Program Yourself Thin Live 8-27-26

Jim Katsoulis explains why our brains drive overeating: ancient wiring built for food scarcity meets modern engineered foods and marketing. He argues you can't change the brain's hardware but can reprogram it through cognitive reframing, stress reduction, and hypnosis, offering a free session called "The New Thin Me" to start.

Hey everyone, welcome to today's Program Yourself Thin podcast. Today we're talking about why your brain wants you to overeat. It's important to understand this so that you feel like you're not broken or something's wrong with you. Uh, the fact that you want to eat all the time is natural and is probably part of the reason why you're here. Let me explain. Uh, part of the reason you're here is because your ancestors ate enough calories to survive to lead to you. And so we have to remember that we evolved in a food-scarce environment, right? There wasn't enough food around. And so most of our bodies and brains have evolved around food because getting enough food in our bodies consistently was one of the main factors of survival throughout history. And so we have a million years of evolving around food and eating as much of it as we can when it's there. because we didn't know if we're going to get more of it. We now find ourselves in a completely alien environment where there's an abundance of food. And not only is there an abundance of food, it's food that has been scientifically engineered to be as addictive and as hyperpalatable and enjoyable as humanly possible. And then on top of that, we live in a culture where we're constantly being bombarded by mental programming and conditioning and commercials to get us to think about it and eat it as much as we possibly can. Okay, but let's go back to the middle thing where most of our mind and body have evolved to focus on food and to be obsessed with it and to nudge us to eat as much as possible while it's there in front of us. And now when we find ourselves in this situation, we're surrounded by food. That old evolutionary wiring doesn't just turn off. It's still there. And this is why you can find yourself thinking about food, eating food, overeating food, and then wanting more of it. We've been doing that for a million years, and it's been adaptive and helpful in a food-scarce environment. But when you find yourself in a food-rich environment, a food-abundant environment, now it starts to have the opposite effect of helping survival to hurting survival. Right now, we live in a country in America where 74% of the population of American adults are overweight or obese. And a big part of it, again, is this drive to want to eat everything in front of us, this evolutionary old drive. That's there. So what do we do? We have 2 options, basically. Number one is we can completely transform our environment. You can go live in the woods, right? Go live in the woods, and all of a sudden that desire to eat everything you see that you can is very valuable again. Okay, so there's option one. You can go live in the woods and get away from all, you know, modern life. That's one option. Second option is that you can get yourself to You can get yourself to change how you think right now. Again, we're never going to change all the wiring that we had, but we can change the way that we think, the way that we respond, how we feel about food. We can absolutely change that. To put it metaphorically, we can't change the hardware, but we can change the software. We can change the software of how we think and how we relate to food so that it's more appropriate for the environment that we now find ourselves in. Yeah. Again, we now live in an alien environment, but we're running our old programming, and so we need to upgrade the programming. How do you do that? Well, there one way you do it is you start to reinforce to yourself that there's plenty of food. It's something you'll never fully believe either, by the way. But if you start to make that a focus that again, God willing, we we keep moving forward and there is an abundance of food. Let let it be known that that's wonderful. Um, but we've got to manage it. But as we start to remind ourselves consistently, there's plenty of food, there's plenty of food, and we do that with a nervous system that's relaxed and calm, we pull ourselves out of stress, put ourselves into a calm, grounded mode, and remind and reinforce that there's plenty of food, there's plenty of— I'm gonna be okay. I don't need to eat everything because I have enough food, and I can eat this here, and if I get hungry, I can have that later. And so what ends up happening is that we start to calm down and relax around food rather than being on high alert every time we see it, which is kind of the natural, normal default. We start to calm down and relax. And this is what we develop and we work on developing in ourselves, is this ability to really kind of ground ourselves in calm, clear thinking that reminds and reinforces that we're now surrounded by food. we can calm down around it. When we're in front of it, we can relax and know that there's more. And the more we start to reinforce that message, the more we start to work around this core challenge that we all have. 