Program Yourself Thin Live 7-7-26

Jim Katsoulis argues that weight loss isn't about willpower but about fixing upstream problems: sleep, hydration, stress, and meal structure. He promotes building small daily habits that become automatic, using a flexible 60-day email series and hypnosis sessions to reprogram eating patterns.

Hey everyone, welcome to today's Program Yourself Thin podcast. Today we are talking about every eating problem has a solution. I want you to really, really believe this, uh, because if you don't believe it, then it's always going to be a struggle, right? You're always going to feel like you need to fight against your eating problems, your eating challenges. And I'm here to tell you that there's always a solution, no matter how desperate or impossible it may feel in the moment. And it always feels impossible in the moment. But you need to remember that as we grow, as we evolve, as we focus on a challenge or a problem, we tend to understand it from different angles. And if we keep looking for solutions, this is the key. We're going to talk a little bit more of this in a second. But if we keep looking at the problem with a solution-oriented mindset consistently, day after day after day, water on rock, we almost always are going to come up with a solution to the problem. And I think when it comes to dieting, people don't do this. They have their eating problems or challenges and they try and fight against them and they try and fight them for as long as they possibly can until they give up and quit. But please understand that fighting against your challenges versus looking to solve them are two totally different things. And yes, fighting against a problem that's going to be there forever is exhausting and overwhelming and difficult and usually isn't very effective. But when you keep bouncing against something, looking for the answers, looking for the solutions, looking for a better way to do it, looking for how you could improve, what happens is each and every time you get a little bit better. And eventually you get to a place where it feels like I figured it out. I got it. And that's what I want to remind you to focus on is how can I solve this challenge? Now, I'll let you know that when it comes to solving the challenges, usually the answer is not just in that challenge moment. Okay. So a lot of people say, well, my main issue is I'm binge or I'll overeat. Okay. And what they're looking for as an answer is how do I summon the willpower in that moment to fight against that desire, that behavior. And they either do it or they don't. And then they say, I either succeeded or I failed. But by zooming in just to that moment and giving ourselves kind of a pass/fail, we miss a lot of opportunity to resolve the problem because usually where the problem shows up is not where it was created. So when we focus on solutions, we want to zoom out and look at the bigger picture. Because oftentimes the answer lies upstream, not downstream. And when it comes to weight loss, you've been conditioned your entire life to focus on the downstream problems where the problem shows up and where it's going to go into really, you know, throwing you off track because you have to just summon the willpower. That's the only tool you got. Okay. So I think that it's really, really important that you start zooming out, looking at the bigger picture and asking yourself how you can either avoid the issue to begin with or how you can be in a better position to deal with the challenge when it shows up. So let's just use— we'll use afternoon snacking, evening eating, right? They're kind of similar in a sense. We can use either one of those. And again, we don't want to just say I either have the willpower in that moment to make the right choice or not. We want to start saying, how can I set myself up to get into the afternoon, to get into the evening in the most grounded, successful way possible? How can I get myself to show up in that situation so I can encourage my best performance? Right. It's fun to kind of look at it that way sometimes. And once you do, Again, usually where those answers come from are before the moment happens. You know, it's just like if you play a sport, the, the answer isn't to just play harder in the game. That's part of it. The bigger answer is to practice before the game. And so that's what I mean. We want to have a shift our mindset. So we're not just basing everything around having amazing willpower in the moment, but we start asking ourselves, how could I set myself up for success? And once you start thinking that, all sorts of other things pop into your awareness that you can begin to change. So if you're dealing with afternoon or evening snacking or bingeing, maybe what happens before that is how's your sleep? How's your hydration? Did you nourish yourself and eat enough during the day? Um, have you managed your stress in a more effective way? Go for a walk, um, read a book, do something that puts you at ease, that calms you down. And maybe if you do those things before the afternoon or evening binge shows up, Maybe if you do those things, then all of a sudden when it's time for the afternoon or the evening, you're approaching that situation from a different place, right? You're, you're much more grounded. You're much more ready to handle that challenge. Okay. And that's how I want you to think, because if you approach it that way of seeing the big picture and what's going to help you when you get to that moment and you start to focus on how can I improve Again, in Program Yourself Thin, we build around the 1% better a