Program Yourself Thin Live 5-19-26

Jim Katsoulis argues that framing weight loss around "want" instead of "should" activates real motivation. He walks through building multi-dimensional desires (physical, mental, emotional, relational) into a 24-hour mental game, then answers audience questions on thyroid issues, diet approaches, and why gym-only advice fails.

Hey everyone, welcome to today's program, Yourself Thin podcast. Today we're talking about the magic weight loss word. This word is so important and you need to put it at the core of all of your weight loss goals and communications to yourself and to other people. And once you start using this word, I think that it unlocks a whole nother level of motivation and excitement to get the weight loss results you're looking for. And I find most people don't really use this, not the way that they should. So let's kind of get into it. So what is the word? The word is want. Want. I want to lose weight. I want to be thin and healthy. I want to eat better. I want to feel better. I want to look better. I want a better life. I want to be a better version of me. Whatever it is you put after is up to you, but start using the word want instead of the word I need to, I have to, I should. Those words disconnect you from your power and the word want connects you to it because things that we want are the things that we're most motivated to get. And when it comes to weight, a lot of times we block the wanting with all this should, need to, and have to stuff. And when we have to do something, when we need to do something, when we should do something, subconsciously, that's something that we're kind of resisting doing. You never say, oh, I have to get an ice cream. I should get an ice cream. I need to get an ice cream. You say, I want to get an ice cream. So the things that in your life produce the most motivation and forward momentum are the things that you want. And so it's up to you to start framing your weight loss goals in terms of what you want. Now, that's the first step. The second step is to want lots and lots of things. There's no limit to this. So I want you to go wild with what you want. I want you to dive into the details of exactly what you want and why. And the more you start to live in that reality of what you want and why in granular detail, the more you start to create the programming and the reality for yourself that creates the goals that you want to achieve. So we're not just going to say, I want to lose weight. It's better than saying I need to lose weight, should or have to lose weight, but it's not the best. What we want to do is we want to go deeper into that. I want to lose weight because I want to feel better. I want to be lighter. I want to be more active. I want to go on more adventures. I want to look better in pictures. I want to wear a size dress that I feel really good and confident in. Put it in. I want— and you just keep drilling down. But you can't just say, I want to lose weight. That doesn't have a lot of oomph either. We got to go deeper into it. And this becomes a game you can play literally 24 hours a day. What do you want and why? That's the game. And you just keep focusing and articulating and concentrating and tweaking and optimizing and getting more detailed about what exactly you want and why. What do you want physically? What do you want mentally? What do you want emotionally? What do you want in your relationships? What kind of personal life do you want to have? What kind of professional life do you want to have? What kind of energy you want to have, right? You can just go in every direction, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep. And the more you do this, the more you start to create this narrative of why you want this. Now, by the way, this works because this is what's driving into the food. The commercials do this for you. Every single commercial you see is just diving into every little element of what makes that food seem good. And it reminds you of it, reinforces it, and you keep focusing on all the little details of the food, reminding you constantly, thinking in that world. And it creates a want, a craving, and a desire that compels you to go get it naturally. Well, the exact same thing works on the other side. So the more clear and specific you get about what it is that you want, the more you connect into that feeling, the more you start to unleash your natural motivation and ability to move in that direction. So start thinking about what you want and start thinking about it often and in vivid, vivid, very defined detail. And then you'll be surprised at how much more motivated and easier it can be for you to get the results you're looking for. And if you want to kickstart with this process, click the link in my bio or go to programyourselfthin.com. Go get the free hypnosis session I make for— it's called The New Thin Me. It's literally designed to help you do this, to help you connect to and clarify exactly what it is that you want to achieve so that you feel pulled towards it, so you feel compelled to achieve it. This is a much different reality than most dieters who feel like they have to force themselves to do the right things. So go