In this monologue, the speaker introduces the concept of "emotional malnutrition," describing how using food to manage emotions fails to meet true emotional needs. A client example illustrates emotional eating after a stressful workday, where the habit of raiding the pantry provides temporary distraction but ultimately increases stress. The speaker proposes replacing the food habit with a more nourishing coping strategy—a 20‑minute bubble bath—to genuinely relax and unwind. The key message is to view emotional eating not as something to merely stop, but as a behavior to substitute with healthier emotional self‑care practices, thereby addressing the underlying emotional hunger.

Are you emotionally malnourished from emotional eating? What I mean is, if you've been using food to manage your emotions, there's a good chance that you're emotionally malnourished because the food's not genuinely fulfilling your emotional needs. Let me give you an example. What I mean, I had a client who was struggling with eating after work. They would get home, go to the pantry and eat every day after work. And so when we look at it through this lens, we realize that what's going on is they had a challenging day, right? It was busy. And they get home and they're tired, they're exhausted, and, and they just wanna unwind, relax, let go of the day. And so they're using the food to do that, right? So this is emotional eating. But what's happening is they're not really relaxing, they're not really unwinding. They're just eating food that makes them feel more stressed, ultimately. So the solution that they came up with is they went home and instead of going to the pantry, they went into the bathtub and had a bubble bath. Now we compare these two experiences of eating in the pantry versus taking a 20 minute bubble bath where you really relax and unwind. And you can see that one of these is going to nourish you emotional much, much more than the food. So instead of looking at emotional eating as something that you have to stop, look at it as something that you need to replace with a better strategy to feel the emotions that you want to feel. This changes everything.
