The Addictive Quality of Ultra-Processed Food

Transcript of a live Program Yourself Thin podcast episode (host: Jim Katsoulis) discussing how ultra-processed foods are engineered to be addictive, how that rewires cravings, and practical mindset and behavior strategies to reduce their influence. The speaker contrasts ultra-processed “food-stuffs” with traditional foods, outlines a three-phase model (anticipation, consumption, consequence) to reframe eating, and answers listener questions about hypnosis, binge eating, habits, and program resources.

Everyone, welcome to today's program yourself Thin Podcast. Today we're talking about the addictive quality of ultra processed foods. Because if you want to lose weight in 2025, this is something you've got to be aware of because this is something that is new. And I know, I know you know this, I know I'm not telling you something new here, but the difference is I want you to go beyond just knowing it and I want you to feel the adversary that ultra processed food is for you if you want to lose weight. Because what's happened over your life, most likely if you're over 40, 50 years old anyways, is that you started in a relatively normal way of eating with surrounded by relatively normal foods. And over the last 30, 40, 50 years, it's transformed incredibly. And so when you think of ultra processed food, your brain tends to think of processed food you grew up with, but they're completely different and you need to recognize that because they've changed so much. But you don't think of it that way. You again, are still thinking of it as the processed foods that you grew up with, and it's not. And once you realize that and you start to see these ultra processed foods for what they are, I think almost automatically you start to give them more respect because they need it and they deserve it. Uh, just like substances in the real world progressively get more and more potent and powerful and addictive. Well, the food, it's the same thing. But again, what's weird about food is that you subconsciously have this reference point that isn't really that bad. Right? You think of the processed foods we grew up on, they weren't that bad. Now they've totally changed. So you need to really update your map of what these foods are. And I'm going to jump into what these foods are with a little story of how they're created. Because again, subconsciously, we have a reference point of processed foods not really being that bad. And you've got non stop marketing. There has been nonstop marketing, there will continue to be nonstop marketing making you not think about this. And so a lot of times subconsciously, when people look at ultra processed foods, they look at the box, they look at the marketing story and, and they think, oh, this food was created in a kitchen. Bunch of chefs working on things, you know, improving recipes, making it tasty. But really the intensity of the ultra processed food is seen in the intensity of how they create them. These foods are not created in kitchens at first, they're created in labs. As a matter of fact, Ben And Jerry's ice Cream, when they create new flavors. Now, they put people into an FMRI machine and scan their brain in real time while they drip different ice cream solutions into their mouth to see which ones light up the pleasure centers of the brain the most and the most powerfully. And this is what you're up against. It's gone far beyond a recipe, you know, that some chef's grandma had that they've improved on. It's no longer that. And that leads over to the food. The food's no longer food, technically. It's all these chemicals. It's all these concoctions that are put together to create the product that elicits the strongest reaction to it. And again, it gets away with a lot because it's somehow able to be framed as food. It's food. It's not food. It is a substance. And so you want to have the distinction between food and food stuff in your mind. You. You want to start seeing food stuff, ultr. Processed food stuff, as being chemicals, as being a product that is literally designed in labs to get you to respond to it. And when you start to look at it this way, I think you start to realize what you're up against here. This isn't your grandmother's willpower we're talking about. This is a completely different substance. Again, it's like comparing substances in the world that people take to get inebriated. You know, and there's wine and there's fentanyl. Okay? Two completely different things, two completely different responses. And when you start to realize these foods that you may be consuming a lot of, if they're in the ultra processed category, they're literally rewiring your physiology, rewiring your brain to crave them, to desire them, to be addicted to them. And this is what you're truly up against. Now, does that mean you can't succeed? Absolutely not. And we know this because every day people stop using actual inebriating substances. Every day, people step away from the most powerful inebriating substances that exist.