day. And it's the same thing here. It's not just about, I'm never going to eat ice cream at night again. It becomes, how can I make a better decision at night? How can I do something else? And it's about defining what the goal is, defining the new behavior, practicing it, making it automatic. And if each and every day you're focused on making one small little improvement towards that bigger goal, what happens is you're not just doing this pass/fail thing anymore. Where you just magically show up with this amazing willpower and say no. Instead, you've got kind of a system under you, a system of behaviors, a system of thought underneath that moment that allows you to step into that moment and sometimes just completely prevent it and nullify it completely. And/or at least we show up in the situation more prepared, better, you know, energized, focused, motivated in order to handle it. So hope this helps you out. Um, but again, if you want to go deeper into this way of thinking, click the link in my bio and go to, or go to programyourselfthen.com and go get the free hypnosis session that I made for you. Uh, it is there to help you and to do exactly what we're talking about here, to be able to approach these things in a different way so you get better results. All right. Um, so yeah, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them and, uh, Yeah, I hope you're all having a nice day. How's it going, Kevin from Lake— Lakeland, Florida? But if anyone's got any questions, feel free to ask them. I know we got a different video setup here. It's straight on again. That might be the way we do it. Um, but yeah, testing it out because I'm trying to get my camera to focus better. That was one of my big things. I'm still working on it because I don't know if this has worked, but let's find out. Actually, what do I do to change this? Let me see real quick. I'm gonna test this out and see if it's worked. I did change a few things, but I don't know. I don't know why this would fix it. And I would— oh, look at that! Maybe it did. Maybe the lighting's better. Maybe that's why I wanted to get this to go on this, get this to focus in better. There we go. That is doing better. Oh, we'll see. We'll see. Anyways, yes. What's up, Connie? How's it going? Connie from Alabama. Alabama. I cannot even imagine being in Alabama. It is not even that hot here in Massachusetts, but it was the last couple days, and oh my God, it was, uh, so hot. Today it's not that hot, but it's, it's raining, so it's like, it's all muggy as all get out. The humidity is just something else. Uh, Fran says, hi Jim, your program is so good and it works, but I can't seem to get started. Um, yeah, well, what's going on, Fran? You know, sometimes it's the smallest little step that you got to take first. Um, Uh, so again, sometimes getting things going in the beginning is the challenging part, right? I guess that's probably true, right? That the hardest part is to start. I would agree with that. In yoga, one of my favorite phrases ever is that the hardest posture is getting on your mat, you know? So sometimes getting started is the tough one. So, um, what I'd suggest, Fran, again, is, is can you get yourself to listen to the 5-minute hypnosis session in the morning? That's where I'd start. Um, yes, no, whatever. You can go into the blueprint and just kind of look around with it. So What I'm saying is don't think about it as starting like this big journey. Okay. Don't, don't, don't kind of put all this pressure on yourself. You can think of it as a journey, but it's a journey of a thousand steps too. Um, so don't overwhelm yourself with what you have to do. Just engage with the program. So depending on how much time you have, uh, if you've got, you know, if you got a half hour, go watch the Program Yourself Thin technique training, because then you can start using that immediately. And once you start using that, it only takes 60 seconds at a time. Okay. Um, but it's, uh, you know, again, pick something small and just engage with it, Fran. You got this program for your whole life. So there's no rush with Program Yourself Then. Um, and I think that's an important piece. You know, I think with Program Yourself Then, you, you have it for a lifetime. You can restart it 100 times. So I do that very intentionally because I want to take the pressure off of you. I think with weight loss, there's so much pressure all the time, and I think pressure actually gets you worse results. So again, just relax, Fran. This is probably one of your challenges. I'm going to imagine that there's a lot of times you want to start something, you have a hard time starting. It's probably a pattern. And so the opportunity here is to engage with that in a very small way. So you don't have to do the whole program. Okay. You can start off and pick something really small. And, um, uh, that— see how that feels. You know, it might be the thing that just kind of kicks you right over the edge, and then you get right into it. Okay, but just relax, take a breath, and, um, engage with it with a— in a way that feels manageable. All right. Um, so Matt says, appreciate your advices. Well, thank you. That's what I'm here for. Uh, Connie says, best from you lately, losing weight feels so good. Yes, it does. You know Yes. The old idea that it's pleasurable, right? That's, that's kind of always an interesting concept. Uh, Kimberly says, I find eating the same breakfast of Greek yogurt and fruit and same lunch of salad and protein helps me get in the flow. Easy to mindlessly know what I'm eating. Uh, yeah, exactly. Kimberly, I'm a huge