A designer explains why narrowing your focus beats being a generalist. Specificity leads to higher rates, better work, and real innovation. Seven concrete steps show how to pick your niche and own it.
Being specific is terrific. Particularly for a designer who normally gets lost in the field of abstractness because of the commonality which is being called in design. Design is very abstractive, can't understand so why it is very important for a designer to be very specific. Because my mentor always says specific is terrific and riches lies in the niches, the micro niches. The moment when you find your niche and your micro niche, your entire way in which you present your concepts and you develop a product will definitely I'll tell you with some case studies and example why being specific is terrific is important for designers. Let's jump in. In design community this is not prevalently talked upon. Okay, so why it is very important to understand the specificity. Let me tell you guys, lot of years we've been using Google search. Right now the death of Google has happened because of ChatGPT. What is the difference? The only difference is CHAT GPT gives you a very specific answer. But Google gives you a very generic answer which you will have to do another research, another intermediate study, cross pollinate or maybe find the interference and then you have to take a decision. But chat GPT's machine learning model has been built in a way that it is very specifically understanding your requirements. The based on the prompt, what you give, the answers are coming. So people who are really making a specific products, specific services are the biggest billionaires in the world. The biggest riches lies in your micro niches, not in your niches. Okay, so product design might be a niche, but in that product design what exactly you wanted to really focus on. That is a very, very first thing which you will have to understand. What is specific is terrific. Okay, the second is the big billionaires focus on the biggest problems of the people and how market is really lagging in that. Okay, they'll focus on a very single thing. It could be a B2B product, business to business. It could be a customer, it could be a business to customer, B2C product, it could be anything. Guys, if you are really closely looking at the patterns of what people are lacking, what market needs, and if you fulfill that using your specific products and solutions, you're going to become lot of big billionaire out of this. Okay? So you can provide a solution as a designer or you can do a business out of the product and service what you're offering, lot of billionaires have become billionaires is because of that one reason. Okay, third example I'll give you guys. Do you think a general doctor is paid more for a consultation or a neurosurgeon is paid More. Think about it, why neurosurgeons are paid more. It's like at least 10 times more the neurosurgeons are paid. Let's say if you're giving 200 rupees for a general doctor, definitely your neurosurgeon charges minimum of thousand to two thousand rupees. For sure. Because the more specific they are, the better skillful and efficient they will be able to solve your problem. People, who are you who are telling, hey, I can help people do weight loss. Hey, I can help people to crack exams. No, guys, these people are old people, okay? The trend now is. It's not about trend, it's being more specific. Like let's say, if I'm saying I have a method of weight loss using Paleo diet, I have a method of weight loss using nutritional diet, I have a method of weight loss using yoga, I have a method of losing weight through only aerobic exercises. So see guys, the more specific you are, the better audiences and Personas and target market you can able to find out. Same like that. If you are getting a product or a service from your customer, definitely you have to make sure your customer is having a very specific target market Persona and a particular solution to offer. If your customer is not having many times they will not have. Okay, it's your responsibility of a designer to really make sure how specific you wanted to target a different ethnographic group, a specific Persona, a specific region, a specific problem, a specific solution which you have to offer. You know what, guys, if you do it like that, you will be paid more like a neurosurgeon and more. Okay, if you do a generic design, you're not going to live anywhere, guys, because the trend has completely changed. The fourth important point is you will have huge vacancies, guys, if you are very specific, okay? See? Huge in the sense. What I'll tell you is, of course the generic field has lot of vacancies. Specific field. Like let's say if you are a behavioral oriented product designer who design products for like let's say an international market for us, okay, you're a behavioral product designer, you design product for people's behavior, okay? So let's understand in that way, the more specific you are, the better you will be able to charge for the work what you're doing. And the value proposition will also be proportionately high. Okay? But if you are someone who is generally making some, hey, I'll make laptop, hey, I'll just design some laptop, you will not be able to earn that much or you will not be able to convince your customer or your client to charge that much. That's a big problem. Problem. You