AutoTool - Conversational UI for Retool

Jay Hack demos AutoTool, which uses GPT-3 to let non-technical users build analytics dashboards by talking. He builds a DVD rental tool from scratch with plain-language prompts, creating queries, forms, and interactive components without writing code.

Hey, this is a demo of AutoTool, a conversational UI for Retool and Tooljet. The idea is that non-technical users can very rapidly build analytics or internal tools based purely on speech, and instead of having to actually go in and write code. So imagine we have a store that rents DVDs. We have a bunch of information like actors, we have the addresses of our customers, we have our actual customers, we have films, we have inventory, we have rentals, and much more. I want to make a dashboard, but I don't know how to write code. So instead, I'm just gonna go ahead and say what I want. I want a dashboard— oops— allows me select a category, then shows me all of our inventory with the inventory ID, film name, and film description in that category. Cool. And just a note, I'm gonna go ahead and skip through the loading states to make this demo snappier. Beautiful. So we can see on the right here, it's actually generated a dashboard for me based on my textual prompt. So I can select a film and I can see all the inventory we have in that film. So for instance, Alter Victory, looks like we have a couple inventory here and here's a description. Now I wanna do something useful. So I'm going to say, um, when I select a film, an inventory, show me the customer name, email, and rental date. For all rentals of this film. Great. So we can drill down further. Amazing. So now if I select film, let's just take our favorite, Alter Victory, we see all the people who've rented this as well as the rental date. Awesome. So now I actually want to be able to create rentals for people. So I'm going to go ahead and say, add a form that allows me to select a customer the email address. Then when I hit submit, creates a new rental for the selected customer and the selected inventory. Beautiful. Awesome. Form came up. Let's give it a shot. So pick animation, find one of these films, Alter Victory. Looks like there's a couple people here. I'll just pick a random person, Patricia Johnson. I'll take Barbara Jones. She has not rented this film before. I'm going to go ahead and submit. And now reselect this, we should see Barbara Jones has actually rented it. And just, you know, we'll tidy up a little bit. Let's say order the rentals table by most recent. Cool. So now if we go animation, check out this one, and we should see people who most recently rented it. It looks like this is in fact ordered by most recent. So as you can see, you can control all aspects of this, including layout. So I could say stack this under that one. I can create forms, I can create all kinds of components and even basically describe what needs to happen in the dashboard. And GPT-3 will just figure it out. So I think this is a very promising direction for the future of internal tools. Enables a lot of people who are non-technical to be able to build things that are super valuable to themselves. And everybody sort of has better self-service when it comes to internal tooling and analytics. Thanks very much. Let me know if you have any feedback.
