When you resist difficult emotions, they get louder. Instead, let yourself feel them without judgment or trying to fix them. Emotions want to be acknowledged and held, and that acceptance naturally reduces their intensity.

When we're experiencing difficult emotions, the tendency can be to want to try to fix it or push it away or somehow make it different. And the paradox is that when we do that, a lot of times the emotions get bigger and they get louder because they don't want to be pushed away. They actually want to be felt. They want to be acknowledged and they want to be known. The pain sometimes just really wants to be known. So if we can just for a moment allow ourselves to be exactly as we are without trying to make it different, without making it bad or wrong, without feeling like we're something that needs to be fixed, then what happens is we bring attention to the feeling, to the emotion, and actually just let it be held, allow it to exist. And the paradox is a lot of times then it will shift.
