Renovate Yourself Renovate Your Wealth Introduction V2 Training Premise

Jane Slack-Smith introduces the idea that true wealth starts as an inner asset, using her 20 years as a mining engineer, property investor, and mortgage broker to show how limiting beliefs block financial growth. She maps personal wealth as an inner balance sheet of strengths and liabilities, then walks through client stories where shifting those stories led to financial independence.

the training here today with the training premise. So I have a training premise for today, which is the, the oversight of how I filtered all the information that came to me on how I would like to share this with you. And the training premise is that true wealth is an inner asset. So first of all, let's talk about what is a premise. So a premise is actually a scientific term Now, being an ex-engineer, I love science. I need to know the numbers first. I'm not all into the woo-woo. I want to make sure that things are kind of grounded before I take the next step. So for me, a premise is really important because it gives me an opportunity to have a framework. Now, a premise is not an immutable law. It's more like a working assumption. So, you know, we don't have to defend it to the death. It may be right for now. It may be proven wrong in the future. You don't have to take these premises out in the future and, you know, be the good knight and defend it absolutely. It's a working opportunity for us to explore all of the things that we're going to explore today. Now, I know that, you know, we have ways that we think. So, for instance, I was a mining engineer for 17 years. You know, I spent 4 years at university studying mining techniques, and my now husband Todd about 15 years ago, um, said to me kind of casually, oh, did you hear that, uh, they're now planting, uh, plants, uh, in, uh, in the ground that can leach gold? And I was like, what are you talking about? It's a new technique for mining. You can leach gold with, with these plants. And now I had been conditioned and I had learned that there was two ways to actually mine. There's a chemical and a mechanical. There's no biological kind of technique to do it that involved plants. And I have to say, I pretty much defended the fact that he had got this wrong, and he couldn't find proof. And I was just like, this is just one of those crazy things that you come up with. My premise was there was a mechanical and a chemical, not biological, way to mine. Now fast forward to about 6 months ago— this is like 15 years ago— we were sitting down with our 14-year-old son. We were talking about, you know, career choices for Year 10, 11, and 12. And I was I was saying, you know, a lot of the careers and jobs that are around now won't be around in the future. And I threw out there this comment that said, by the way, 29 of the 50 states of America, the number one job is truck driver, and by 2024, 50% of those jobs will be gone, and by 2030, most of them. And my husband called BS. He's like, nah, can't be true, it's not true. Company, they can't even get a car to drive, how can you get trucks on the road to drive? It's not true. And at the time I thought, I'm going to prove this wrong. He's got this premise around there's no way it can be self-driving trucks. And I know I read something somewhere. So I found this article and I sent it to him and I was feeling very validated that I had just proven his complete, you know, view of the world. And guess what he said back to me? An article about how gold was leached from plants. And it was a really nice way for him to actually go, you know, we all kind of have premises that can be, yeah, like Mark One, that can be blown apart. And I had to change my consideration. And apparently there is a way to actually leach gold using plants. So what I'm sharing this for you is that we're going to be working through 4 premises today. These premises that I believe, these premises are working assumptions that I work under. And there is an overarching premise, and that is that true wealth is an inner asset. And I really believe that. I know that many people consider wealth and the measure of wealth as external assets, the doodads and the fancy cars and the things that validate themselves to the world. And I really would like to challenge that. And that's why this overarching premise is around just working on what your true wealth is. And if you take care of your inner assets first, renovate yourself, then you can renovate the wealth that you want to create in the world and the way that you want to turn up. So kind of makes you wonder, right? What is the true measurement of wealth? And I really challenge you to think about this as a personal balance sheet. You know, what are the inner values of assets that you have? And, you know, what are also the liabilities or the limitations that you have? And if you have this inner balance sheet of liabilities and assets, it's around the one that has the most value that is the one that is how you're turning up in life. And what I really am keen to show you today is how to accentuate or how to bring out those inner assets that will reflect in wealth in your life in so many different ways. Now, spoiler alert, we want to minimize the liabilities and we want to maximize the assets, right? So that's really where we're spending time and what we want to do. And I really believe that these inner liabilities that we carry are from the stories, the money stories from our past. And, you know, the thousands of people that I've worked with over the years, I've really seen, um, the