Five increasingly painful truths that will allow you to Crush it in 2023. They may be hard to hear, but they're the first steps necessary to reaching your full potential. 1. You said you'd start months ago. You promised yourself you'd start. You made a plan for tomorrow. You woke up and didn't execute. Months roll by and the same cycle repeated day after day, and you're no further ahead. You're setting yourself up for failure by waiting for tomorrow. When you have today, there's always an easier option to do something that brings you comfort. You put doing the work off because the thought of executing brings up feelings of discomfort, anxiousness, or overwhelm. But this feeling will only get worse the you leave it. The trick is to reduce the time gap between your thought and action so you engage before you have a chance to think and react. Here's how you can change your situation. Whatever you'd like to work on as soon as you think of it, get up, grab a pen or open the document and make a start without thought. Don't wait for the perfect condition to start. Because guess what? There's no such thing. 2. You know what you should be doing, but you don't do it. You know what you need to get done, but you're having trouble getting started and resort to endless scrolling. The continuous stream of stimulation activates your dopamine and stops you from doing the work. As you bathe in your dopamine addiction, the thought to act on what you need. Grades making it harder to do the right thing. Now your dopamine levels are too high, which is why you're having trouble getting started. So here's how to fix that. Either lay down or sit against a wall and rest and do nothing. Resist the urge to be productive at this point. Don't even stretch. You'll spend the first several minutes with your brain still running hard. But over time, as your dopamine levels drop, you will have clarity on what you need to do. Don't set a timer. Everyone's brain is different. So sit or lay there until you feel your brain no longer racing. Then return to work. 3. Most of your research and idea generation is procrastination disguised as productivity. You find yourself constantly researching and generating ideas, but this is often a source of procrastination. Avoidance of the inevitable discomfort you will encounter. It's a sneaky one because it's easily justified, as it looks like it's helping you move forward. It feels like it's productive too. You can feel your brain working. It's also limitless, as there's infinite sources of information to enhance your knowledge base about the topic. But the reality is, for most of you, you already have enough knowledge to know what to do next. And if you're not able to with this level of knowledge, you will likely struggle to act. Even when you do have more knowledge, your problem isn't the lack of knowledge, it's action. So here's what to do. Look inward and understand what you're afraid of. Take it out of the shadows and face it head on. Remind yourself you already have enough knowledge to take at least one tiny step forward and then take that step. 4. People who are less knowledgeable and intelligent than you will do better. You'll see plenty of people who appear to know less than you but are succeeding in the areas you want to be in. It's easy to get caught up in the idea that you need to know everything before you can take action. But the reality is that knowledge and your intelligence are not the only factors that determine success. Taking action, even if it's not perfect, is the key ingredient. People who are more action focused know how to concentrate their energy on what matters most. They cut doing nothing and doing low leverage actions and only push forward the high leverage actions. So how can you do this? Remove activities that don't directly contribute to the actual action of doing the thing. Remove excessive morning routines that are not helping you go in the direction of where you want to get to. You'll feel like you are getting stuff down, but it's the right focus. The work will be waiting for you whether or not you do your routine. 5. No one is going to sort your life out for you. Your life is your responsibility, as are your decisions. As an adult, you notice things don't happen if you don't make them happen. You may find yourself waiting for the right time or for someone to tell you what to do, like when you were younger, but it simply won't happen. Sometimes you want to blame someone else for your situation, your problems or shortcomings. Instead, take responsibility and recognize that you have the power to change your life. If you don't, years will pass by and you will remain stuck here. So here's your practical step. Consciously accept where you are and the reality of how you got there. Once you're here, you can start building an action plan based on where and who you are right now. Set clear and progressive goals that start from very easy so you can feel the sense of achievement early on, which will boost your motivation. If you have trouble doing this, seek assistance from people whose job it is to help, like a mentor, coach, or therapist.