get that free hypnosis session again. It's at program yourself thin, um, or you can just click the link in my bio. If you are, uh, in TikTok, you just click my picture on the top left. If you are in YouTube or Facebook. I will put the link in the chat window, and if you have any questions about weight, please feel free to ask them. That's what I'm here for, to try and help out as many people as possible, um, get a better approach to managing their weight. So if you have any questions, feel free to ask them, and I hope you're all having a nice day because it is hot times over— oh my goodness, the live contains themes that some may find uncomfortable, huh? Um, XCLS says, what you say doesn't do anything, you need to go to the gym. Um, yeah, that's dumb shit, and I'm glad that person wrote that because I always love, um, talking about why that shit's so stupid. Um, the idea that you should just go to the gym, you just eat better, you just need a diet— these simplistic, simpleton answers to complex problems are the reason why most people are stuck with their weight. And if managing your weight or managing your health was as easy as just go to the gym, then we wouldn't have 75% of the American adult population overweight or obese. So when you hear dipshits saying simplistic answers to complex problems, make sure that you let them know that it's a dipshit response to a complex answer and it's not going to work. To give you context in a different example, it's kind of like the— in the '80s when Nancy Reagan used to say, just say no to drugs. Well, it's simple to say, but it's not very useful in practical situations, which is why we don't have Just Say No centers in 2026, because that simplistic, simpleton answer doesn't work for a complex problem. So always remember that, folks, that there is no simpleton one-step answer to fixing your weight. It is a comprehensive issue. And I would imagine, at least in my world, you need a comprehensive approach to it. And part of that comprehensive approach, which again, Excel XLS, because they just go to the gym like a dipshit. Um, but I believe that you're gonna need a more robust solution than just the advice to go to the gym. I think you're gonna have to work on your mindset, your lifestyle, and your eating, and dial it in so that it's working for you, so that not only can you get to your goal weight, but you can stay there. I would think that that's going to be a much— that's going to do a lot more for you than someone just saying go to the gym. So don't feel guilty if you have felt bad for yourself because you believe that just going to the gym is going to fix this, because Uh, it's not, it's not going to fix it because the main issue is really a mindset one. And it's probably going to take more than just the gym. Uh, Barefoot Contessa says, I've cut out sugar and carbs and I've lost 12 kilograms in 5 months, no gym. All right, there you go, Barefoot Contessa. And that's just another piece of it that you don't even need to go to the gym to lose weight. So not only is that a stupid thing to write, um, which I don't mind people writing dumb stuff, by the way, I appreciate it because it allows me to kind of call it out. But I want you all to see that I'm not just letting that land because for a lot of dieters, unfortunately, they'll hear some dipshit say something like, oh, this mindset is so stupid, just go to the gym. And then they'll feel guilty because they'll feel like, oh my God, they're right. It's so easy. I should just get myself to go to the gym. No, it's not that easy. There's a whole lot going on there. And if you believe that idea that you just need to go to the gym or you just need to eat better, it's— that's a simpleton answer. It's not going to work for the vast majority of people. And it probably isn't going to work for you. Not because you lack willpower, not because there's anything wrong with you, because it's not the right answer to the problem. So I appreciate you sharing that, Barefoot, and great job cutting out sugar and carbs. And again, you don't even need to cut them out completely. You can reduce them and get results. So again, the weight loss industry is full of people giving you simplistic, um, abstinence-based answers, and they're not helpful. So make sure you realize that. But nice job, Barefoot Contessa, I'm proud of you. Uh, Karam says, I have hypothyroidism, is— so is there a different approach to weight loss? I tried many things, um, but I'm assuming nothing's really working. Okay, but yeah, well, yeah, this works for hypothyroidism. I've worked with literally everything— Hashimoto's, insulin resistance, thyroid issues, all of it, menopause. All of these things are real, they're real physical challenges, and they present differently in different people. But at the end of the day, the way to drop the weight is always the same— that you're going to reduce your average calorie consumption. Okay, so how you do that is up to you, but I would suggest that you take a multi-pronged approach to it, that you don't just give yourself a meal plan to cut the calories down, but that you take a holistic approach where you work on transforming your mindset, your lifestyle, and your eating so that