Program Yourself Thin Live 8-21-26

Jim Katsoulis teaches his Program Yourself Thin system, a mental approach that uses "younger-self advice" to separate past mistakes from now, and "consequence immersion" to make overeating's fallout vivid. He argues weight loss is a mindset skill, not a diet problem, and offers a free hypnosis session called "The New Thin Me" to reprogram thinking.

Hey everyone, and welcome to today's program, Your Self Thin Podcast. Today we're talking about What would you tell your younger self about how to lose weight? I love this question so much that it's literally one of the cornerstone pieces of the entire Program Yourself Then approach, is that we look back at the mistakes we've made and we learn from them. But the key thing about asking this question, what would my younger self— now, again, understand, your younger self could be you 2 hours ago. You see what I'm saying? So again, it's from, you know, 2 minutes ago to, you know, 100 years ago. That entire thing is your younger self. And so once we start asking the question, what would my young— what guidance would I give my younger self? Instantly, psychologically, we break from our younger self. This is really important because a lot of times what we do is we say, why did I eat that extra ice cream? And what we're doing there is we are combining, we are unifying our younger self with our older self, but we're primarily thinking of ourselves as our younger self. Does this make sense? So it's like, um, a lot of times what happens when we think about the past is we age regress back into that perspective. So for example, if you think about, you know, a playground you used to go to when you were 10 years old, when you think about that playground, you're going to imagine it from the perspective of your 10-year-old self. Okay, as a clear example of this. So when it comes to food, a lot of times we're saying, why did I eat that way? We're thinking about the version of ourselves that was really hungry, really tired, really emotionally activated. And we were in a place where we didn't care what we ate and we just ate everything. And we're thinking of ourselves as that version of ourselves. When we ask what guidance, what advice would I give my younger self, we're instantly separating the past from now. This is a very important process to encourage because what it does is it starts to split you from when you were younger or when you were in a situation where you weren't at your best perhaps. And now you're more calm, relaxed, more connected to your wisdom, all the rest of it. And now you can look back at that and hopefully come up with some better ideas. So there's kind of 2 benefits you get out of doing this. Number one is that you separate yourself from that person that made the mistake. And number 2 is you see the mistake from a more calm, grounded perspective. This is really, really important because I can almost guarantee you, as a dieter, you have been trapped in a diet loop. And every time you think about the mistakes you make, you think about them as you now. And you are stuck in a never-ending identity of someone who struggles with their eating, struggles with their food choices, struggles with their weight. You never get to separate from that person. You never get to rise above that person or separate and see that version of you from a different angle. But if you realize that at the times in your life when you make then healthier food choices versus times in your life when you're calm, grounded, relaxed, and at peace, it's kind of like there's 2 different versions of you. And so in programming yourself, then a huge part of what we do is we use That calm, grounded, wise version of you to inform the other parts, so that when you make a mistake, instead of saying, "God, what's wrong with me? Why do I keep doing this? Why do I keep screwing up? Why do I always mess up?" We say, "If I could go back in time knowing what I know now, what advice, what strategies, what mindset tools would I have used that I didn't?" Now all of a sudden, obviously right off the bat, you're solution-oriented now. and you're thinking about what you want to do and how you're gonna do it. But now you're also thinking about that from a calm, grounded space where you have access to more of your intellectual and cognitive resources. And so now you can go back to the ice cream you ate and say, well, I would've gotten half as much. Back to the sandwich that you didn't wanna order and say, you know, I would've ordered the salad instead. I would've relaxed, calmed down, reminded myself that I got a big dinner coming tonight and I just wanna get a salad to get through the rest of the day. Whatever you may have said, again, what you say is almost irrelevant. The process of doing this continually is what creates the results and the big effects. So begin asking yourself the question, what advice would I give myself if I could go back in time knowing what I know now? What would I have done differently? And if you continually do this with your mistakes, quickly what you're going to find out is that you start to come up with better strategies, better ideas for how to act the way you want to so that you get the results you want to get. And if you want some support making this happen, click the link in my bio and go get the free hypnosis session that I give you. It's completely free, so go check that out. If you're on Facebook or YouTube, I'll put that link right in the chat window there. Go check it out. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask them. You're here on a Friday. Beautiful Friday, and oh man, it is beautiful out. It is the the perfect day. User 676 says, "Work out no matter what, even if you continue to eat too much." Yep, sure. Yeah, if you're working out, you know, keep doing it. But I always say, I mean again, and I think it's important to state, I think working out is great for a lot of reasons. Weight loss typically isn't one of them. Weight loss really is not associated. Exercise is not really associated with losing weight. So, um, I just want to remind you again, if you work out a lot, keep working out if you want to lose weight. But if you don't work out and you want to lose weight, I would suggest you do not start working out first. I think you'll get much more benefit from focusing on your food. Um, but yeah, even when you're feeling down, if you keep going with whatever it is your goals are, keep doing that. Um, Stars to Bright says, wow, incredible. I did this last night. Horrible day, tired, hungry at Olive Garden. Uh-oh. Yep, that's a bad recipe. Afterwards felt bloated, sluggish, and regretful. That was the full uncomfortable version afterwards. Yes, yes, exactly. That's wonderful. So yeah, that's what we want to do. Again, we want to connect to the consequences. See, this is the— it's subtlety, right? There's little subtle things going on here. We're always going to make mistakes. Okay, so, so right off the bat, and program yourself then, we're not trying to never make a mistake. We know we're going to make mistakes sometimes. We're okay with that. We want to be able to have a strategy in place for when we make the mistake, though. All right. And so once we make a mistake, we want to utilize it in 2 ways. So we eat too much, we choose the wrong food. We really want to use that mistake in 2 key ways. Number one, we want to step into the consequence of it genuinely. And what this means is 5 minutes after you make the bad food choice, 5 minutes after you overeat the food, You start to feel bad because now the food's gone, and now you're just left with the consequence. That's when the consequence phase starts, and there's a physical, mental, and emotional consequence to when you eat too much, to when you make the wrong food choices. And so when you do that, we don't want to beat ourselves up. We want to just exist with the consequences. What are the consequences when I eat too much? What are the consequences when I choose the processed fast food junk food? And if you start paying attention to that, what happens is. You start realizing there's a lot more consequences than you realized, far beyond just the extra weight. And most of them are actually nonphysical. So a lot of them are mental and emotional. You'll notice if you pay attention, if you're someone who wants to lose weight, as soon as you get done with an eating choice that you don't want to make. So you can choose the wrong thing, eat too much. The second you finish eating, the mental piece starts kicking in. You start talking to yourself very negatively. You start beating yourself up. That leads to negative emotions of guilt, shame, frustration, anger, hopelessness. And then there's the physical effects sometimes where you feel sluggish and bloated and full as well. But when you connect to those feelings and they're there every single time, this is a truth of life that when you overeat, when you make unhealthy food choices, as soon as you're done eating, the consequence phase starts and it's always there. You cannot avoid it. You can't avoid it, and so we just want to steep ourselves in it without beating ourselves up. We just be aware of what the natural cause effect is of making that choice. That's number one, and then number two is again, as we get away from that, you know, I always suggest let a couple hours go so you start to feel back to normal. Then ask the magical question: Knowing what I know now, if I go back in time, knowing what I know now, and I could have been more relaxed, more calm, more motivated. What would I have done differently? And what that does is it allows you to recognize the situation, all the subtleties that were involved, and it allows you to kind of create strategies, mindset and strategic behavioral strategies for how to deal with that. And if you do this consistently day after day, what happens is you develop the skill and the neuroassociations, because every time you steep yourself in the consequence, you're creating stronger associations. Because right now you associate the junk food, the fast food, the eating too much with pleasure. But if you really stick with the consequence, you're going to realize that once the eating's over, it's not pleasure, it's pain. The way you're eating is one of the biggest sources of pain in your life. And so that's not me bullshitting you. That is an absolute fact. And when you start to associate that in, you now get the double kind of benefit of new associations that support you. And a mindset that knows what to do in those situations. And again, if you do this over and over and over again, what happens is you start to gain the skill, the ability, the strategies and mindset of being a thin, healthy, happy person. And your biggest weight loss issue right now is that you do not have those strategies, skills, and mindset at this moment. The problem is not that you don't have a plan to follow. That's not your problem. The problem is never at this point in 2026. It's never a matter of not having the plan. You have tried probably dozens or hundreds of plans at this point. It's not about the plan. It's about the mindset. It's about the strategy you're going to use in your particular situations that you find yourself in. And that is the secret, I believe. You know, to getting control or influence over your weight at a much higher level. It's a skill thing. It's a skill thing, and most dieters unfortunately never learn how to develop those skills because again, dieting is not there to help you. Dieting is there. I mean, yeah, I guess to say it's to hurt you. You know, it's certainly there to make more money for themselves. So yeah, if you've wondered why you've struggled to lose weight, I can let you know that the core reason is because. You have never learned the proper way to live at your goal weight. What's up, Vicky? How's it going? How's it going, Connie? Connie says, and once we get calm, we can dive deeply into the stories we tell ourselves that are no longer relevant. Yeah. Again, Connie's a superstar. Been under goal weight for 11 years now at this point. So whoops. So yeah, so she knows what she's talking about, and I think that's exactly right. That the quieter you get inside, the more aware you get of side. You get inside of what's going on in here, the more you start to figure out and handle. You know, for most people, because again, dieting is an external-only focus, right? I mean, every single diet or exercise plan, every single weight loss plan to that point, and again, obviously injections and surgery aren't aren't that, right? We're talking about you know things you would do on your own with with what you got going on. But every single thing you've ever tried weight loss-wise, someone says here's here's your plan, follow it. You know, and and so diets by their nature are really