more and more that I dig into what is going on is that there's something from their past that they're repeating, and often they don't even see it. Because true wealth is a choice, and true wealth is a direct result of the orientation of how you choose to show up and how you choose to bring those stories from the past with you. So don't get me wrong, I'm not rocking here the, you know, be poor and you'll be happy kind of mindset. I'm saying you can have it all. True wealth will actually lead to financial wealth, and I've seen that turn up time and time again. I know that financial abundance is something that gives people security. And, you know, just a hands up here, who would like to create something in the world, you know, to improve the world or improve your family's legacy or the financial position. And you're not just doing this for yourself, but you're doing it— yeah, right, you're doing it for, you know, everything else that you want to do. And how much easier would it be if you had some money to be able to do that? So, you know, I'm, uh, you know, I'm definitely a conscious capitalist, and I say that completely hand on heart. And I know the value of money is, is often just determined as an energy exchange. I know having run courses for for many years and given the course away that people didn't value it. And when they had to put a bit of a financial commitment behind it, they were the first ones to say, I want the recording, I need the workbook, and I want it in color, and I want to have access. And so I know that it makes people show up, but I also know that, uh, it is a limitation that people have, that they have to have the wealth before they can go for what they want. 'So when I have the job of my dreams, when I have the house of the dreams, when I have the partner and I have the car and I have everything that I need, then I can go for what I want, and then I can go for what I really want to create.' And I'm saying, 'Hey, choose everything, go for it all,' you know. And I don't, um, and I'm not saying it's not okay to have the Porsche, but what I'm saying is, well, the Porsche, it is really, you know, where are you coming from when you want to have a Porsche? Is it about having the thrill of the wind in your hair and living a life extraordinary spirited, full of freedom? Or is it about showing the Joneses across the road that you've got a Porsche? So it's really from where you're coming from, and that's really what I'd like to acknowledge today. So I guess before we move on to that first premise, it's probably important to give you a little bit of a set point of where I am coming from and why I feel that it's so important to be able to talk about this. And, you know, I have been investing for over 21 years now. I was really of the mindset that I needed to crack the code in property investment and work out how to make it work. And you know, it was important for me to use my skills as a mining engineer and an explosives expert to de-risk, you know, property investing, to de-risk the financial abundance that I wanted. And the only way I could work out how to de-risk that was to really get into the numbers and understand how to make property investing something that I wasn't going to lose my little $45,000 deposit that I'd saved up by the age of 28. And so I decided that there was a way to do this. I met over 23 years ago, my now husband Todd. He had seen property investing working in New Zealand. He'd started doing it over there. We had this assumption that if you buy a property and pay it off, and then you could buy a second property and there was a number of courses that we went to. I read over 120 books on property investing just to work out how to crack this. And, you know, we did. We did a really great way of within 5, 6 very short years, actually bought a number of properties that set us up. So it allowed us to move on. But when I could see this was an opportunity for then choosing a life that we wanted, my husband to leave IT and go and become an artist, and for me to follow my heart and really helping other people, I started showing my friends and family and then they were building multimillion dollar property portfolios and I was like, oh, I need new friends. And so back in 2005, the only way that I could actually talk about property and property investing in Australia was through the, I guess, the legal framework of being a mortgage broker. So I decided that I was going to set up a mortgage broking business that was best practice. I I always looked at how to hack success. So I got the top 20 mortgage brokers in Australia's names. I rang them up and said, I'm thinking about becoming a mortgage broker and can I ask you 20 questions? I asked them all 20 questions, you know, everything from what phone plan you have is how do you find your clients? I asked them, you know, what was the one mistake they made when they set up, the one thing they wish they knew, you know, all everything. And so I set up best practice. I spent 3 months writing the procedures for my business before I got my first client. And it wasn't until years later people said, gosh, you must have been so brave in setting up a business that was commission only. I was, and I really, it really shocked me because I didn't think about that. All I was thinking of was the end goal of bringing people to financial abundance through residential property like I had and sharing my story. And, you know, I came from a place of, of service and, you know, turned up, you know, 17 years later, I still have the business. I won Australia's Mortgage