A designer shares 10 strategies for job applications that actually work. Research the company deeply, build a portfolio that shows your process not just the final work, and practice behavioral interview questions with specific examples from your past projects.
Making a standout job application is one of the very, very crucial thing. Normally people do what majority of the market size really does and what normally a designer who is starting up their career they do and and normally they really cope up the strategies. What is available In Google chat, GPT this, that LinkedIn. Right. Let me tell you, I'm going to be suggesting you 10 different unique methods which you would have not heard or maybe you could have heard, but not knowing how exactly to implement this. And make sure your 10 strategies is going to give you a standout job application in your job selection criteria. Okay, so take a lot of notes. This is going to be a wonderful podcast. Particularly if you are going for a job interviews or if you are looking for any kind of design tasks and starting up your career and stepping up into a designer. This is a very, very essential element. Okay. Yes. Foreign. Let's first discuss the very first element when it comes to job application. First of all you need to understand the company and their role. Let me tell you guys, according to a survey by Glassdoors 77 percentage of the hiring managers consider candidates knowledge about the company as a very critical factor. You will be fighting in making your portfolio, resume, projects, communication skills, leave everything guys company really expects you to know about themselves very clearly. It's a very very unique thing which nobody tells you. Normally if you understand the company and its role definitely guys you will have more understanding about how you wanted to really pitch them. You have to know their values, their projects, their design philosophy and tailor your applications and your projects and your resume and your portfolio accordingly so that to match them. That's why 77 percentage of the hiring managers do consider that. Okay, is the very first point. Second important point is craft a very impactful resume once. If you understand then you can go and work on your resume. See guys, on an average recruiters really spends only average of 7 per 7 seconds reviewing resume. There is a source called eye tracking study by the ladders. You can go and check that even seven seconds is really really I would say it's average figure. But to be on a higher side, max to max 30 seconds guys people do give that much time only so very clear a very concise and visually appealing resume. Because if you are a designer you have to show that when people are giving a first glance at your resume, highlight your key skills, achievements and relevant experience whatever you want to show in your work. A lot of people what they do is they do just randomly whatever they feel like doing in a resume. Understand your company, your role, your skill Set your strength, align your resume accordingly and make sure it should be very eye catchy. You can download a lot of templates from Pinterest Behance and check. But first I would say do the company research, understand how you want to express your style and nature and then go for online sources. Okay, this is the second thing. The third important thing is then work on an impressive portfolio. Once you have the portfolio, let me tell you guys, a lot of people, more than 38% of the hiring managers want to see a very good portfolio demonstrating your candidate skill set. It's a stat by Adobe. So showcase a diverse skill set, particularly if you're a fresher. I would suggest you show variety of projects showcasing your sketching skills, your color skills, your composition skills, your research skills, your ideation skills, your visualization skills, your rendering skills and then your screen building skills. All these things and documentation skills. If you are an experienced designer, showcase a specific skill for your role. Do not show everything. Then it becomes a kitchen. So be sure on what you wanted to play based on your fresher or your experienced guy. And the best point is show what problem you really solved before and after. Then and only they will feel the importance in that particular project. Okay. The fourth important thing is create a very good cover letter. Lot of people don't know what is mean by cover letter, guys. A study by Job White found that 26% of the recruiters consider a well written cover letter as most important part of application. In India it's really less guys, let me tell you. But if you really have a cover letter showcasing why you wanted to really apply for that role and how you're fit and writing about a small descriptive story. This engages the people a lot rather than your portfolio and resume. So please craft a very good personalized cv. Guys. Don't do a cover letter common for every industry and send across copy paste. Copy paste? No. Based on your job experience, their requirements, the company and your personality, how you can match them, genuinely write it. I'll tell you guys, if you genuinely write a cover letter, sometimes you will feel that industry is not suitable for you. You don't have to spend time wasting for application itself because that is not really aligning with your own interest. And their interest is rare, their requirement is different. So that's why it's important. If you write a cover letter, it's good for you as well as a person. Okay. The fifth important element I would say is demonstrate your soft skills. See guys, LinkedIn reports that 57% of the leaders say soft skills are More important than the design hard skills rather knowing lot of tools. Please understand how you want to really talk to people manage your team. Soft skills is really really important. Guys. If you want really a lot of money and a salary and a career growth, soft skills has that. Soft skills has a lot of money. Hard skills has relatively lesser. It's definitely true. So work on your people management skills. Work on your communication skills, work on your attitude and behavior. I've recorded a podcast of 10 different soft skills what a designer needs to learn in one of my earlier episodes. You can listen out that twice and take action for it. Ok? And the thing is you need to collaboratively work with lot of people and show that collaborativeness in your project because people really check that team effort or your collaborative nature to really hire you as a designer, even as a fresher. Okay? The sixth important element is create a personal brand. See guys, nobody really talks about it. 70% of the employers use social media to screen your candidates for their hiring process. It's a report by Career Builder. So establish a very consistent online presence. It reflects your personality style. Because if you are designer, you should definitely have some good logo or a good post or a good graphic design works or something which is in your design Portfolio or your LinkedIn page or your Facebook page, or your Instagram page or your blog or anything. I would suggest writing a good blog is important and having a very good LinkedIn page is important. Having a very good logo is important guys. That