5 painful truths that will kick you into action (If you're stuck in a rut)

James Lim lays out five reasons you're stuck: social media addiction, watching motivation videos instead of acting, over-planning, hiding behind busy-ness, and complaining without taking responsibility. He recommends deleting apps, setting an action-before-consumption rule, and confronting what you're actually afraid of.

Here are five increasingly painful truths that we all sometimes need to hear to give us a kick. We need to start taking action right now. They will get more harsh as we go along, so brace yourself. Truth 1 your social media addiction will get worse. What you don't realize is this continuous scrolling becomes a deeply ingrained habit. Constantly, constantly scrolling. And it's really difficult to get out of as it seeps into your unconscious. And if you think about it, it leaves you feeling pretty empty inside. You're just like a zombie just watching the same videos. It can be a pretty sad existence. Now we need to break the cycle. This totally ruined my productivity and my goals. When I'd say things like just one more video. Very, very common. You must find a way to pull away. Do what you need to do now. I do a lot of work with clients to get them off of their phones because it ruins. Just like me, it ruins how much progress you can make towards your goals. Delete the apps. Do what you need to do. Now. I've got some restriction apps on my phone or I've deleted lots of apps. There's a good app screenshot here called One Sec. I also use Rescue Time on my desktop. That's a really good one too. Detox yourself. You need to commit here without any excuses. It's very difficult. I've taken quite a few people through detoxes and you can see how difficult it is. Moderation is hard. When we've tried to moderate it, it doesn't work as well as you might think. We usually find to take yourself away from it completely is usually easier to start with and then you can work on moderation. Truth two, successful people are not constantly watching motivation and productivity videos. I know you really want to watch these videos to get inspired and feel motivated, but how often does it result in you taking action? People who are working on their goals, they're not watching these videos non stop for 10, 12 hours a day like you are. They're doing the work now. I used to spend hours consuming. It felt good. So I was one of these people for sure and I definitely added a lot to the view. Count on a lot of these videos and I'm sure you recognize these people if you're in this camp. The problem was I knew I wasn't making any tangible progress and that is the metric that matters, not how many tools and concepts you have in your head about how to be productive. It's what are you actually getting down on paper? What you can do around it is to define a simple rule to Limit your consumption. I used to do this thing which is where you watch a video, you must take action before watching another. So if you watch a productivity video, do something after that video. Then I also created a creation log so I could only report in there. It was a journal of creation. I could only write in there what I had actually done toward my goal. This is something I do a lot with clients and they would sometimes want to write things about the research that they've done about what tools to use. It doesn't count. Truth 3 excessive planning and research is not doing the work. I remember when I was trying to create content, I got obsessed with looking at how to create content, how to shoot videos, what the best viral hooks and all of this stuff. And I would watch hours and hours and hours of it. Totally stuck in research mode. You need to get out of that. That was a total delusion for me. I only needed to watch a handful of videos and that's enough. You do need to watch the content, but you don't need to overdo it. One of the problems I had was I didn't actually define what the action was. So I thought watching the videos, I was the action. But you can consume tens of hours watching how to do stuff and not actually implementing it. You must break that cycle. Truth 4 Being busy is a convenient excuse to avoid doing the things you're afraid of. How many times have you found yourself saying you're busy to get out of doing what you know you need to do? Now, this is a tricky one because being busy, especially if you're working or or something, it can feel uncomfortable and there's a pain there. So sometimes you feel like you're experiencing a pain and so surely that is what you should be doing and you are pushing into discomfort. The difference is it's a familiar pain. It's not the wrong type of pain you're looking for. And that's a bit of a trap. You need to confront the fear that is stopping you from reaching your goals. Now, for me, it was creating content. I was terrified of that. And I kept making excuses about starting to the point where it lasted years over over a decade even. And I'd use my 9 to 5 job as an excuse. I still remember saying how busy I was when I was working that job to not work on my other projects and businesses. Only when I really dug deep did I realize why I was doing and I was just deluding myself. Identify what you are avoiding and why and then focus on the high impact tasks. Okay. Truth 5 no one wants to hear you complain about your problems and do nothing about it. This is what you look like when you're complaining complaining about your situation. It drains you. You can feel it how negative that energy is and it becomes a cycle. Just constant complaining about your situation. This is the one that hit me quite hard. It also becomes your identity and how people know you. I used to do this. I would complain all the time to people and not do anything because I was too scared about changing anything. I didn't realize I was so obsessed with complaining about things and it wasn't until someone called me out on it on how much of a downer it was to constantly hear me talk about it and not actually do anything about it. Take responsibility and be proactive and you can seek help if you need but take the responsibility and make a move right? That is all for this video. See you in the next one.