have to understand this. The fifth important thing is my mentor, Siddharth Rajshekhar. So he said the more specific you are, the better you will become in that skill. Because he only said that to me. Specific is terrific. And even to record courses, I've learned from him how specific you need to be. You know what? My program lasts every day 90 minutes. But I teach only for 15 minutes. The concepts, rest of the thing. I give activities and watch students and help and mentor and guide them. In that 15 minutes I only make it into chunks of few, few snippets and points. Which is more specific? Because nobody likes fluff or stories or theory here, right? So if you join my mentorship program, you will know it. I have a classes at 5:30-7. Nobody sleeps there, nobody takes absence unless until if it's damn urgent. Everybody has come to the morning classes and the attendance is 85 to 92%. It's because of the specificity what I bring into the syllabus and the way in which I teach in a more, more relatable way then and only you can able to cover wide audience. Okay? The sixth important thing is you will go much deeper, guys, in your design if you are very expertise in that particular specific area. Now your idea will be novel, very innovative and nobody can touch you. That's why I told you, you will be paid more and you will have a much more excellent conversion rates of your customer. Okay? The seventh important thing is your success stories will be very, very high. See guys, your customer needs to be very happy and your customer needs to really tell another customer to bring you more products, more services, more, more designs, right? So if you are very specific, only you will be able to solve their problem. Generic or outdated? Guys, and let me tell you one more thing, okay? If you're really having read about lot of research journals and if you have found out like how do I really solve problems, how do I really get into a model mode of solving some problem and helping it out, you will finally find out there are only six areas in the whole of a design field, okay? Like let's say the first field is medical. It is very vital to understand this case. Okay? So there are only six fields which is available in order to find a problem and specifically solve it. The first is medical, okay? The second is carrier, which is like people college this thing. And then you wanted to help people grow in their career. This, that and all, okay? The third is creativity which is a design and creativity. The fourth is relationship and happiness, okay? And the fifth important element is building businesses. Okay? Building businesses. The sixth important thing is wealth management, let's say money management people. So if you take any problem in the world, it will either come into this six area for sure. Maybe it will be directly related or indirectly related from here. Like let's say if you want to solve a problem of medical, you want to solve a problem of career or relationship or business or wealth or career or creativity, anything, just take one problem. Like let's say if you're solving a problem of creativity, okay? So your particular audience is a kids who are from age of 5 to 13, okay? They are having some creativity problem. They are not able to design. They are not able to understand certain classes or teachings. Like let us say if you are target market is having some slow growth in brain, okay? They wanted to have an accelerated learning. Then you choose a method how you wanted to really help them learn faster. See, now your target market is clear and your specific audience is also clear 5 to 13. And your specific problem is solving and improving the brain acceleration learning method. And you can even, you can even tell that I wanted to solve only problem in South India, in Chennai, in this area, for this kids, for this school, for, for lower segment, for higher segment, for higher incoming segment, or for lower income segment or for rural people, urban people. The more specific you go, guys, you'll be able to solve the problem much more better than people who tell, hey, I'll solve a problem and then you make a generic solution. That's the big reason lot of politicians and lot of policies which has been made is not coming exactly to the people the way which the politician wants, right? We cannot blame every time politicians, government, this, that and all. It's all interconnected. And the system design thinking is very much important to understand the interrelatedness of that. So this is not our topic, guys, okay? Our topic is to understand. The more specific we go, the better we will be in design. The more specific you choose a problem statement to solve your customer, the better you will have a solution. The more specific you address a particular market, ethnographic segment or a product or service or a gap. Your product and service will be celebrated like anything, guys. And you know what? The more specific you go, sometimes you will find some hidden patterns which people may think that this is not a problem, but you will find, okay, people are indirectly suffering in it. And I can help through my solution. See, that kind of innovation will only come when you think about it, okay? I hope you learned lot of things from this podcast, so be specific. And that is really terrific, guys. Thank you so much. Take care. We'll see you in another episode.