fan. I mean, in Program Yourself Thin, a big part of what we're doing is, uh, managing our hunger. And we do that primarily by structuring our eating. And of course, we honor your variety. Everyone has different variety requirements. Some people need a lot more variety than others. We honor that. But at the same time, no matter how much variety you need, you can still structure your eating so that you know when to expect food. You can know when, how much to expect. Um, and once you get that down, it goes a far way towards helping you with your weight because so much of your weight is dictated by dopamine and dopamine. Can be influenced pretty effectively through structure, by structuring how you eat, when you eat, what you eat. And again, you could have, you could have 6 different breakfasts a week. Okay. So variety is not a problem here. You can have all the variety you want, but we want to take 6 different breakfasts a week and we want to know what they are. Okay. So again, we're honoring your variety, but we're also layering over it structure. We don't want to just have a wake up, oh, do I feel like eating today? That is very difficult. It's very difficult to wake up in the morning, just be like, oh, what do I feel like eating today? And then succeed if you want to change your weight. So we want to structure it. So I appreciate you sharing that, Kimberly, because I think that's very, very true. Um, that, and again, everyone's got their variety of requirements. That's one of my super skills is I can eat the same thing day after day, um, and be fine with it. Okay. So, um, I think that it's important that you, um, I think it's important that you structure your eating, you know. I think, uh, if you understand dopamine, the idea of waking up and just being, what do I feel like eating today, is just a recipe for disaster. So anyways, what's up, Fran? Fran says, now I fell Behind on your emails. How do I start from the beginning? Um, yeah. Oh, Fran. Well, I mean, okay. So here's what I would say, Fran. Um, you can start over, just set up a support ticket. If you, if you create a support ticket, which you know how to get to there, right? It's everywhere in the program. Um, just set a support ticket and just say, just start me over. You could start over 100 times. Okay. That being said, if starting is kind of a challenge for you, Fran, I would go a different route. Okay. So first of all, feel free to start over again. Okay. Start over again. But I would suggest another route as well. Once you start over, if you want to do that, which is that you say, you know what, I'm going to let this 60 days play through, though, and my goal is to engage with it as much as I can. So I don't want you to think like there's a starting point and you have to go through every step to get to the end point. That's not really how it's set up. With those daily emails. What's more happening is it's nonlinear. Okay, so I want you to start over again if you want to, but then just say, I'm going to let this run for 60 days and the goal is I'd like to engage with it. Okay. You don't have to have necessarily a goal with it, but if you engage with it 5 times over the next 60 days, great. That's 5 more times than you did. Then you can start again, aim to engage with it 10 times. Then 20 times, then 40 times, then 60 times. Okay. But what I don't want you to do, that's why you start over one more time, start over 100 if you want to, but I'd love to get you out of the loop of thinking you need to start. And I'd love for you to engage with the idea that you already started. You signed up for the program. I know you read something, you've done some things, you've already started. And now it's about notching it up so that you engage a little more, a little more, a little more, a little more, a little more. Okay. You don't get any award if you go through day 1 to 60 all in a row and listen to every single one. There's no, there's no award you get. Um, you know, is it beneficial to do that? Sure. But it's not much more beneficial than listening to 45 days randomly, a couple of days. There's really, it's about getting into the flow and the habit of just touching it. Okay. So don't worry about 1 to 60, everything. That's again, and I should make a bigger point of that. You should get some— there are some emails that come out that talk about don't worry about that, okay? But I know how my people are. I know how I am. We're very— we're kind of perfectionisty, right? We want to do everything the right way. But we're looking to kind of manage that. That's one of the things we're working on in the program. So you engaging it every time over this— so reframe it, right? Not that you have to do 1 through 60 exactly in order, but that you've got the next 60 days and the goal is to engage as much as you can. And again, every improvement on that is going to get better and better. You got it for a lifetime. There's no rush. Engage when you can and just engage as often as possible. These sessions aren't really sequential, so they build on each other in the sense that every day you listen to one, it's beneficial, and then the next day it's beneficial and beneficial. But it's not like this idea builds on this idea and then this idea builds on this idea. You can listen to any of these sessions and any of these mantras can just kind of, they're meant to just be beneficial on their own. Okay. And that's why you can engage with any of the hypnosis, the morning ones or the weekly ones or the library. You can engage with any of those independently. Right. So any session you listen to is going to be