A designer explains why mindset beats skillset in creative careers, using the 80/20 Pareto principle. The talk covers growth mindset, neuroplasticity, and resilience, with practical steps to build the mental foundation that drives design success.
Welcome to this Design for Change. Thank you for staying tuning in with me. I'm excited to share that through this podcast we are really touching thousands and thousands of designers across the world in over 20 countries. I'm really happy to share that there are a lot of design entrepreneurs and startups who are listening to this podcast and there has been an overwhelming response. Through this particular podcast, we are really redefining the way in which we learn design. So. So there is nothing called it's not learnable. So any skill in design is learnable and everybody can really design their own way of solving the problem and they can make a big living out of it. It not only makes you as a person to live or to make a freelance or to earn some money, it also helps you to create a very massive impact on it. Okay, so so far we've been recording a lot of pain points and addressing some of the issues which is what the design communities is facing. And today I'm going to be telling you very important topic always the world works on 80, 20 Pareto rule, right? 80 percentage mindset, 20 percentage skill set. If you're agreeing, if you're not disagreeing, after this podcast you will get a clarity whether to do it or not. Take a lot of notes. I'm going to be justifying this with some scientific background and resources as well. So it is very vital to understand that the universe works in Pareto principle, right? 80, 20, that's what Pareto has really formulated it. So 80% of the success comes from the key. 20 percentage actions, what people take. That's what is the major thing of it. So mindset is 80 percentage and skill set is 20 percentage. Let me give you why mindset is important. See researcher Carol Dweck shows that believing your abilities can grow, like let's say a growth mindset leads to a greater effort, perseverance, a greater learning compared to a fixed mindset. Person who believe intelligence is static, definitely it works. And there is a study in neuroplasticity which says this brain is constantly rewiring itself through a continuous experience and thoughts. For a positive mindset can really make literally the shape of your brain for success. So it programs automatically when you have the mindset improve. So that is why it is very good to nurture your mindset before improving any of your skill set. I mean, that's what I usually tell my students in my community, because skills can be learnt, but mindset cannot be learned that easily. It takes a little time. Okay. And resilience. See a strong mindset really improves your resilience in face of challenges. Like let's say if you have a problem, very crucially you're approaching any creative exploration, you will overcome the design hurdles very easily and improves and it definitely improves your motivation and confidence. So mindset is very essential when you take risk, when you're iterating, when you're pushing your creative boundaries aside. So this is why mindset really matters. The growth mindset, the neuroplasticity of your brain improves the resilience and the motivation. So what is really, what is it to do with creative designers? Let me tell you guys, it improves your empathy and user centric design approach in a different way. A growth mindset always tends to see you through your different perspective of your user. It understands their needs, behaviors leading to a creative solution which is comprehending much larger population than narrowing down. It helps you face more challenges, particularly if you are using the opportunity for learning and growing as a innovative designer. It helps you experiment a lot of things in design. See guys, mindset is everything. And I used to prove to my students through hundreds of case studies whom I've really guided earlier and how people have really learned from that particular thing, which is mindset is Most, most important 80% of the time rather than 20% of the skill set. Okay, so normally what happens is people put the skills first. That's not how it should be. Okay, so talking mindset, mindset will really improve 80%. No, I have to do some action in the skill set, right? That's true guys, but without tuning this properly, if you start doing skill set, what happens is you will either leave the field quickly or you will diminish a little, or you will not have the motivation to carry through it in the career and you will not learn the skill properly and you will not even fit there properly and you will not have a big goal where you wanted to reach. You will be doing some substandard work. You will be doing something which you really thought maybe you have to do this way, but you are compromising yourself. You will be living a normal substandard life which you are not intended to do. You might be having a very different goal. Particularly if you improve your growth mindset. You will go into that level of achievement and you will see much more larger picture. That is why it is very important for a designer to improve that perspective and it improves your collaboration and effective feedback. Because positive mindset opens lot of people learn from a richer learning experience. Let me tell you guys scientifically. Carol Dweck research found that growth mindset and its impact on academic achievement is profound. In business, success in athletics and sports, performance in academic, in everything. It's really, really successful. So you can read about Coral Dweck's research. There are a lot of good YouTube videos you can watch. Studies on neuroplasticity demonstrates the brain ability to change. I already told you so. Research also proves that resilience is definitely improved and people who really practice this growth mindset achieve their goals faster. You know what, some of the prominent designers like Tim Brown in the book Design Thinking is as much about mindset as it is about the methods. So he himself quoted that if you're reading the book Change by Design by Tim Brown, you can read that, okay? He's a CEO of ideo. So design thinking is as much about mindset as it is about methods. David Kelly, Stanford Design School founder, you know what? He's the biggest predictor of design success is not talent, but curiosity and optimism. This is mindset. So he says the biggest predictor of design success is not talent, it's not skill, it's curiosity and the optimism and the growth mindset. What you show. And Breen Brown, a vulnerability researcher, shows vulnerability, courage and wholeheartedness are the path to innovation and design. All these things are mindset related things. Guys, let me tell you, you need to practice these things. I'll give you five practical steps. Practice gratitude. Focus on positive aspects of your design journey and celebrate your small wins and successes in your life. Challenge your negative thoughts, reframe the self doubt and create that. Change that opportunity into a learning curve and even be gratitude for that. I've recorded a separate podcast on gratitude. You can learn that. Always ask feedback. Actively ask for feedback from the users, from your colleagues, from your office, from your client, from your customers. And then improve, learn, improve, learn, improve. Do it relentlessly and visualize your success. Imagine yourself achieving your design goals to boost motivation and confidence and practice mindfulness every single day. Calm yourself and meditate or do whatever mindfulness practice at least for 30 to 40 minutes which can help you manage your stress and it enhances your creativity. Let me repeat you this action steps guys. Because if you don't know how to practice mindfulness or your growth mindset to be improved, you will not be able to do it right. You'll be just listening to like a podcast. So practice gratitude, challenge your negative thoughts and reframe it. Ask a person for feedback and visualize your success and practice mindfulness consistently. And let me tell you guys, there is a book called Mindset by Carol Dweck. It's a very good book. Designing for Growth. It's another book Designing for Growth by Jean Litqua and Tim Brown. I have not read this book but you can try it out. It's suggested that it's a good book material and you can go to ideou website and standardD School and DesignThinkers Academy. I'll be pasting that hyperlink also you can check it out and there is an application called Headspace. There's a beautiful application called Calm. It's. It's wonderful. And there is an application called Insight Timer. You know what, these are all the things which will help you learn mindful growth and mindset growth as a person. How it helps you grow in your career in larger level. Because if you don't know the resources you will be stumbling upon. Okay, so remember one thing guys. Mind mindset plays a very very crucial role and do not diminish it. For the importance of skill development, aim at a balanced approach. Don't completely forget the skill. Also have a balanced approach where a positive mindset really fuels your skills and your skills again fuels your mindset. It's all vice versa. So by incorporating this you will find a effective improvement in your design career. Okay, I hope this podcast is really useful for you. Thank you for subscribing me and what do you call.