So you can do it with food, but you've got to start with the proper mindset to see it for what it is. Because one of the main reasons you're struggling with food is you're blurring the line between food and food stuff. You are not seeing food stuff for what it is, and. And hence, you're not approaching it and treating it with the respect and the strategy that it absolutely requires. And once you do, once you see these foodstuffs for what they are, you can Start to take it more seriously and more accurately. And yes, to some degree, I believe your weight loss journey is going to have to include some addiction work. I think studying addiction and its other capacities is very helpful when it comes to the food, because the food is not your grandmother's food. It's brand new. We've never been exposed to this much food stuff in our lives. We have no idea what it is. We don't conceptualize, Conceptualize it properly. And it's falling. It's causing us to fall into a trap with it. So the first step is to see it for what it is, realize what it actually does to your body, to your brain, respect it. You can still use it, most likely, but you're going to have to change the way you think about it. You have to change the way that you approach it and interact with it. But once you start to approach it with this new mindset, most of the time you can have these things in your life moderately. But you need to have a clear, healthy explanation, understanding of what it is, because overlooking it is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. And just like you would not be able to really combat a lot of substances with just straight willpower, these foods are just like those substances in the sense that they overwhelm your willpower. So the best way to deal with them is to reduce them, moderate them, sometimes eliminate them, and start to get yourself on a path where your brain and body can heal and feel better so you naturally make better choices. So I hope this helps you out again. You've got to start looking at the food you're eating, and you've got to see the ultra processed foods for what they are. Jennifer says, hi, Jim. Happy summer Monday here in Mass. I've been thinking of the heavily processed stuff as food, cigarettes and food stuff, and I truly no longer have any desire for it. It feels freeing. Yeah, that's great, Jen. I know. It does feel like summer here. Yes. I literally just put the air conditioner on because it is October, but it's like 75 degrees here and it's kind of humid, too, but.
Yes. Well, that's great, Jen. Yes, again, that's what I mean. When it comes to changing how you eat, folks, this is. Again, we're gonna go deeper than dieting. Dieting. You're not changing the way you think about food at all, right? You got the good food and the bad food, and your goal is to not eat the bad food. Eat all the good food. Right? You don't. When you're on a. When you're on a diet, when you're a dieter, you never change how you think about food. You don't change, like your conception of food, how you. The paradigms in which you see food and think about food in. And that is setting you up for so much failure. I can't even begin to tell you, because subconsciously, you all want to eat these foods. You want to eat ice cream, you want to eat the pizza, you want to eat the donuts. And so your weight loss really revolves around your ability to fight against your own desire and craving and program yourself. Then instead of that dumbass process that doesn't work, we go to the source and we change the way we think about foods. We change the way we think about them, which causes us to feel different about them. And when you feel different about them. Okay, so let me put it this way. Most of you, let's just say we'll just pick ice cream, insert it it doesn't matter. Pick cookies, ice cream, pizza, whatever you may have a challenge with. When you think of that food, you have a subconscious response to it. You think of it a certain way, okay? But you have a subconscious response. And let's just keep it real simple. I either want it or I don't want it. But real simple, right? So if I sit here and say, your favorite flavor of ice cream, I want that, okay? I say, your least favorite vegetable, I don't want that. Okay? Now this is all happening in the background. You either have desire for it or no desire for it. Okay? So you think of your favorite foods and you think about it and your desire goes up for it, right? Your craving for it goes up. We can all agree that that's what's going on. Okay? Now, this all happened automatically. You think of ice cream, you think of cookie, you think of pizza. Whatever your favorite food is, you think about it. The way you think about it creates desire. Desire goes up, you crave it, you go get it. So this has been the main challenge, but what you've been doing the whole time is you think about the food. So I'm going to go on a diet. Today's Monday. I'm going to go on a diet. I'm on my diet now. So I think of ice cream craving, desire goes up. I'm expecting that. That's what dieting is. Now I'm going to get my willpower and say, no, no, no, no. Right? And then eventually you let it go a little bit. The craving. Desire doesn't go anywhere, it just stays there. But then it's re triggered again, kind of comes up again. No, no, no. And this is dieting for you. It's forever. Every time you think a certain food, your craving and desire goes up. And you need willpower to fight against that. And the longer you do this process, the longer you go without the ice cream, the longer you go without the cookies, the pizza, whatever. The. The more the desire builds until eventually your willpower can't contain it anymore. So that's your all experience dieting. That's what it feels like. Okay? And program yourself. Then we change the way we think of the food.
