Why I Quit AI for Content Creation (as an AI Founder)

Jim Ebbelaar, founder of the #1 ADHD school community with 12,000 members, quit AI-scripted content after burning out on formulaic videos and quick hooks. During a plant-medicine retreat in Costa Rica, he committed to 90 days of raw, unedited daily videos about running his businesses and managing ADHD, trading polish for vulnerability.

All right, so it's time for something new. If you are someone that struggles with ADHD, entrepreneurship, content creation, or life in general, or anything in between all of those, then this video is for you. I will be sharing something very exciting. What I will be doing over the next 90 days is I will be sharing my personal journey as raw and uncut as possible. So I will give you a behind the scenes how I am publicly building a, the number one school community about ADHD. I will be sharing you how I create my AI products. I will be transitioning my agency. There's a lot of stuff playing in my life right now and I wanted to make content, but let's take a step back and explain why I struggled so much with creating content. So first of all, for those of you that already know me, maybe you know a year, a year ago I started actually making videos. I decided to lock in on a niche and focus on ADHD founders and make content around it. But honestly, it felt so suffocating to do that. Like, I really felt like I couldn't express myself. I couldn't share authentically because I was locked into this niche. And this might be something that you are struggling with as well. If you're an entrepreneur or if you want to start making content, this is something like all of the business advice is pick a niche and stay consistent and just focus on one thing and specialize. And even though that advice is solid, it really didn't work for me. So I started school a year ago and I decided to focus on ADHD Founders and the program was good, but it didn't turn out. And then instead of like obsessing over the niche and the numbers and actually scaling it, I decided to just start a free school community and run paid ads and just share as much free value as possible. Of course, I was in a position to do that, but the funny thing is that it became profitable pretty quick. Now, what I really have learned in that community is that the more authentically I spoke, the more I shared my own journey and really speak from my heart, from my soul, and shared the struggles in life. That is when the audience started to resonate with me, when people actually started to get excited to come on those live So I transitioned from getting almost no views, like I put out those ADHD entrepreneurship videos and I got almost zero views, into now running the number one ADHD school community with over 12,000 active members, which is kind of insane. So that is why I'm also making this video. In this video, I want to share my plan for the next 90 days. And to start off, I also want to share something in relationship to AI and content generation. So one of the reasons why content generation and content creation was like burning me out so much has also to do with AI. Now, first of all, don't get me wrong. I love AI. I use AI for a lot of stuff on a daily basis, and I'm also building my own AI products. So this is not a video to bash on AI or no, not at all. But what I did came to realize the more and more is that so many creators out there are using AI in the wrong way. And I don't want to like bash on them. I just want to share what my conclusion is and how I basically don't align with the content anymore. So as someone that is like watching, consuming a lot of like content around lifestyle, productivity, spirituality, and all of this stuff and everything in between, I recently more and more start to notice how kind of every video is getting the same hooks, the same kind of story arc, the same buildup, the same the same words being used, the same sentences, how they build up and everything. And I just start to feel less and less connection with those creators. Now, the reason why is because I immediately recognize the patterns between how they use AI for their creative process and how the content is starting to lose the heart relationship and then the soul connection. It just doesn't really resonate with me anymore. And the reason why I, and maybe others out there as well, maybe The same goes for you. Start to notice that, like, I watch a lot of content and I use a lot of AI. So for me, this pattern is becoming extremely clear. I can honestly spot it instantly right now. As soon as the video starts and you see those quick cuts and you see like those triggers being used and I instantly feel like, okay, this is something I just don't want to watch. And I think this pattern is something that we will start to see more and more, that people will just get click on this clickbait title generated by AI, get the hook by AI, get extremely quick cuts done by AI, and basically recognize that this video is not actually coming from a soul level, but it's just actually some sloppy content. Now, the reason why I am sitting here right now recording this video is because right now I am in Nosara in Costa Rica, and I just finished my first plant medicine retreat. Now, after connecting with a lot of cool creators out there and a lot of like-minded people and also being inspired by the medicine and by nature, I felt the urge to create content again. I got so much energy and excitement coming here in this villa after the retreat. And I was sitting here, I grabbed the camera and I started recording this first video. Well, I did it, not this video, but a video I was trying to make before this. The video was pretty good, but what did I do? I uploaded the transcript to AI and I asked, is this a good hook? Will this keep retention? Is there actually a story arc? All of those questions I started to ask and I started to obsess over the details again. And I was like, okay, I actually have to recreate this video. So I started creating a new script and I started like interacting and doing iteration over iteration over iteration. And I was like reading the script And it was like my voice was almost gone entirely. And then I was like, what is the actual point of making content if I'm going to do it in this way? And then I started to basically fall into this pattern, in this loop again of researching online, trying to get inspiration from other creators, trying to pick that niche, trying to obsess over scripts. And I just got so much overwhelmed that I again was about to give up immediately. I was like, maybe, maybe this is actually not not for me. So what did I do? I was about to give up, but instead I walked here outside and I sit on a chair right there next to me and I started connecting with myself. Like I started doing breathwork, very deep, pretty long. And I kind of got this download where I was like, you know what, F AI at this point. I'm not going to use any AI. I am just going to basically do public journaling. That is what I kind of downloaded in the moment. I really felt that as an entrepreneur running multiple businesses, struggling with ADHD, overcoming like a lot of shit, I really feel like I want to share my story with the world and what I have overcome and where I am at right now. And I don't want a polished Hoogs or a like inauthentic story. No, I want to share my journey. I want to share the raw moments. I want to show you how I'm building in public. I want to let you know how I am struggling myself as well with creating this video, with running my school community, with managing the businesses. I want to be like completely honest. I want to share the emotions behind it, how it makes me feel, the decisions that I have to make, the overthinking, and basically everything in between. And I really believe that that will allow me to speak authentically, to really be myself in front of the camera, sitting here speaking to you. And that is what will make it fun again. So instead of me overthinking and obsessing with the eye over those details, I'm just going to sit in front of this camera every single day for the next 90 days. And this is like a public commitment that I am making that will also help me to keep accountable and share this, this journey with you. And I really believe that it is not only going to help me with actually sharing my journey and expressing authentically, but I honestly believe that the stuff that I am going to put out there will help you so, so much. Because being here, like, surrounded by a lot of entrepreneurs and creators, I really learned that the most valuable insights that I got was from deeply connecting with those people by sharing vulnerable, by actually talking about the struggles, talking about the wins, but also zooming in on like the feelings that are underneath the surface. Because nowadays, like, you just see the polished version, you just see the grinding entrepreneurs in their Lamborghinis and all that stuff. But I really want to like share what's going on behind the scenes, beneath the surface, show you how I build basically publicly. And also on a daily basis, what kind of decisions do I have to make, what kind of emotions come up, and how I am personally handling this, them, so you can hopefully learn from that as well. So if you are interested in following my journey, I would highly recommend you to subscribe to the channel, like this video, and I would love to see you in the next one. Thank you a lot for staying till the end. It really means a lot to me. See you soon. Bye-bye.