fixated on the external. They're focused on the calories, the eating plan, the exercise plan, and then even beyond that, the idea is that you're going to lose the weight and then you're just going to become the person you want to be. But I believe that weight management is really an inside out job, and so I think starting to focus on what's going on in here. First leads to much better results outside. And again, Connie's kind of put it in a good way. I think that when you do quiet kind of the storm in here, you just become a lot more aware of what you say to yourself, the stories you tell yourself, the things you believe that there are so many that are not true or accurate or relevant anymore. And I think every human does this, you know, and it's like, I think you have to actively work through it. I think we all store up so many limiting beliefs and outdated stories, you know, that we believe. And we need to kind of clean out our mental closet to some degree. But the only way I think that I know that you can do it begins by calming down, quieting in here a little bit, becoming aware of what's going on inside of you mentally, emotionally, energetically, physically. And when you start to have a a better sense of what's happening within you as you're more sensitive to it, I think that naturally kind of moves you forward in a healthier way. I've seen it over and over and over again. I mean, you still gotta, you know, there's still like the, the tactical strategic side of weight loss as well, obviously. Um, but I think one of the biggest missing pieces is the internal piece of it. We call it mindset. Um, but it's also beyond that. And, um, you know, again, that's a big part of programming yourself then because we use the hypnosis almost as meditation as well, where when you listen to these hypnosis sessions, you're not just getting really good suggestions put into your mind, you're also putting yourself into a state of peaceful calm. I think a lot of people overlook that hypnosis and meditation are very similar brainwave pattern-wise. So when you go into hypnosis, again, you're really getting 2 big, big, big benefits. Number one is, again, you're getting these good ideas put into your mind that weren't there. But I think what's almost even more important is that every time you go into hypnosis, you're going into a meditative, calm, peaceful, grounded state physically, mentally, emotionally. And that's why in Program Yourself, then we start every morning with the 5 minutes, and ideally you want to end it with a 10-minute session at the end of the day. And you're bookending your day with that calm, peaceful you. And eventually it starts to become the norm. Eventually that starts to become how you think of yourself. So that's just another way to approach it. But yeah, if you have any questions about weight, feel free to ask them. Anything you're doing— again, I've worked with people with all different, um, plans. So again, I want to make clear that, uh, you know, this isn't just mindset. This isn't just program yourself. Then I worked with people who've done every diet on the planet, and you know again, I usually think that you're always going to need something more than just a diet. I don't see any diet out there that gives you any sort of real good chance of living at your goal weight. I don't know. Do you? Do you all? What do you all think? What do you all think is the best diet out there? You know now what you'll probably think of is the thing that's worked best for you, and then when you really think about that, you'll realize it's the thing that worked best for me for a little while. And most likely you've never had anything that works really well for you long term, like a complete and total absence, not even, not even an idea in our mind of something that could be long term. Most the time when people think about diets, it is, um, it's just this thing they're gonna force themselves to do for a little while until they can't do it anymore. And that's not a great strategy if your goal is to live at your goal weight. And I'm gonna assume it is. Yeah, Carolyn says love the hypnosis. Yes, the hypnosis is great. And again, remember folks, you can get the hypnosis. I give you a free one. Oh, it's called The New Thin Me. And, um, you can go to my link in the bio or you can go to Program Yourself Thin and go get that. Um, I give you a bunch of free stuff. And, uh, can't wait. I will have a radio next Monday. The biggest change in Program Yourself Thin history. Boy, I started the week saying it because I thought every day I thought it was gonna be done and Every day there's just more going on than I realized. But we're very much at the end of it. But considering it's Friday, we'll wait till next week to talk about that. If you are in the program, you may notice that the Circle app looks different, but you still have access to the entire program. So again, the Circle app was never part of that lifetime thing that the whole program has. But you have the membership area of access to forever. You can restart the program as many times as you want, so that's still there. Okay, but you will notice that the Circle app looks different, and that is how it's going to look moving forward. So if you have been in the program, you know, if you're currently in it, if you're currently in your eight weeks, your first eight weeks, it'll look pretty much. It'll look a little different, but you'll still have the same stuff there. If you've been through your eight weeks, the Circle app. Will not look like it did, and it will not go back to what it looked like. So that has changed. And yeah, but I'll let you know about some of the changes next week. There are some of the biggest ones ever. I'm so excited. Can't wait till y'all hear it. And I'm excited to share that. But yeah, I think we can get out of here. Actually, I think we'll do a quick one. Don't have too many questions today. So let's just scoot along before we get more people. And so yes, if you're not in my world, click the link in my bio. Go get the free hypnosis session or go to program yourself then. Uh, if you like this, I'm here every Monday through Friday, usually around noon Eastern, to answer your questions. If you can't make the live, it is also a podcast. Program yourself then on any podcast platform. It'll pop up. You can listen anytime you want. And, uh, yeah, have a super weekend and we'll talk soon. Bye.
