Jessica Lawson lost 140 lb after gastric sleeve surgery, regained 15 lb, then lost it again in 30 days. She says regain isn't about willpower but about "food noise" that returns after the surgery's honeymoon period ends. The surgery changes your stomach, not your brain.

Talked to thousands of bariatric women at this point who are regaining weight. Most of them think that when the weight comes back on and the scale's going back up, it's that their willpower is slipping. I lost 140 lbs after my gastric sleeve surgery, then regained 15 lbs and then lost it in 30 days. I understand exactly how it feels to regain weight and be absolutely terrified that you're going to go right back to where you started. But when I sat down and really figured out why do people regain weight after surgery, it has nothing to do with willpower. If you had surgery, you You amputated your body. You did the hardest thing. And it really comes down to this lifelong struggle with food. It is very rare that I meet someone that had surgery that has not struggled with food their entire life. So when food noise comes back, when all the challenges that you faced before surgery with food come back, the only story that your brain knows is that you got weak because that's what American society likes to tell us. But that's not really what happened. The surgery changed your stomach. It did not change your brain. For about 6 months to a year, the surgery can quiet your hunger. That's the honeymoon period. And when the honeymoon period ends, the noise, the problems with food come roaring back, sometimes even worse than before. The surgery was never going to fix this. Regain is not a discipline problem. It's a calendar problem. Once you see that, you stop white knuckling and start working on fixing the real problem. Start working on the thing that's actually running the show. What I teach in my free workshop, How to Eliminate Food Noise After Bariatric Surgery, is how regain happens and how to stop it before the scale moves.