'Cause again, the reason all of us are here is 'cause we had ancestors that ate a lot. So that's how we all got here to some degree. So we all have this somewhere in us, but we can also begin to change it effective ways. But we gotta recognize that you're not broken 'cause you wanna eat everything. There's nothing wrong with you. This is a normal, natural thing. That's now been kind of perverted in the environment we live in. And so again, unless you're willing to go live in the woods and completely transform your environment, the next best step is to transform your programming. And one of the best ways to transform your programming is to use hypnosis. And so if you've never used hypnosis or you're interested in this process I'm talking about, go click the link in my bio and go get the free hypnosis session that I made for you. It's called The New Thin Me, and it's kind of your first step To reprogramming the software in your mind so that you can still eat moderately when you're surrounded by food. It's possible, but it starts by being relaxed and calm physically, mentally, and emotionally, and then reminding yourself that there's plenty of food, that we don't live in the past anymore. We live in a new reality, and the more you reinforce that, remind yourself of that, the easier it is to make better food choices because you're not in panic mode subconsciously. You know. That I live in a new reality now, where fortunately and luckily I do have enough food around me. And the more we start to understand that internalize that, the more we take a different approach to food. So go click that link in my bio or go to programyourselfthin.com and go get that free hypnosis session. If you are in Facebook, you can write mind. You can literally just type mind into the comments section, and it will send you a link to go get that. But if you're in Facebook, TikTok, YouTube. You will have to click the link in the my bio there, or go to programyourselfthen.com. Yeah, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them. Any questions are welcome. I'm here every day, Monday through Friday, to talk about your weight and ways that you can manage it more effectively that don't involve dieting. Dieting doesn't work. So what's up, Jane? Jane says, "Hi, won't be here long. My stupid laptop's about to die. The charger is not working properly. Drats! So now I have." I'll have to spend more money. Um, yeah, that sucks, Jane. Sorry to hear that. I hope that the charger is, uh, not too much. And, uh, yeah, that sucks. It sucks when computer issues happen. Um, and speaking of old evolutionary responses, there's something that always is so fascinating to me about, like, technology, uh, because I find, like, when technology is not working right, it just feels like it really elicits such a dramatic response in us. Like unnecessarily, right? It's like all of a sudden your emails aren't working right. It's just like, ah, it's a freakout mode, you know? But I get it, I get it, it's annoying. And I, I, I don't know if I'm remembering this right, Jane, but did— it's a kind of new, a newish, uh, newish laptop, is that right? Um, yeah. I will say one thing for the people on TikTok. I did actually fix the link. Yes, the link's been broken for 2 weeks, um, thanks to yours truly, but it's all working now. So Yes, if you want to get that hypnosis session and you're in TikTok, you can just click the link in my bio now and it'll all work and work as supposed to. What's up, Lorena? How's it going? Yeah, how's it going? Long time no see. Hope you're doing well. Yes, Amy says hi. Yes, got the link today. Very good. Yes, thank you, Amy. And thank you, Amy, so much because you told me that and that was really, that was like a mystery kind of bubbling up. I knew something was wrong and I don't know, I just for whatever, I don't, I cannot believe I didn't go check that, but That's another story. But, uh, I'm glad you helped me to— well, I'm glad you told me that, and that kind of led me to be able to fix it. So it's all working now. Um, and I hope you got it. You got in there, Amy, got the session, got the training. Um, go watch Reprogrammed. Reprogrammed is so good. One of my best trainings I think I've ever done. Um, it's completely free. All that stuff's free. Uh, and then on top of that, PYT Daily, which, uh, that'll be coming out probably next week. It's out now, but, um, that'll automatically go when you opt in, um, starting next week. Uh, just another way for me to support you. Um, Lorena says, I'm on track again, but my problem is how to still lose fat if going, um, out to eat or some celebration. So when I don't know how many K calories are up, yep, these days are when my plan falls apart. Um, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, how's the plan falling apart though, right? Because you're kind of— I'm hearing 2 different things. I'm hearing one is that, um, you know, I don't know what the calories are. and then it falls apart. So what does that mean? That you're overeating, or you're eating and then you find out, whoa, there's way more calories than I thought, or you knew there was a lot of calories and you couldn't stop eating, right? So which, which of those is it, right? Ah, okay, yes. And usually these days starts overeating period. Yes. Um, yeah, so again, everyone's got challenges. You know, we also say that in Program Yourself Thin, that, um, everyone's got like unique challenges. So, so a