you're able to think, live, and eat like a thin, healthy person. So I think there should be more than just cutting calories. So for you, Karam, again, the answer is the same. The way you're going to lose weight is the same. Everyone's going to lose weight. You— it may be a little slower for you. You may have a slightly different path up the mountain, but at the end of the day, it's the same process that you're dialing down the calories. That's the main thing you're going to do consistently. Okay. So again, if you have hypothyroidism, you, you more than the average person, most likely will need to extend your time frame. So what you may define as not working may more accurately be described as not working yet. And so you may need to have a longer time frame than the average person because of that. But at the end of the day, it's the same process. You may just need to bring a bit more patience into it because of that. Um, it says, if someone has an irregular menstrual cycle, does the process of losing weight change? I don't know the process. I don't think the process will change so much as the time frame may change, right? The experience may change. But again, even if you have irregular menstrual cycles, you can absolutely change your weight, right? It may take you a little bit longer because that may be a factor that impacts things— your hunger, your moods, your energy, your metabolism, right? There's factors that could be there. But at the end of the day, it really comes down to reducing your average calorie consumption. And the irregular menstrual cycles are really just one piece of that, right? So I would start by recognizing these irregular menstrual cycles. I would start to just kind of track them a little bit, just don't know, is there any pattern there? Are they just completely irregular? That's the first thing I want to notice. The next thing I want to notice is how it affects me. How is it affecting me mentally, emotionally, physically? What are the impacts of it? Does it make me hungrier? Does it make me tired? Or does it make me crankier? Does it make me happier? Whatever. Start to notice some of the, the patterns mentally, emotionally, physically that go along with this. And I think understanding those is going to really kind of put a spotlight on why your eating may be impacted by irregular cycles. And again, the more you understand, the more you can strategize for what's going to work for you is the way I think about it. You know, Oh my goodness. Um, Dorothy says, are you a nutritionist? I am not a nutritionist. I am a hypnotist, an NLP trainer, a strategic coach, yoga instructor even, but, um, not a nutritionist. Um, Barefoot Contessa says, I'm eating protein most days, although I worry about the effect on kidneys in the long run. Um, yeah, when people say I'm eating protein, that usually means they're maxing protein. And yeah, I'd be concerned about that too. This whole protein, um, thing we're in right now I think is kind of wild. I think eating this much protein is being pumped down our throats is weird. I don't know. Again, I say this all the time with the protein. Who are we referencing? What society on earth consumes a high protein diet for a long period of time that we can look at and say, yeah, that gets me the results I want. I can't think of one. If you know one, please share with me. I ask this every day. Um, if you're a big protein person, please tell me the, the modern society you're looking at and saying they got amazing results, I want those results. What society you're looking at? It better not be the Inuit Eskimo, and it better not be that tribe out in Africa. What, what society are you looking at that, that lives on a high protein, low carb diet? Because I believe that the healthiest diet for you folks is a high-carb diet, and there's no question about this. You can just look at the Blue Zones. I mean, they literally look on Earth which populations have the highest number of people reaching 100 years old. Pretty good metric for health, I'd say. Okay, they go into those 5 top areas and evaluate what they're doing. Every single one of them, without exception, consists of a high-carb low protein diet. Now the carbs are a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains. So you have to make the distinction between carbs and refined carbs. But again, this idea that protein is this magical substance that's going to fix all your weight issues is bullshit. And, um, yeah, so, so if you're worried about your kidneys and protein and the, the negative effects of too much protein, I feel the same way, and that's why I don't max protein. But we all get to make our own choices. Uh, what's up, Dave? Dave says, I found that small consistent actions every day has helped me. Yes, Dave, I couldn't agree more. Yes, small consistent actions every day has helped me. Yes, that's the only path forward, folks. Dieting has sold you this bullshit idea that you got to change everything in your life in one day. Every diet starts off Monday morning being 100% perfect. That is fantasyland. Nothing in life can you just step into it one day being perfect at it. That is a concept that doesn't even exist. So what we really need to do