Hi, I'm Dr. Jeff Lengmaid with youh Research Minute. Chiropractic Maintenance Care Is it something that should be involved in evidence based practice or left behind in the past? That is exactly what this paper looked to answer and it is titled Chiropractic Maintenance Care. What's New? A Systematic Review of the Literature Our understanding of spinal pain has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few decades. We now know that it is a reoccurring disorder in that while episodes may come and go, people with back pain tend to have future episodes of back pain. And that is where us as chiropractors can come in huge. Previous research has talked about how chiropractors may be able to benefit people that have recurring bout to low back pain through maintenance care. By being able to detect and potentially even prevent future episodes. These researchers found, quote Presently maintenance care can be considered an evidence based method to perform secondary or tertiary prevention in patients with previous episodes of low back pain who report a good outcome from their initial treatment. So if you've had a patient who's come in to see you and got great results with your care, it is a wise thought to shift your strategy from episodic care to the management of a reoccurring disorder throughout time. It'll benefit your patients, it'll help keep them active, and it certainly is what we know is evidence based. I'll see you next week for another research minute.