So you said, how do I change think about food? Well, I'll give you an example. I will literally show you what I mean. So when you think about your favorite food, it doesn't have to be your absolute favorite food, but think of a food you like. Ice cream, cookies, brownies, chips, whatever. Just think of a food you like and you struggle to not Eat so much. Okay? So think about that food and think about where you like to eat it. Think about how you like to eat it, right? Think about the last time you ate it. Maybe think about where you were, right? What you did. So I want you to imagine how you normally eat that food. Maybe sit on your sofa, maybe sit at the table, maybe you stand at the kitchen, whatever. Think about how you eat that food. Think about your favorite way to eat it, your favorite flavor, your favorite kind of, like, condition of it, right? The best case scenario of eating it. Okay? Now imagine eating it, right? Now imagine eating what it tastes like, what it feels like in your mouth, what it feels like. Look forward to that first bite, how it feels, eating it. All right? Okay. So most likely your craving's gone up, right? Your desire for that food's gone up now because what? Because you're thinking about it in a very specific way now, you don't think it's a specific way. So that's how I always think about it. Okay? Okay. So when it comes to food, we can think about food in three different ways. We can think about the anticipation, the consumption, and the consequence. So in the timeline of food, there's three phases looking forward to it, which builds desire. Consumption, which we enjoy, but also builds desire when we're thinking about it ahead of time and consequence. Now, what's happened to you is in your life, you have been conditioned your entire life to focus on anticipation and consumption of food. So subconsciously, when you think about food, you think about it the exact parts that boost desire up the most. Right? Now, the good news is that, yes, I'm just gonna stick with ice cream again. You can put whatever you want here. I think about ice cream. I think about getting. I think about eating it. My desire goes up. Ice cream, good. But the truth is, everything's good and bad. Okay? No, ice cream's no different. So, yes, ice cream tastes good. I like to eat ice cream. It's enjoyable. To get it. I fun with it. All those things are true. Okay, I hold that here. Here's the part everyone overlooks. No one's been trained to focus on is the consequence phase. We've been conditioned to not focus on that. Every food ad you've seen in your life is the food coming towards you, getting the food. And the first couple bites, never do you see the last bite, the after effect, the sitting on the sofa, the sitting in shame, the feeling guilty, the stepping on the scale, you never get that part. And so your brain just doesn't even think about that when it comes to the food, but it's there. You've just been conditioned not to notice it. So if you start to train your mind to focus on the consequence, what happens is it's just as real and it's just as true. So we're acknowledging that the first part of the food drives up desire and craving and makes us want it. That's the good part. But we have to also acknowledge that there's another part that's there just as much. We just not paid attention to it. It's the consequence. And. And I ask you, that favorite food you were just thinking about six seconds after you take the last bite of it, when you eat it, how do you feel physically, mentally and emotionally? Physically, do you feel energized? Do you feel light? Do you feel healthy? Mentally, are you saying positive and encouraging, supportive things to yourself? You're great. Nice job. Keep it up. We're gonna make it. You can do this. Are you saying negative things to yourself emotionally? Do you feel light, free, happy, successful, confident after you finish that food? Or do you feel frustrated, angry, guilty, ashamed, irritated, hopeless?