is, just like Dave said, is we need to really rely on our small consistent actions and then we build on those. That's exactly what we do in Program Yourself Thin. Um, and again, the classic example, this is brushing your teeth. You brush your teeth now pretty much on autopilot. You just do it. You didn't come out of the womb brushing your teeth. You trained yourself to brush your teeth. You train yourself to brush your teeth at certain times. and now you just pretty much do it on autopilot. You're a little bit aware of it, but most of it's just kind of— you just do it. And that's how we want our weight management to be. We want it to feel like it's just what we do. We get up in the morning, we eat that breakfast, we do this thing, we eat this lunch, we do this thing, we eat this dinner. And the way we typically— what we typically— when we typically— all the things we normally do, we're at our goal weight. Because right now you're programmed to be overweight, which is why you just do what you normally do, but you're overweight. So we need to change that equation and change the behaviors, but we need to start small and build on small consistent actions. I've never seen any other path to success personally, not long-term success. Um, but then Dave follows up by saying learn to eat much more protein and less carbs. That part I don't agree with. So we will agree on the first part, disagree with the second part. Barefoot says everything improves when you cut out the sugars. Yes, agreed, agreed. But I'm just going to push back a little bit on that too, because I think that a lot of times dieters always talk in all-or-nothing phrases. And so Barefoot can test— I don't disagree that everything would improve if you cut out the sugars. I— but what I disagree with is that most people are not going to cut out the sugars because that implies zero. Most people aren't going to eat no sugar in their lives, me included. So I would much rather say something like, everything improves when you reduce the sugar, because that's a more accurate statement for what most people are planning to do. Very few people on Earth are planning on living— that, that live in America anyways— are planning on living a life never eating sugar. So I think a lot of dieters set themselves up for failure because they're stuck in that all-or-nothing dynamic, right? It's either I eat all the sugar and I don't pay attention at all, or I eat no sugar, you know. And I think there's a middle ground where you can exist long term, that you can still get results, great results, and it's a lot less stressful. So I don't disagree with you, but I just think that most people don't want to cut out sugar. I bet you don't want to cut out sugar forever. Uh, Dave says, but what does higher carbs do to people with diabetes? Well, I mean, it just depends. I mean, diabetes, different things show up in different people. I mean, you can have two people with diabetes and, you know, they could eat a carrot and have a different response, you know what I mean? So I am not a doctor. Let me just first say that. But, you know, if you have diabetes, you're probably going to find that the carbs in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains may not spike your blood sugar at all. So again, we have to make a distinction between refined carbs like flour and whole natural carbs. They, they ought to be called something different. And again, this is just part of the world we live in because there's a lot of money being made off of selling you protein. There's a lot of money being made off of selling you refined carbs. But you need to make the distinction, folks, please, that whole natural carbs are not refined carbs. We have lived as humans for all of history living off of carbs, whole natural carbs. That's been the primary source of calories for us forever. Protein's great. Please understand, I'm not saying don't eat protein. Please understand that. I'm saying I think protein is over-focused on, and I think they over-promise with protein. And I know for a fact that there's a ton of money that's made off of protein. So I think we get an incomplete story a lot of times with the protein path. And so there's a lot of diabetes— diabetics that do well, um, consuming whole natural carbs. So you got to kind of test and see how your body responds to things, okay? But again, you're gonna have a hard time convincing me that the healthiest diet doesn't include whole natural fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Even if you're diabetic. Uh, what's up, Jackie? Jackie says, down 60 pounds, no gym, controlling amount of carbs eating. Yeah, great job. Again, I'm not— by the way, I'm not going to argue that those of you that focus on your carbs and reducing them will lose weight, because when you consume a lot of refined carbs, you're typically consuming a lot of calories. Refined carbs typically come in high-calorie packages, so it's not so much the carbs That's a factor, don't get me wrong, but it's the calorie content of them a lot of times. This is why whole natural carbs have very low calorie contents. Something like a cookie has very high calorie content, you know, and it's got flour and it's got refined carbs and