When will I get a design job? I've been learning lot of programs, I've been seeing lot of videos, doing lot of case studies projects, applying and getting failed. And how do I really confirm that I'm qualified and I'm ready for a design job and when will I get it right? You always have this insider talk coming inside your thoughts when you're learning a process, when you're learning a skill. See, everybody is normally tuned towards a short term classification. Not until you reprogram yourself for a later and a greater benefit. This particular podcast is going to give you clarity what you can expect when you are in the field of creativity and design. And when can you expect that you are qualified for a job and when can you apply for the job? There are two aspects for it. Okay, so welcome guys. Now let's dive into the deep topic of this particular concept. Welcome guys, welcome, welcome. This is Jagdish. Thank you for staying tuning in with me in Design for Change podcast. Lot of people do a preparation for design. They join courses, they join design schools, they join what do you call some online programs, they join some physical programs also and then they take up some boot camps, they take some mentorship, everything, right? But end of the day, if that is not getting converted as a result, what happens? You get a frustration. You get, when I'm going to get the job, am I really qualified? So I'll tell you, there are three ways you can check whether you're really qualified or not, guys. Okay, so the first way you can check is make sure you're having at least one or two good projects in your work. Okay, let's say the project need not have to be always a project related to product design or UI UX design or any kind of a thing. It can be as good as keeping your good work in your portfolio, maybe in your earlier work, whatever you have. Let's say if you're good in sketching, if you're good in some kind of a craft, if you're good in some style of art or something, you can, you can put it like that as a work so that people should understand you have that particular skill. Okay? That's where you can check yourself, okay, I'm really qualified to apply for a job. The second thing is you need to just talk to five or 10 people in the industry who are working and ask them the feedback, hey, am I really qualified for this job? Am I really getting somewhere close to what is expectation in the industry? You can get confirmation from others. That's why I'm Asking you to talk to 10 people, okay? Not one people so that you'll be biased. The third way is you can actually go and check some of the job descriptions. What is given in the LinkedIn. Okay? In the glass doors, monsters, whatever the job portal is there, please check that again. There is a caution to it. Do not get overwhelmed by that. Okay? Just understand if they are asking, hey, you need to do product research. You need to understand and make wireframes and concepts. Hey, you need to understand what you call Persona mapping and creation. Don't go to YouTube and learn taktuktuk personal mapping and creation. Try understanding what is this job description going to arrive at the end. See, this is where you check yourself whether you are qualified or not. It's not like you are seeing some topic here and there. Hey, they have asked for coding. Let me learn coding. It's not at all required. Hey, they asked for product sketching. Let me, let me do sketching. It's not at all required. Sometimes it is required based on the job. So don't be in that hurry very state and expect some kind of a shorter gratification. This thing will pull you guys to make wrong decisions and get a hurry. Berry. I'll tell you if you're not thinking about these three factors like one is first you have to have one or two good projects. Second is you need to task at least 10 different people in industry who are having that kind of a clarity in the design. And third is you need to check the job descriptions, read one or two times properly and make sure you have that skills or not. Even if you don't have that skill. Make a time plan and a roadmap to develop that skill. Simple, right? If you're qualified, you can apply. If you're not qualified, you have to come back, you have to prepare that right? And then work hard and get the results. See, this is how you can check it. I'll tell you in between a story before going into the next section of this podcast and say it's a real time experiment. It's not a story which is called a candy candy experiment, which was done in University of Chicago. This is done for a larger audience actually. So what they gave us for the people, for the kids who are in the age of three to five, I'm not exactly sure three to five. They gave them the candy to eat it. Okay. The one condition they told to that kids is if you eat this candy now, yeah, you can eat it, no problem. Or if you keep this candy for little longer time, like let's say for one hour or two hour or maybe one day, we will give you another candy, okay? But you can keep it. So they asked the children to decide on themselves and they observed it. You know what 80 percentage of the kids they have exactly consumed the chocolate because they wanted to eat it. Once they saw the chocolate, they are very happy they wanted to consume it. They want to say, once we get the salary, we need to spend it, we need to put here and there. All the money will be gone in the day one, day two, right? EMIs and everything. So that's a typical situation. So once we get the money, we throw here and there. This, that, that is called short term gratification. People who are having a long term gratification, they did not consume it. They know if they keep this chocolate for a waiting period of