Which one? I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I'm asking you to recognize something that's been there your entire life but that you have not paid attention to and have basically made it go away, which is that consequence, not the consequence of gaining weight. Because that's what you try and focus on. See, you look at the immediate excitement of eating the food and you say, well, I shouldn't do that. Immediate excitement, because somewhere down the line I might gain weight. So your brain says, that's too far away. Who gives a shit? Let's just enjoy it now, we'll start our diet tomorrow. We can have both. So the secret is the consequence that follows six seconds after the last bite. That's the secret to changing how you think about food. Because you tell me how you feel six seconds after you finish the pizza, the ice cream, the cupcakes, the cake, the cookies, the takeout, the bakery stuff. Now, again, I'm not saying you can't eat that stuff. Because again, understand, if you ate it moderately, if you had the right amount of it for you, then that's a positive consequence. I'm talking about when you overeat it, when you eat it too much, how do you feel six seconds after that last bite? That consequence is always there. Now, whether you're going to pay attention or not is up to you, but it's right there. And as you start to train your mind to focus on that Consequence. What happens in your mind is it says, yeah, I know ice cream's good, but it's also bad. And the good part is a couple minutes. And the bad part is hours. And today's potentially. And you say, jim, I could never do that. That's weird. How would you ever do that? Well, don't you do this with almost everything else in your life? Wouldn't you like to go on a shopping spree today? Wouldn't you love to just go to the mall and just charge everything to the max and get everything you want?
Maybe. But are you really going to do it? Is there really any risk of you doing that? And there's not. Why? Because you're already doing exactly what we're talking about in your mind. Because you've been trained to focus on the consequence of that shopping decision. And you won't do it because you don't want to have to pay all those bills back. You don't want to put yourself in that financial position. So you will ignore the excitement of what would be a shopping spree for the reality of that consequence. So you already do this with lots of things. You just have never learned to do it with food. And once you start looking at your food and seeing it for what it is and what it does to you, not even with the weight. See, the weight is a trick. It's a trap. All of dieting is a psychological operation meant to confuse you. But that's another story. I'm gonna leave that to the side. But if you can start to look at your food and your food decisions by taking into account at least partly the consequence, that will dramatically change your eating. And that's what's happened with Jen. And what you may not know about Jen is again, Jen has been in the program over a year, I think, now, and been at her Benitor Goldweight for over a year, too. The first time in a long time. And this is why. This is why. Did you understand? She's not fighting cravings all year? She's changed the way she's thinking so she doesn't have the cravings she had. I hope that makes sense. And Jen followed up and reflecting on my whole journey with food, from clean plate club to being a latchkey kid in the connection with processed foods. Do you ever have people write out their journey as a practice? That's a great idea, Jen. I mean, that is a concept. It's called recapitulation, and I think it's a wonderful one. And recapitulation is really just like putting together your past. And I think, I think it's a great exercise to do. I don't think it's necessary, you know, like again, I think a lot of times, like therapy and analysis is too backwards focused. But I do think there's value in writing out your journey. I mean, I talk about my journey constantly and I have recapitulated my whole journey. I recapitulate a lot of my life and my personal development, growth, my eating and health and some other ways too. So I find it's a great practice to.
I don't think it's absolutely necessary. So if you don't like doing it, don't, don't feel like you have to. But I think journaling and I think recapitulating your process is really helpful to help you become more aware of what some of the big transition points were. And I think that encourages you to have more as you move forward. So that's great, Jim. Super job. Natalie says coffee creamer is an odd food that I love, but it is so synthetic it makes me a little sick. I get it, Natalie. And again, it's not about hating it, you know, I mean, that's what I'm trying to say. We're really, I believe, you know, we program yourself, then we're kind of taking a step back and we're just kind of turn the temperature down a little bit. Let's just calm down. Yes, we know that we're eating foods because, see, what happens a lot of times is people will learn about ultra processed foods and they'll look at their creamer and they'll say, oh my God, it's completely synthetic. And so one part of their brain will be saying, don't drink, don't use this anymore. It's completely synthetic. Another part of you needs. It feels like you need it for part of your data to go, right? So this is where in program yourself, then we understand this and we relax. You don't have to get rid of it completely. If you look at it and you see what it does and you want to start to dial it down, that makes sense. You want to go cold turkey, that's an option