Broker of the Year a couple of times. Quite a few years ago. But you know, I decided that that was what I wanted to do. Then in 2011, I thought, I'm running these tiny little workshops for people about how to buy properties. What if I could do more? And so once again, I decided I'd hack it. I couldn't see anyone who was doing online property investing education well with the, you know, the person's outcome at heart, but someone overseas was. So I flew backwards and forwards in a mentoring mastermind group for a year and set up online education, set up, you know, what I felt was the best adult education system for teaching because I really wanted to help people. I could see I could set up their mortgages, but then they were buying the wrong property. It's like, okay, I really want to teach them how to buy the right property. But then I could see someone else had a renovation course and they were having— they had a course that was a lot more expensive. And I thought, oh, doubts and fears came into my mind. I lost sight of the end goal of helping everyone out. I wanted to, you know, validate all of my fears that I had, which was I want to help everyone. I want to be the nice person. I want to be loved. And so I'm going to have a course that's half the price of the other course and I'm going to deliver more for people so that I can really have that validation. And it became about me to some extent. Now, yes, I went and did 170 hours of filming renovation videos and the course is still alive today and it's incredible. How it has— how often people come back and tell me about how it's changed their lives. So, you know, just this week, a lady called me up and said, I don't know if you remember, but I bought your course in 2012. Just wanted to let you know that, you know, I did a strategic renovation on a little property. It allowed me then every 14 months to buy another property. I gave up my job after the first property, and now she makes hundreds of thousands of dollars of rental income a year with all the properties she has, just following the plan. Some people get it, right? And then some people were buying the same course but they weren't getting it. And this started really frustrating me. And, you know, yes, you know, I sold millions of dollars worth of courses to people. And, you know, probably I learned a lot along the way because it, you know, it cost me a lot to do that because I always wanted everything to be perfect because I had these doubts about who was I to show up. And I share this with you because these, this recognition of these stories of how I was showing up, you know, the mortgage business, I showed up and set that up with the person that I was delivering the end result to. And the other, um, the other business I set up with that as the initial intention, but then I got all these doubts about being perfect and being right and turning up, then being better than others. And then I let that go and just turned up in my fullness and, you know, I could see how people were changing their lives with this. And so, you know, and here's another story, right? Caught myself in this this week. You know, every time I'd be asked to speak from the stage in front of hundreds of people or do podcasts or, um, you know, turn up at conferences, I'd get in my mind, oh my gosh, I have to look perfect, I better go and get my hair done, and I need to buy a new outfit. To the extent I've actually bought new outfits when I'm turning up to a podcast, like an audio podcast, right? And so I— this week I went and booked hairdresser's appointment, as you can tell, and, uh, or maybe not. And the hairdresser said, I thought you weren't going to put a color in anymore. I was like, oh God, I'm in my, like, my story where I have to turn up perfect, hair and makeup has to look great. So I didn't get a new outfit for today, but just, just these stories just keep coming up, right? And it's about being aware of this operating system that you're working from. And there's something in the past where I had set this operating system that was just working on autopilot, that was for me to, um, be able to deliver the information and share the information. People needed to see me in a certain way. So, you know, I just, I really want you to, I guess, see this journey of, of how I've created things in the past that have been successful, but but also being aware of the fact that I had to work pretty hard for these things. In the mortgage business, didn't have to work very hard because I came from a certain place. But in this business, you know, the education business, I dropped into a bit of a recurring story. And then, you know, around about 2019, I dropped into hearing all of these people saying, look, you know, I've got the course or I've got the finance, I just don't know where to look. I really need someone to really help me. And I had people asking me to do mentoring. And I know there's a couple of you here at the moment and I thought, oh, you know, who am I to turn up? You know, I've had business mentors from the first day of being a mortgage broker. You know, I flew backwards and forwards to learn how to online education. My business coach cost me $60,000 a year and they were just absolute investments that I made that 10x the payment that I made on them. So I knew the value, but I couldn't see the value myself. Stop. But people kept asking and asking and asking. And I know there's someone here at the moment— I used to say I'm going to have a really set time, you know, you can only turn up in January, I won't take people during the year. And