James Lim explains why checking your phone feels like pulling a slot machine lever. Notifications, TikTok swipes, email checks, Facebook scrolls, and Tinder swipes all trigger the same reward-seeking loop that keeps you hooked.

Five ways your phone feels like playing on a slot machine 1. When we check our phone, we're playing a slot machine to see what new notifications we've got. 2. When we swipe on TikTok, we're playing a slot machine to see what new video comes up next. 3. When we check our email, we're seeing whether we've been rewarded with something of interest or when you scroll through Facebook, you're hoping for a hit of new information. 5. When you swipe on a person on Tinder, you're seeing whether you won a match.
