losing weight doesn't have to be hard

Jim Katsoulis argues that obsessing over weekly or monthly weight loss leads to extreme, miserable plans people abandon. Shift to annual goals instead. Smaller, sustainable changes compound into lasting results.

What would you think if I told you you're probably making your weight loss way harder than it needs to be because you're making one simple mindset mistake, which in the truth, isn't really your fault. The diet industry has kind of implanted that into your mind, and it's now sabotaging all your weight loss. Most likely that mistake is that you're thinking in way too short of a time frame. You know, if I ask you the question, how long would you like to keep the weight off for? You're probably going to say forever. But when you take a step back and look at how you've approached your weight loss, you're probably going to realize that you're fixated on losing weight quickly and you're really focused on how much weight you can lose this week, this month, and you don't give a shit how long you're going to be able to keep it off for. And I think that's the core reason you are struggling. Because if you only think about how fast you can lose weight this week, this month, you choose extreme, unsustainable plans that are miserable. And you now sit here thinking about weight loss 24 hours a day, but not really taking action to make it happen. And I think the core reason why is because the ways you think you have to lose weight are all very unappealing to you. You don't want to do them because you feel deprived, they suck, they're boring, they're hard, and you don't want to do them, so you avoid them. And so what's the answer? Well, the answer is you stop thinking about how much weight you can lose this week and this month, and you start asking the question, how much weight can I lose this year? How can I make this easier? How can I make it more comfortable? How can I make this more sustainable? You're probably not asking these questions. And once you start asking these questions and finding answers to them, the entire process changes instantly because you stop trying to overwhelm yourself and overcorrect yourself and do everything perfect starting on Monday. And instead you start more strategically improving, bit by bit, so that by next year you are a different version of yourself inside and out, and it feels sustainable. It feels like this is who you are. And that's the secret to getting not only short term weight loss results, but long term ones, which is what you truly want.