lot of the process in Program Yourself Thin is built around the idea That the first step is really becoming aware of what you are dealing with specifically. Um, because a lot of times when people want to lose weight, they speak in very general, vague terms about what they're dealing with. And so I'm an emotional eater, I'm an overeater, you know, I love sweets, you know. It's just kind of this big, vague description of it. And the problem there is that if it's really big and vague, you can't really fix it. You're not just gonna stop eating sweets. I'm just going to— I'm not just not going to go to the bakery anymore. You know, like these giant swings at a solution really rarely end up working. And I think the alternate approach is a much more effective one where you start to dial into what your challenges are and get really, really specific with them. And this is why you can't change too many challenges at a time, because you got to understand the challenge first and you got to understand it in detail. You know, Um, and it says, what's the price for Program Yourself Then? Um, yeah, you can get started with Program Yourself Then. It is a membership. Um, Loreen, I thought you were in the program. I thought, I thought you were in the program because there is a special for customers, um, that isn't going to be around forever. So if you want to get in there, you can get in there for a discount if you're a customer. Um, but everyone can get in Program Yourself Then now for a much lower, um, kind of starting point. It's turned into a membership, which I think is going to serve you all a lot better. It's going to let me Create the program the way I really want to, because I have an idea for a lot of kind of different small. I don't want to call them programs, but I'll give you an example. Like Walk Yourself Thin is a program that's going to be in there that I'll have in there in September, and that'll just be part of the membership. You know, and so I have I have a bunch of ideas like this of kind of mini hypnosis series or sessions or little programs that I'll be putting together. But everything will be available to you. In there, and that's what I'm really excited about. So yeah, you can go to programyourselfthin.com, and it's a new. I don't think the new page is up actually, but you should be on my email list. I've been sending some emails out about it, and you'll get more. So anyways, yeah. So it's a monthly program now. It's only sixty seven dollars. So anyone can get in there, and I don't say anyone. I know some people extra stressed out, but most people, if they if this is something they really want to do, it is now accessible. Um, to them. Uh, yes. Yep, Jane's got laptop problems. Yeah, that sucks. That sucks. Yeah, universal chargers. Oh, I hear you. I hear you. Yeah, technology, it's great when it works and it's the most frustrating thing on the planet when it doesn't. It's like that, right? So it's important that, uh, I don't know, you stay calm and relaxed and, uh, work yourself through it. It's so annoying though. I— technology is so triggering. It's, it's on you. It's oddly triggering. I feel like it's just like, it's weird how upset I get about technology, but I do. Uh, yeah, but anyways, any questions about their weight, their eating, any of that stuff, feel free to ask. Um, any questions are welcome. What are we doing right now? I know it's a time, you know, it is funny weight-wise. And I, I say, I guess it's a couple weeks. It's not just one week. That's the difference in August, but August is usually one of the slower, especially the end of August. Ironically, I think people are kind of like just getting ready, you know, to, to kind of get focused and do it. It reminds me a bit of like the week before, um, New Year's, like the week between Christmas and New Year's. I think people are just kind of chilling and doing their thing, and this feels like another week like that. Oh, this year is so weird because we have, um, the way the holiday Labor Day falls like next week, so it's— it feels weird. I don't know, usually it'd be like this week coming up, right? And, um, so that makes the whole schedule feel weird because even my kid went to school today, like he started. I don't know, it's just, it's kind of weird, weird timing feels like this summer. But yeah, anyways, any weight questions, feel free to ask them. If, uh, maybe we'll have quiet— might have a quick, quick quiet call today, which would be all right too, actually. You know what, I'm gonna call it. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it. Let's call it. All right, yeah, let's get out of here. So if you're not in my world, click the link in my bio. If you're on Program Yourself, then hit Mind and, um, go get that session. Uh, and if you like this, I'm here every Monday through Friday, usually around noon Eastern. Um, feel free to pop on here, ask any questions you got. And if you can't make the live, um, you can watch the replay. Uh, it's a podcast, so you can go search Program Yourself on any podcast platform, and, um, then, uh, you'll be able to listen to this anytime you want. And there's Shit, almost 800 episodes as well. So if you find some subject that kind of stands out to you, go check it out, go listen to it. Um, so have a super duper day and we'll talk soon. Bye everyone. Bye.