valuable. Yes. If you listen to all of them in a row, again, you've just, cause you've listened to 60, 70 hypnosis sessions in 2 months. That's beneficial. It's not the linear nature of it. This is not set up to be linear, even though it says day 1 through 60. So hopefully that helps you out. Yes. All right. Sounds like it is so good, Fran. Yes. And the idea of structure is really key. And so Fran, you can start working on that now. You can start thinking about your structure. Even it doesn't, again, not everything has to start with 100% commitment. Jesus. I, I, that's probably been one of the most important things I've ever learned in my life is that we don't need to start big things with 100% commitment. And I'm telling you the exact opposite thing you hear when it comes to diets, 'cause every diet you start 100%, okay? And so what I'm saying is, no, if you wanna start 100%, great. This is why programming yourself thin's all or something. You wanna do 100%, great. But if you're not gonna do 100%, then let's do 1% at least, and then anything beyond that, right? And so that's the secret, Fran, and you'll feel good about it, okay? Is don't wait to do it perfectly. Do it imperfectly. Just listen to a couple sessions whenever you can. You listen to 2, 3 sessions this week, great. 1, 2 sessions, great. Okay, you're in the game, you're in it, you're already in the program, Fran. You already started it. All right, yeah, Fran says, yes, I'll engage with the sessions. I thought it had to be in order of the sessions. No, it does not, it does not. Um, you can, like I said, they're in— they're all independently beneficial. All right, um, what's up, Zoya? Zoya says, I got hit with depression and food stopped being pleasurable. I lost weight from that, but that's not how I wanted it. How does one reboot messed up hunger cues? Um, I think the way you deal with hunger cues is by, A, eating more whole natural foods. I think whole natural foods help you to kind of reset yourself. All right. Because if you're eating processed food, junk food, fast food, it's always throwing your hunger cues off. I mean, that's what processed fast food does, is it manipulates your hunger cues. So that's the first step, is if I wanna get my hunger cues back on track, first thing I'm doing is I'm adding more whole natural foods into my diet, right? I'm gonna start building around those, and that's gonna physiologically start to ground me. You know, with my hunger cues. The other thing I'm focusing on is my stress, and I'm looking to calm down and relax and manage stress as well, if that's a factor. Now, you said depression, um, so in that case, you know, I'd be looking to manage my mindset, my emotions, um, ground myself, calm myself, be more balanced emotionally. So I would work on those two things in order to deal with the hunger cues. All right., and then I'd move on from there. Okay. But, but that's how I'd start it. And so I, sorry, you got kind of hit with that. That sucks. And it's a challenge. It sounds like maybe you're kind of coming out of it, so I'm happy for you with that. But again, focus on kind of your mental health, probably even first. But again, your mental health is going to be improved with whole natural foods anyways. So in that sense, the, the solution to both the problems is similar. The solution to the depression and the solution to the food cues and the hunger cues is, is similar in the sense that whole natural foods are going to support both of them, right? Um, so work to get some more whole natural foods into your body and see what impact that has on you, because you don't know, probably. Um, yeah, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask them. Any questions are welcome. Back to our— my old setup where I'm right in front of the camera. I don't know, I kind of like this more. I gotta get this camera working better though. That part's true. But yeah, yep, yep, yep. All right, I'll get a quiet group. You know what, that's fine. It's late. I got other stuff to do, so I'm gonna get out of here. But thanks so much, everyone. I appreciate it. I know this is kind of a short one. That's okay too. Um, if you're not in my world, go click the link in my bio or go to programyourselfthin.com and go get the free hypnosis session I made for you. Um, it is really good, I think, uh, and it's completely free. And on top of that, I give you a bunch of other free stuff. I've got a training— that's one of the things I want to go work on is, uh, I have a new training coming out called Reprogrammed. All right, um, the how to live at your goal weight without the fight. I'm super excited if you get that. I think it's really good. Can't wait for you all to get it. It'll be completely free. I will be releasing that hopefully this week, and if not this week, early next week. But once you're on my email list, you will get that, and, um, amongst other things that I give you for free. So, uh, there's that. And if you like this, I'm here every Monday through Monday through Friday at noon Eastern, except for Tuesdays, I'm here at 1. Uh, and, uh, if you can't make the live and you like listening to this, it's also a podcast. So you can go to any podcast platform, search Program Yourself Thin, it'll pop up and you can listen to it. So go check that out. And, um, yeah, then my book's available if, uh, you're looking to get a good book about how to live at your goal weight. This is the one. Might be the only book about how to live at your goal weight. But that's available on Amazon. Go check it out. All right, everyone, have a super duper day. We'll talk soon. Bye.
