9 questions you NEED to ask yourself to hit your goals

James Lim walks through nine questions to build goals that actually stick. The core idea: plan for when motivation drops, not just when it's high. Know your fallback strategy, how you'll handle distractions, and what worked last time you tried.

You're probably intending to tackle the new year with the same go hard mentality you have every year, like sprinting off the line in a marathon. You'll eventually burn out, but deep down you already know this is going to happen. So the question is, why are you continuing to do it? Well, the reality is this is the only approach you really know. And now I've coached hundreds of people who have previously failed with their goals. And here are nine simple questions they all struggled to answer when we first spoke. When they were eventually able to answer these questions, they were able to hit their goals. They so hopefully this might be able to help you prepare. Number one, what exactly does your plan tell you to do when your motivation falls off a cliff? Because it will. Two, what actions do you take to accommodate this shift in mindset? So what we're saying here is when this happens, how are you going to respond to it? What does it say to do when you hit the inevitable wall of self doubt, burnout and boredom? So these things are very likely to happen at some point. What does your plan tell you to do? Four, what is your self writing mechanism to get you back on track when you fall off? Number five, what do you do when you have a new opportunity presented to you that maybe looks more shiny than the thing that you're doing now? Number six, what external systems do you have in place to hold you in place? Number seven, what working modes do you have available to shift down and up into? And this is to match your motivation stay and what's going on in your life? Number eight, how is your plan constructed to build sustainable consistency over time? And number nine, what is your track record looking like for building sustainable systems? If you've not built one before, how confident are you that this new one is going to work? Okay, so these are the basics that few people ever focus on. It's quite fascinating because they're not exactly novel things or some kind of hack or anything but. But these are the fundamentals that you need to get right because those things are going to happen to you.
Most people are focused on figuring out how to sprint by crafting these perfect plans with time blocks everywhere for every hour of the day, but not looking at the point where your life actually life gets messy and you have to manage things. So a lot of people plan to have multiple projects, multiple hobbies, learn new languages and learn a musical instrument. Think about this. Is this you flexing your planning ego? All thought, no action because you haven't started yet. If so, attempt to catch yourself now. If it didn't work last year. What are you really doing differently this year? Or is it just a variant of the same thing? A sustainable plan is not just stick to the plan. Now. I actually hear people say this a lot. This really just shows how little compassion we have for the emotional experience of, of execution and taking action. It's a lot harder than it, than it appears to be. It shows little to no understanding, empathy, and awareness of your true self. So the person who's actually doing the thing, we're clearly not understanding it. If you've broken the plan each time, something is going wrong there. So you need to think about this. If you want a fast track to reducing your confidence that's probably already shaky. If you haven't hit your goals from last year, this is one really excellent way to do it. Your new year fuel is a power source you should tap into if you feel it. But without a plan that will sustain you for as long as you need it to, it's worthless. Marathon runners, rowers, elite athletes, they don't blindly sprint to the finish line from the start line. They have a plan for when to push hard and when to pace. And they do a lot of training for each of these stages. So think about this. Are you ready? Or are you setting yourself up for the same trap as you've always done? Remember, this is you only get, you know, one shot at the beginning of the year. So you want to try and get this right and get your approach right. This isn't about sprinting harder and faster of the start line in a marathon. It's about working smarter, sustainable plans tailored to where you are. And so if you go through those questions I talked about earlier, that will help you work through this.
It's about holding yourself accountable when the motivation fades.
So when you get this fluctuation in your motivation state.
So what's your plan when the hype dies down? Okay, I'll see you in the next video.
