Jim Katsoulis argues that self-compassion works better than self-criticism for weight loss. Criticism triggers shame, which makes people eat to feel better, creating a cycle that sabotages progress. Treating mistakes as learning moments instead breaks that pattern.

When it comes to losing weight, self-compassion is much more effective than self-criticism. Because when you're critical with yourself and beating yourself up about mistakes that you made, it makes you feel bad. And one of the easiest ways to relieve feeling bad is to go back to the food. So it creates this vicious cycle. When you start being compassionate with yourself, you understand you're working to make a change and that it takes time and effort and you're gonna make mistakes. And when you're more compassionate, you allow yourself to learn from those mistakes and you don't feel as bad about them. And that causes you not to go to the food as much. So it becomes a lot easier to lose weight. So next time you make a mistake, start practicing being more compassionate with yourself.