much if you have it is really good. Additionally if you have podcast, if you have YouTube channel to just post some of your major one or two videos to just show your digital presence that will be better online presence. Because I told you 70% of the industries employees really look for a social media presence. Because if you are a designer, you should be able to catch up the day and age trend. What is going on? You should not be in a complete isolated way. Earlier I used to be also like that. But right now I have a digital presence and hundred of my episodes are there in Apple podcast and Spotify and other platforms. So I'm also making a very great digital presence through this, okay? Because the moment when somebody sees it, they'll really value in a different way. The seventh important strategy is network and attend a lot of industry events. We have discussed about it a lot in our previous podcast. But let me tell you, U.S. bureau of Labor Statistics states that 70% of the jobs are found through networking. That is why platforms like LinkedIn is very important. Apart from this guys, you can attend conference Meetings connect with professionals. Expand your network every single day. Have one or two people interacted with you every single day to really cope up with them and interact with them and continuously get to know what's happening in the industry. Seek internships and freelance opportunities. That is the eighth important thing. A Statistics by NACE 60% of the paid internship convert as full time job offer. Do not accept for free internship Guys definitely seek a very good internship which is paid. When you have a paid internship, the accountability is more. When I say it, it really means a lot because I have really tested. I mean I. I've understood with lot of people. I can see the pattern. People who do really join free. I mean internship with free they are not really hired properly. People who are paid, they definitely get a serious thing and they get hired and converted as a full time. A week before two of my students got selected in a job converting from internship to a full time. So magic will happen. So you will gain a lot of practical experience through internships and you can get a good freelancing projects so that what happens is you will get to know what is really happening in the industry by at least starting up with something like this rather than waiting for a full time job directly which will definitely take time to get this because a lot of times design what you call design school students were hired fast compared to people who are learning from online and other platforms. For them I would really suggest have a very good internship opportunity. Seek turn start your freelancing work anything, whatever you can to showcase and get started. The ninth important thing is continuous learning and skill development. A survey by LinkedIn found that 94% of the employees stay at the company with if invested in career development. See, I think I've already told you this stat. So showcase your learning commitment. Show that lifelong learning triple L attitude. I used to tell my students triple L always have a lifelong learning attitude and mention some relevant courses and materials and certification which you got and showcase even your self initiated projects. It need not have to be real time. So if people see that, they'll see that you are continuously learning and then you're really skillful and then you're definitely interested and enthusiastic to work. So that is a major intention people really check on which will make your portfolio and your resume and your application unique. The tenth and the last important thing. You will really not believe this. Guys. Prepare for behavioral kind of sessions. Interview is fine. Anything which is interview, pre interview. All these things are okay guys. But please try to work on your behavioral knowledge how you are as a Person and personality. According to a survey by Workopolis, 60% of the interviewers make a decision about a candidate within first few minutes. See guys understand this. So people really understand how you behave, how you talk, how you respond, how you solve a problem, how you work team wise, how you adapt, how you really react for a particular problem. That's why they give design task, right? Design tasks are normally asked you to solve in half an hour, one day or maybe sometimes it's two days. Sometimes people give you half an hour on the spot to solve. So they wanted to really check your behavioral skills. They don't want to check your design skills any which way. You're going to learn there and do a design project, right? So understand this important aspect. Guys, let me just recap whatever we've discussed. So first understand the company and their role. Create a very good tailor made resume for that and then build a very good portfolio. And the fourth is create a very good cover letter. And fifth is demonstrate your soft skills in a very, very very mandatory way. You can even write a heading in your resume and mention your soft skills. If you don't have, you can develop this. Guys, choose a good mentor, choose a good accountability partner and take a help of them and build them. Create a personal brand using online presence. Create a logo, create a good page or a YouTube channel or a podcast or a medium or Instagram Facebook. Create any account and start posting some good content. Network with good people and attend some industry events. Live and seek internships. Freelancing opportunity to start up your career continuously learning and attitude should be shown. And 10th is prepare for a behavioral interview. If you do all these things step wise guys, without leaving any, I'm sure in next 30 days you will definitely crack one or two interviews. You can attend as much as possible like 10 to 15 applications you can put out of which four or five they will give you selection. And out of five you can attend two or three interviews. You can get hired this one. So 30 days is a time frame wise to implement everything whatever I said provided if you have a little design knowledge and if you are a fresher, please first work on a very good project, learn design skills and then you can come back to this actionable points of this podcast so that from today if you start application of your job in 30 days you will see results. Guys, I am definitely assuring you because I have worked with my students and I made them get results. Some of my students who implemented this model and method along with this additional things are also there which I'll be teaching you inside my mentorship program through which they have really got results in 15 days, in 20 days, in one month, in 45 days, some of the students have magically got the results and double their salary and even 2.5x they've got in less than 45 days of my mentorship program. So that is the kind of results is possible guys. Okay, so thank you so much guys for attending for listening to this podcast. I hope it would have given you a great value. Give me a best star rating in Spotify and Apple. And if you find this is really useful, please recommend to other friends who might be really interested in learning design and knowing about different pain points in design career.
