of the project. 1 data which can flip the project. 1 data which can bring down the project also, right? Which can change the tide of the project in a different way. People take it very granted when it comes to huge data and all you need to be very, very serious and into that kind of a seriousness to take that one information which can change the project. What if the investment goes wrongly? If your data is different, investors lose millions of dollars, right? And everybody will be after you. If you project the data wrongly, if that data is good, then millions of dollars you're going to get because of that investment and that investor is also going to get that. So it is very important to have that third mindset which is flipping the project and becoming serious. Fourth, you need to be a more observer and you need to document all this information. See, we should not be biased. When you have a mindset of a researcher, world class researcher, you need to be very, very optimistic or neither pessimistic or one of my, what do you call teachers whom I seen online. He was actually introduced by my professor whose name is Hans Rosling. You know you can search this guy, Hans H A N S Rosling R O S L I N G Don't worry, I'll be pasting you the link. Also on the YouTube this guy has made huge amount of data, very simple, complex information of this world into very simple nuggets. You know, 200 years of population growth, population bomb he presents in just four minutes without leaving any one information, 1 lakh 20,000 sets of data. He present in just four minutes. Can you imagine guys, that way? In a very simple way, what are the sustainable development goals? How we can set that? He teaches to even Bill Gates and he plans his investments accordingly. So that's the power of having data. This guy is worth of more than million dollars and billion dollars. It's because of this simplicity, right? You need to be observant, you need to document and you should not be biased. What happens if you're biased? Oh, let me focus on third world countries. Oh, let me focus on only poor people. You need to be a possibilities possibilist. That's what he terms a new term which is called possibilist. Neither optimal, neither pessimal. So something in between. So what is really there analytic and statistic is very important when you wanted to become a in between. And the fifth aspect is you need to be excellent at storytelling. Guys, what if you all have the data? There are thousands of researchers in the world, thousands of institutes who teach statistics and population and everything, right? There are methods, there are frameworks, there are linear regression. Like a lot of methods is there to do that. But how good you are in telling that story. Go and watch that video because you will know what I'm saying. So the thing is, let's say if your project is something like unattainable, okay, in next 10 years, how people are going to really have babies, People are going to have only one babies. People are not going to sometimes have babies at all. How are we really going to project that? Currently the survival rate of the babies is like let's say 60 percentage, 70 percentage. But it's going to decrease after 10 years. It's going to decrease like 30% after 10 years. And what are we really going to do? And the kind of products, what we are going to design and the kind of lifestyle, what we are going to change. I am going to be designing something like very cool, a product or a service which can make the people become happy and increase the baby survival rate. Because 30% of the global population amounts to more than 2.5 billion people. So if I wanted to save 2.5 billion people, I need to design this product. Now see, I have explained this problem statement with a story, with the pace, with the intention, in the mindset, with the what you call that energy of how you can solve it. See the way in which you tell the story matters. That is why even if you all have the data properly visualization all these things, if you don't know how to tell a story, it's not Going to have an impact. Let me give you one small tip, guys, okay? This is one of the best thing I've learned from the Hollywood storyteller. I forgot his name actually. You know what, when you're telling a story, because designer always needs to tell a story, whether he present his project or tell some basic concept to somebody. So story means you need to have a hero, okay? You need to have an end goal, right? And you need to have a hurdle which is like a villain or a circumstances or a situation. And you need to frame it in that way how your hero is going to cross that obstacle to reach that final goal. Final goal is not necessarily winning the villain. Sometimes it is losing also. But end of the day he transformed as a person, right? Have you seen Cars 2 film, animation film? Of course the hero will not win. But he would have transformed into something different and people have loved it. It's a world class, what you call award winning movie. Huge awards have come for that movie. But the villain, hero has lost. It's not about hero, villain or who lost or who won. It's about taking your hero of the story, okay? To cross that huddle to win that final goal. Remember these three things, guys. When you're telling a story, have a hero, have a final goal, set the hurdle. You can simulate that in your project, whatever is your project. You can simulate that with the data, statistics, information, storytelling, Persona, whatever. And then when you're able to stitch it in a proper way, you can concise two hours of story into one minute. You can concise three hours of story into just 2.5 minutes or 3 minutes. And people will able to connect with you fast. This is the power of storytelling. When you wanted to be a great researcher. Because when you're going into the field to ask people data, if you ask, hey, in your hospital there are hundreds of people dying every day. Do you know what is the reason for it? The moment you ask it, people will run away out of you. You should know how to ask. You should know how to tell your story. Hey, see if I'm given the chance. Hey, see, right now across India, 20,000 people are dying every hour. It's because of this problem. Can you help me reduce that? Because in your hospital there are huge amount of positive things happening. I came to know from my information. And there are doctors and nurses and people like you who are working in a ward boys. Okay, let's say if you're doing a research with ward boy, you're doing a huge work, you're keeping the hospital clean, you're doing a lot of things. Let me understand what are you really doing? Can I understand that? And when you're able to ask this question clearly, what happens is now you'll be happy to motivate and tell lot more information. Then you ask what are the exact reason for the death? Then you ask, See guys, you need to know how to tell the story properly to get information. This is the fifth element. The sixth element is very important guys, aspiration. See all these things so far is analytical. Whatever is said now, statistics, data, it says it's there in the Google YouTube ChatGPT. There are a lot of research methods available, right? But the sixth element will make you unique compared to anybody in the world having an aspiration. What people will think after 30 years, 40 years, 50 years? Let's say what kind of a baby survival will be there after 2050? Let me think about that and then let me project my data and visualize the storytelling accordingly. What will happen if you do that, guys? First of all, you will set and create your own future. You will set your own design and product and services for that. You will set to change the tide of this population or the audience or the investors or the business to your thinking, to your own visionary and make people see that vision. Why Steve Jobs became Steve Jobs, it's because of this. Steve Jobs doesn't know any bowers or Scandinavian design. Steve Jobs doesn't know any big kind of a complex coding. Steve Jobs doesn't know any kind of a big technology but he's able to tell the story properly with the proper aspiration. That is why he brought the best industries in the telecommunication AT&T& Bell and the best communication industry in music and the best Internet searches and brought it into one single device which people can use simply. And that's the power. Entire smartphone industry rippled because of that product launch. We know, we know that, right? Everybody talks about it. But the reason behind Steve Jobs iPhone launches aspiration. If you're able to have that aspiration, then you're going to become a world class researcher. Okay? With that being said, apply the six things. Guys, whatever I told you, thank you so much for staying tuning in. Please go and watch the video as an action point. Watch Hans Rosling's one hour documentary of BBC. That would be a great action taking for you because listening to this and just leaving for your day is not going to have any impact. Take action. Take action now if you wanted to change your life. Okay, thank you so much guys. Take care. Bye bye. All the best.
