Autodoc: Automatic text-to-code for your docs page

Jay demos AutoDoc, a plugin that generates NumPy code from plain English requests. Type "drop the lowest-sum row from a matrix" and get working code instantly, no Stack Overflow needed. The tool cuts iteration time and helps developers write more reliable code.

Hey folks, I'm Jay, and this is a quick demo of AutoDoc. So anybody who's ever written code with some sort of an API like NumPy or something else, they definitely have the experience where you hit a wall and you're like, how do I do this? I need to know the specific commands in order to accomplish a task. And that especially happens in sort of like dense mathematical coding, like with NumPy or Pandas, etc. And so wouldn't it be great if instead of going off and searching Stack Overflow and inevitably copying and pasting what somebody has written in Stack Overflow, you could just go to the docs and ask a question right there? Well, it turns out you can actually do that if you use GPT-3 or Codex or a similar model. So right here we have a very simple plugin basically just plugged in on top of the NumPy docs, and it's been sort of fine-tuned to understand specifically how to work with NumPy. And you can say something like, for instance, drop the lowest sum row from a matrix, return the resulting matrix, and hit enter. And this will actually generate code that does it for you. So, you know, obviously this is going to cut down on the actual iteration time, especially if people, you know, don't want to go and look at the specific manual pages for different functions and try and figure out how to do this themselves. And you can also imagine something where, you know, in here you would actually, if you hover over this function, it would point you to the docs page for argsort, or, you know, somehow in here it would generate a comment that actually explains what this function is doing. You know, the sky's the limit here. And as you can see, if we actually run this code, you'll see it took this function right here, or this matrix, which I don't know if you can see it due to my face bubble, but it drops this row And it output that one, or this, you can see this is the matrix output here. So clearly, you know, this is pretty valuable. I personally now use it when I'm writing NumPy code. It's super convenient. And I think a lot of other people who have docs pages would do well to basically install something like this and empower the users to write better code. Thank you so much. Let me know if you have any questions.
