Quiet Your Inner Critic in 1 Minute — Silly Voice Trick (Silly on Purpose Day 2)
13 Oct 2026 · 2 min
A two-step trick to quiet your inner critic: give your negative voice a name like Hurricane Doreen, then replay its harsh statements in a high-pitched helium voice to strip them of power. Takes one minute.

Welcome. I'm so glad you're here. Let's talk about the voice in your head. You know the one. It shows up uninvited, like a relative who was just in the neighborhood, and it has opinions about your hair, your emails, and every life choice for the last few decades. Today we're giving it 2 things, a name and a new voice. Step 1, let's give that mood a name like a hurricane. When the grumpy, gloomy feeling rolls in, don't say, I'm a mess. Say, ah, Hurricane Doreen is moving through the kitchen. Doreen is loud. Doreen knocks over the lawn chairs, but Doreen is weather. She passes. Step 2, helium. When your inner critic says something mean, replay it in the squeakiest chipmunk voice you can imagine. You're never gonna get it together. And now hear that through that helium balloon. See, it's really hard to feel crushed by a cartoon. You're not ignoring the thought. You're just taking away its microphone and handing it a kazoo. Take in a breath and remind yourself today you're gonna get a little silly when that negative voice comes in. And in doing so, you will also know that that thought was just as silly. Hold and exhale with the smile the shift brings to mind. Try it the next time Doreen blows in today. Name her, squeak her, watch her shrink. The thought might still show up. It just doesn't get to be the boss of you in that outfit. I'm sending you so much love. If there's someone you know that can use a little laughter or peace, please send this to them. And please subscribe to keep returning to peace in under 2 minutes a day. Thank you so very much for being here with me today.