this one person who's here looked at that and said, ah, it's September, I may as well go and buy a property and I'll wait until, you know, January and then I'll get the rest of them. And, you know, it probably wasn't such a great decision at the time. And I could see then that my limitations were actually limiting others as well. And I've taught over 2,500 people who have bought my courses. I've got a community reach of over 100,000 people that I speak to regularly. But it's the stories of those that have done it. I can think of one of my very dear friends, helped her set up a property portfolio and she got, um, and Yes. And all of a sudden, life changed, you know, in your 40s. And it's like, well, I'm not going to delay traveling Europe in a caravan with my partner. I'm going to do it now. I'm going to sell a property and do it now. And she had the choice to do that. And Russell, who shares his story in my renovation course, he, he was like, you know, late 50s and always said, I want to do property investing. His daughter bought him the course. He's like, you know, I'm a tradie, I can't really get this right. I'm just going to follow the bouncing ball. I'm not going to put my own little tinkering on it. And he did. And he took his annual leave off and in 10 days, he bought in the right area with growth potential. He renovated strategically on budget and his $14,000 investment and 10-day investment added $70,000 to the property straight away. Now the renovation was great, but the thing is he bought in the right area. 3 years later it had gone up $300,000 and he did it again. And, you know, it really set him up. And it wasn't until recently he came back and said, you know, life really threw me a bit of a hard ball. And, you know, I was shocked my wife wanted to end the relationship. And if we hadn't done this 5 years ago, then, you know, we both would have walked away with nothing. We would have had to sell the family home and had not enough for us to go forward and move on with life. This way we had 2 properties that we could sell and we both set up our lives again. And as much as this is a horrible situation, having those— having that financial wealth and that foundation behind us helped. And, um, you know, one of the, the charities that I support, Pippa Lepsi, helping, uh, families with kids with, with epilepsy, you know, the client bought properties and renovated them and created wealth. And, uh, when their tiny daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy and they both had to give up their jobs, they had the financial means to make that decision. And, you know, So I know that inner wealth is important, but I also daily get stories from people who have taken the action for their financial wealth and being able to create that life for themselves as well. So, you know, I, I guess when I look at the people who get it and the people who don't, really about 4 years ago, I just jumped straight into trying to work out why some people don't get it and what, what is that trigger. And more and more it started coming up that there was these stories and my My meditation coach Amanda had said to me back in 2020, you should really check out, you know, this, this, this free course I've just done, Create Your Destiny. You should really check it out. And I'm like, and then two of my mentoring students said they were really struggling with their career crisis. And I was like, yeah, I'm a property investing person. I can't really help you with that. And then when I started asking them about it, the things that were holding them back in their property investing was actually the same things that were holding them back in their career. And in their relationships. And I thought, there's something to this, but I don't feel I have the capacity to do this. So I jumped right into it and said, okay, hell yeah, I'll help. I'll go with you on this course. Let's go for the ride together because I'm not too sure where it's going to go, but I don't recommend things I wouldn't do myself. And I could see these incredible transformations in them and then in me too. And I went on and I finished that curriculum in the Natural Success Community. And, you know, it just made all the difference because it gave me the tools and the structure to see all of these stories. So, you know, I guess, you know, when I'm thinking about, you know, how people want to have success and I'm talking about with them in discovery calls for, you know, any of the businesses that I have, it all comes down to being aware of sometimes this story that's going on in their head. They're, they're operating system, this default system that they don't even know exists. And so with that in mind, that for me is something that is really important to A, identify, and B, just be acknowledged that there's something there. So that's what my real intention for you today is, using the last 20 years of my experience of working with thousands and thousands of people and seeing some succeed and some not, and seeing a condition often that they put on them that they have to have financial health first before they can go for what they want. But they haven't actually acknowledged the stories that may be limiting them or the stories that are repeating. And some people are succeeding, which is fantastic, but they're doing it the hard way, like I did with the education business. I did it the hard way because I was coming from the wrong place. So that's my— that's, I guess, why I feel so strongly about sharing this with you. And I just love to get a little bit of feedback. Is anything
