Self discipline is long term self care disguised as short term pain and discomfort. Here's a reframe to beat it and one exercise to master it. You're not motivated. You don't want to do it. It's uncomfortable. You follow this feeling and you stop. But here's the trick. Start learning to accept this feeling and realize it doesn't harm you. By leaning into this feeling, you can rewire your brain to associate discomfort with long term self care. Over time, as you start seeing progress from taking these uncomfortable actions, you your mind will experience a sense of reward. Because it now makes a connection between your behaviors and positive progress. This process slowly reprograms your mind. Your training begins now. Here's an exercise you can do today that will get you making progress in your long term self care. Each day do at least one thing that makes you feel uncomfortable. Something you feel resistance with. Experience the sensation. You will feel it in your body and it will resist and focus all your energy in taking action despite those feelings. While doing so, remind yourself out aloud or in your head that you are doing this in the knowledge that you are training yourself to be stronger and looking after yourself in the long run.