longer time, they'll get one more candy. See, this is the exact mindset which you need to install when you're learning the process. When you're doing a project in design, you will be definitely frustrated, guys. You'll be like completely feeling lost. You'll be like, hey, who am I getting validation from? Whether this project is correct or not? All this frustration will definitely come. How do I measure myself? Whether my skill is in the level of 1 to 10, where am I really standing and how will I know that industry's expectation and my skills really does match? Should I give some interview trials and come to know? So all these frustration and questions will come, guys, but remember, keep going, keep going until you reach your point where you have almost cracked all the aspects in your own way of thinking. Let's say you have designed yourself as a designer, right? If I learn this, this, this, then I'm called a designer. You learn sketching, you learn some wireframes, you learn some prototypes, you learn some 3D modeling and rendering, you become product designer. Then that's what people always think by seeing some Behance and Pinterest profile and all right, yeah, it's okay. At least you complete that and ask this question. People in between itself, they wanted a job in between itself, that kind of short term gratification thinking hits you. So the main point is after these kids are analyzed, 20 years after this experiment, okay, so initially they have did it in the 3 year or 5 age and then they later check them after 20 or 25 age. People who have waited for this long term gratification, the kids who did not take the chocolates, they were more successful in their career, they were more wealthier, they were more happier, they were More healthier. They have a very personal relationships. Good people. The kids who took the short term gratification, they were literally broke or not having a proper career or mediocre life or are still stumbling to become successful. So this is a real time long experiment which was done. Guys, what does it really say? You have to wait for the long term gratification, putting continuous effort. Then and only you will be able to get a clarity, right? If you have that long term gratification, allow yourself to make a timeline and prepare it. That is why it's good to have an accountability partner and a mentor to guide you. A group kind of a school, college is not largely helping this aspect. Guys, to be very honest, it has not happened previously. Okay? And the second aspect is if somebody is guiding you properly and if you are also accountable for them, then you tend to relieve your frustration because you will know that person also went through this frustration. Then you will know, okay, this person took two years for studying design and doing it. I am just thinking for three months, okay fine, psychologically you will feel happy. Third is this person gives you validation so that you will know, hey, I am right now good in research. I have to improve my screen building skills. I have to improve my 3D modeling skills. Let me go and learn. See that kind of a validation and clarity will come and you will measure your yourself, where you are in skill and then you will know how you're ready for the industry. See, I've told you five important aspect. Losing frustration, losing the cost effort and the timeline. And getting validation from your mentor and the proper accountability partner. Measuring your skill level and matching with the industry standard. See, if you go through this process only guys, you will be qualified to apply a job or interview or anything in between. If you go here and there, jump here and there, what will happen is your frustration will become high. Your cousins will start earning more money than you. Your friends will start earning more money than you. Your batchmates in school, they are getting now 50,000. I am still not joined any job. I am just studying here and there. Some Figma, some Photoshop, some Adobe xd, this, that. Hey, I'm studying product design. I'm not getting all these confusions and mindset everybody used to have. Even they build their own pressure. Even parents or friends not telling anything. Also they build their own pressure. Hey, I have not got any job. My parents are staring at me. Leave all this BS guys. All these things. Whatever I told you for the last one minute is not going to add any value for you. Just go through the long term gratification process and then choose a good person or an accountability or a mentor to help you to come out of all these things. To be very honest, guys, there are two mentors who has changed my life when I studied in nid, okay, Apart from college. They have really changed my perspective. They've really beat me, beat me literally. Not by hitting. It's like hitting my thoughts, hitting my perspective, hitting my way of thinking and how do I approach. And that rewiring really happened once. When I go through that frustration and the long term gratification, see, it took two and a half years for me to go and get a good job. Even an internship. Now people are expecting results in nine months, six months, three months. People are even expecting result in 60 days. You have to put that effort, then expectation will become reality, right? We need to be qualified to expert. There is nothing wrong in expecting. So this is the exact science behind it, guys. Everybody goes to that frustration. That's the simple thing. Everybody goes to the time, effort, process, resource, no validation, getting lost, fear. But if you have that proper clarity and work with somebody, either either a mentor or a good program or something, you will get that journey very, very smooth and clear.