all the rest of it. All right. So it's, it's important to make that distinction, though, because, again, the diet industry is not on your side, folks. The diet industry is literally there to sabotage you. Literally, the diet industry is just a branch of the food processing industry. So I can't believe TikTok restricted me because they said you could take— what does it say? It contains themes that some might find uncomfortable and has been restricted. Regulated goods and services. Isn't that crazy? They think I'm trying to sell protein powders, but if I was trying to sell protein powders, I wouldn't have that, you know, because again A lot of the internet is making money off of selling protein. What's up, Fran? Fran says, I'm interested in your program. Do you have a 1-to-1 coaching session? I don't have 1-to-1 coaching sessions at the moment, but if I did, they're $25,000 for 3 months is the starting point. So what works for most people, if you do want coaching, and this is actually something brand new, this is the first time I'm saying it. And it's only available if you kind of contact me at the moment. So you won't, you won't get this right away. But what I am doing is opening up a few spaces in my group coaching program. And that's about— that's— you're still going to get to work one-on-one with me, but just in a group. And actually, I think you get a lot more benefit out of that because, A, the price is way lower. You get to learn from other people, you get to be in a group, and you still get to work directly with me. I work with you every week. We work over Zoom. I get to know you, and in a lot of ways it's, it's as effective as one-on-one, if not more so. Um, again, you get a little bit less one-on-one time, but you still get me one-on-one working with you. I've done over 6,000 private weight loss sessions, so, um, it is valuable obviously to be able to work with me. And I've really kind of— I, I, I've reduced a lot of how much I'm coaching at the moment. Um, but, uh, that is something I'm gonna open up, and there's only a couple spots on that. Again, we're We already have people in the group, um, but I'm gonna add a couple more people in there. So yeah, if that's something you're interested in, Fran, um, you can email me at jim@programyourselfthin.com and I can get you set up with that and tell you more about that if you're interested. All right. Um, thanks, Jane. How's it going, Jane? Jim's the best. All right, I'll show that. Who doesn't want to hear that? Um, but yeah, yeah, Fran, we'd love to have you in the program. So yeah, let me know if you have any questions and I can give you some more information on that. So it's going to be fun actually though. I am actually looking forward to, um, I haven't really worked with a lot of new coaching clients. It's been probably like 6 to 8 years. Um, yeah, Fran, email me first though because I don't know your email address. So if you email me at jim@programyourselfthin.com, I can get you, um, get you the information. I'll post this in the chat and you can write to me and I'll get back to you within 24 hours. I just put it in the chat window, but you can send that over to me. And yeah, getting to work with me, I know that's something I've definitely missed. Um, a couple years ago, that's basically what I was doing, is it was a small group and that's what people went into, but there was more coaching sessions. But since then, I've kind of dialed them down a little bit, um, to this one coaching group that I have. But like I said, I'm going to open it up. Um, if you're, if you're already in the program, you're interested, you'll kind of get first dibs at it. And then, Fran, you just kind of hit, hit the moment, you know. If that's something that works out for you, I'll let you get interested to it as well. Um, Jane says, what is the new program you're talking about? Um, Jane, it's just, it's a group coaching, so it's not actually new. It might seem new though because I never promote it, um, because I've had enough people in it and I haven't wanted to add anyone to it. I've actually reduced and compressed into that group, but, um, now a couple spaces have opened up. Things will settle a little bit, so I am going to open up a few spaces to that. And, um, that's a month-to-month program, a month-to-month coaching program. So anyways, you'll get information. If you're in the program, I'll send you some information, probably not even this week. I got a ton of stuff I'm doing. I'm going to start recording the book. Yes, yes, officially tomorrow. Um, we got the book ready to go. Um, so I want to get the audio version done. I got a new presentation I think is going to knock your socks off, folks, and that's going to get recorded hopefully this week. Um, I can't wait. And then, then we'll see what comes next week. I don't know, but, but I'm really excited to get those two things done. It's gonna feel amazing. Oh, I know what's next actually is really Jim AI is getting a refresh and upgrade and get woven into the program more. Jim AI is another aspect to the program that's so amazing and I really kind of undersell that. And, um, that's gonna get kind of a major glow up and, um, is gonna become a much more