How to stop drifting through life: What you've been doing wrong

James Lim explains why you feel stuck: you're not asking big questions about what matters to you, and you're chasing material solutions instead. He recommends taking real time to reflect on your values and identity, then discussing those questions with someone you trust.

If you're trying to figure out what to do next in your life, or perhaps you're feeling a bit stuck in a life rut, you're probably making two big mistakes. In this video, you'll learn what you've been doing wrong, why it's been happening, and why it will keep going wrong until you change your approach in the right way. Finally, you'll take away the key point that will help start you moving out of your rut. Let's get started. So mistake number one, not asking the big questions. When was the last time you asked yourself, what do you really want? What does life mean to you? What's important and what makes life worthwhile? We don't get asked these big questions very often, so it can be quite uncomfortable letting these ideas and questions sit with us. It's simply not a normal thing to be dealing with. And we usually attribute these questions to having really deep conversations with people. And we don't usually have that very often. We have established and set ways of doing things and a clear hierarchy of what a successful life might look like. Better house, better job, better status, nicer cars, more luxurious holidays. But how hard have you actually thought about it and what were these ideas based on? You may find that all of these ideas, you've not really spent much time thinking about any of them much at all. So you end up just going with the flow. So this leads us on to mistake number two. So in absence of these big questions, when we feel pain or dissatisfaction with what's going on in our life, we often jump to those solutions that we mentioned earlier. So looking at going away to nicer holidays or looking at a better house or car to buy. And the problem is we jump to these solutions far too quickly without ever reflecting on these bigger ideas about what is the root cause of the pain we're feeling or the emptiness. Consequence of this is that we end up going through a never ending cycle of feeling a problem, some kind of. Some kind of emptiness which we feel with one of these established or set ways of doing things. With each iteration, looking at improving, improving by acquiring a slightly upgraded version, but never getting to the root cause of the of the issue. So the reality is that we never really end up understanding what the problem is. So how can we possibly come up with a solution if we don't even know what we're solving? So how can we make more meaningful progress in our life? The key is to take some time out now, some serious time out. This could be weeks, not just minutes or hours to think about these ideas. Now the questions you need to be asking yourself. Questions like what do you really value? What's really important to you, who are you? What do you believe in? And what really makes you feel alive? So spend some time on these questions and really take your time and reflect about it. It's actually really hard to do these, to answer these questions by yourself because you only have your. You only have yourself to bounce these ideas off. So one good way of doing it is to find a friend or a mentor and have this discussion with them because you can start letting your ideas flow and getting some feedback from others once you can establish this. This lays the foundations for building a life with more intention and conviction. In the next few videos on this channel, I'll be going through some methods to answer these questions effectively and get you moving along with this process. So that's it for this video.
