Short video/lecture by Jim Katsoulis arguing that the nervous system strongly influences body weight. He claims chronic sympathetic (fight-or-flight) activation raises cortisol, increases fat retention and cravings, and reduces cognitive function; activating the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) system lowers cortisol and cravings and improves clarity and creativity, enabling sustainable weight loss.

How your nervous system can make you thin. So much of your weight is dictated by your nervous system. And a lot of people in the modern world have over activated sympathetic nervous systems, which is your fight or flight response. And when this is activated, you have increased levels of cortisol, which cause you to hold on to fat. You have increased cravings. And probably most important of all is that you have decreased brain function because the blood flows from your brain out to your muscles so you can fight or flee. And in this state, you're very reactive and you're unable to find solutions to challenges that are keeping you overweight. So if you really want to change your weight once and for all, you want to start activating your parasympathetic nervous system, your rest and digest system. And when you relax, not only do you lower levels of cortisol, you decrease unhealthy cravings, but most importantly, you're able to think more clearly. You can start to see the situation from a fresh perspective. And you're connected to your creativity and your wisdom, so you can find better solutions that allow you to live at your goal weight for the rest of your life.