fundamental part of the program. So, you know, We work as quickly as we can over here, but, uh, you know, that, that'll get going. So I can't wait. Um, but yeah, if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask them. If not, that's okay too. I actually got started a little bit late today. I got a lot of stuff to do. So you know what, I'm going to call it. I'm going to call today's, uh, live. I'm going to get off here before some more— yeah, Jane says, I love Jim AI. Yes, Jim AI is the stuff. Um, and again, uh, you use it now because like I said, once probably starting next week, I'll probably get the Jim AI update going And when that happens, it will, um, it'll be available to members the first 8 weeks in the program. Um, and then it will, it will need a fee. It does cost me a lot to run that thing. So, um, there's a lot of people coming to the program, and that's just something I'm just letting you know. So use it now while it's there. Um, but you will have access to it if you choose to. Again, it'll cost a little bit, but it will still be there. But anyways, um, all right everyone, so thank you so much. If you're not in my world, please click the link in my bio or go to programyourselfthen.com. Um, and I'll put the link in the chat if you want to go get it. Go get that hypnosis session, it's completely free. Um, like I said, I'm putting a training together. There's a training in there now you'll get, but I'm putting a brand one new together. As soon as it's done, you'll get it emailed if you're on my email list. So go do that, takes 5 seconds to get on my email list. Um, and I send you a bunch of other free stuff as well, a lot of cool stuff. Um, if you like this, I'm here every Monday through Friday. So, um, go check it out. And, um, you know, I'm here every, every Monday through Friday around noon Eastern. So pop in here and ask your questions. Uh, if you can't make the lives, it's also a podcast. You can go search and listen anytime you want and, uh, hear it. And, um, yeah, and this book's available. This is my book and it is available, The Tao of Living at Your Goal Weight. So go check that out if you're interested. Yes, Sue says Guru Jim AI helped me last night in my food choices. Yes, Jim AI is— it's amazing. It's literally like working with me. So it's really, really good. Um, what's up, Dandy? How's it going? I saw your emails, Dan. I'm gonna write back to you. I got a little, a little caught up there. Oh, maybe I'll answer this real quick. I agree with your advice about more fiber. I like homemade smoothies with a mix of unsweetened almond milk, coconut water, grapes, carrots, celery, apples, and bananas. It's so refreshing and nourishing, ensuring that I'm not seeking more food due to a lack of essential vitamins. What's your thoughts? Should I have smoothies earlier considering the natural sugars from the fruits? I know you like salads. Um, um, oh, Dandy wants me to go at 1 Eastern. Um, I can't do 1 Eastern, but I, I typically, to be honest, I say noon, but more often than not I'm starting around 12:30 and then I pretty much go an hour most days. So I'm almost always here between 1 and 1:30 anyways. I think I'm more accurately here about quarter past 1 to 1:30-ish. So I'm still here for those. Um, yeah, I love that plan, Dandy. I did, uh, I did smoothies for years. So before I did salads, I did smoothies for years and, um, they served me very well. I went with the salads because I just felt like it was just one more step closer to natural because I was chewing everything and all that. So I drank my smoothies early in the morning. I agree, the sugars of the fruit and all the rest of it— I found what worked best for me was having the smoothies. That was my breakfast. That was part of it. I'd have a smoothie, I'd have Ezekiel toast with peanut butter, and that would, that would last me a while. I'd feel really good from that. I have switched the smoothies and I've converted that over to a salad at lunch. But again, what I would suggest, Andy, that sounds like a great Um, what I would add— I'm just going to say what I would add because when I, I had smoothies that were similar to yours, I never used almond milk. I used just water. My smoothies were banana, half an apple maybe, carrot, spinach or kale, one or the other. Um, What else? Water. I feel like I'm forgetting something else, but that was kind of my smoothie. So one thing I would suggest adding, Dandy, is maybe like a green, a spinach or a kale to that. I'd like to get a little greens in my body too, but I think it sounds great. I would look to reduce the almond milk, you know, a little bit. Um, and the rest of it sounds pretty good, but I'd probably add some greens in there. Everything else sounds, sounds good to me. And then test it out, you know, try it in the morning, see how you feel there. Try it a little bit later if you're thinking about a different time, see there, you know. Test them out for a couple days with each schedule and then just notice how you feel. And I think like what, what you notice and what you'll feel will kind of guide you, um, to which things will work best for you. All right, so cool everyone, have a super duper day and we'll talk soon. Bye.