too, obviously, but you've got options. And so in program yourself, then we follow the three Rs, we reduce, replace, remove. So what I would say to you, Natalie, is that you appreciate, okay, this creamer is so synthetic, I want to start to. I want to have less synthetic in my life and more natural. So let me look for some opportunities to reduce how much I use. Let me look for some replacements that don't. That are more natural and let me, you know, seek to. To remove it at times or. Or completely, you know, but that's a great point, Natalie. But again, relax and calm down because we tend to do. Oh, my God, this is synthetic. We completely get rid of it, but now we don't take into account the subconscious benefit we got out of eating that synthetic thing. We don't do things for no reason, folks. We do things because they help us. We do things for positive reasons, even the negative stuff, even the synthetic creamer. There's a positive thing you're getting out of it. And so usually we got to recognize that positive things replace it with something else and then move forward. Yes, from Grace says, then participation, consumption, consequence. Such a helpful way to be conscious of. Yes, a way to be conscious of the consequence. Yes, it is. You know, and that's so much a program yourself then, is really about retraining our brain to focus on the consequence of the food. It's. Oh, my God, it sounds like a miserable way to live. Well, it is. Absolutely not. Absolutely not. Because when you start making better food choices and you start stringing those together, everything in your life improves like a million times more than. Than eating shitty food. So it's important to remember that. What's up, Vicki? How's it going? Oh, hope you got my email over the weekend. No, oops. I didn't get an email from you, Vicki, over the weekend that I remember seeing. Am I not getting emails or something? Someone else said there, send me an email, and I swear I never saw it. That's you, Karen, if you're here, I looked for your email. I never saw it, so I don't know if you're here. Karen, I've been. I was thinking about you because I'm like, I'll let you know I'm not getting that email. And Vicki, I don't remember getting an email from you.
Unless I just forgot. I get a lot of emails too, though, so it could be me, but I don't. I'm pretty sure. Vicky, I would have remembered your email and I don't remember seeing it.
But. Yeah, if anyone get questions about weight loss, feel free to ask them.
Curveball. You like that? That was such a great exercise. My God. Yeah, it's great, right? I know.
What if you sit here, I was like, struggle. Like, I should be more humble, but.
Like, I am humble. I'm a humble person. But I also know. I'm telling you, man, it's funny. I mean, sometimes you gotta stick with Things I will say. I was having this conversation with someone who's knows a lot of stuff, and we were talking about how weight loss is so challenging. It's such a difficult field to be in. It really is, like I would say. But they were saying, like, how do you pick this? Whatever I said, I didn't pick it, it picked me. And I really feel this way. I can't tell you the number of times in my career I was like, I'm going to do personal development. I'm going to do this other thing. But I always come back to wait. It's just too important to me, you know, it really is a mission for me. I realize that now. But one of the fun things about it is that my path has been so unique. And I'm reading this book now. It's called I'm Back in My Reading. I've taken probably six months off of reading, which I just want to mention real quick, you know, because I talk about habits a lot here. That part of being great with habits is also being able to let them go a little bit, you know? And I know that may sound strange, but when you start getting good with habits, what happens? You start doing a lot of different habits, and sometimes they crowd each other out a little bit, you know? So I find with my reading habit, that's usually pretty solid. That's been solid for years. But then I just hit a period and it's no question I started writing. I started writing a lot more. I'm wrote my. Put this one together first. This thing is so awesome. I love this thing. The Goal weight blueprint. This comes with the program. Well, it. It depends which version you get, but this is part of the program. But then I got another book coming, and that's what I've been working on. So I've definitely found that directly. The more I've worked on my own book, the less I've read because I use that same time to do the other one. But anyways, so I started with this book, Diets, drugs and dopamine. And I think this guy, he's. He was a surgeon general or something. No, he wasn't. He was the head of the fda. Super smart guy, though, you know, but at the same time, I just feel like everyone's take on dieting has been so heavily influenced by the food industry and the diet industry that even people that study it half the times, 90 of the time, miss the most important.
So.
I just. I'm so blessed for my path. It's been so crazy looking back on It. Anyways, enough about me. What's up, John? John says just finished an eight day cruise and the choices were bad, became unglued. That's okay, John, it's no big deal. I mean, again, I mean that's what cruises are for and vacations are for. You get a little lost sometimes. That's what they're for. Okay, it's never a big deal as long as you're able to get back and get back on track. And that getting back on track doesn't happen if instantly, if I'm away for eight days on a cruise, my eating gets just. I got lost at sea with the eating. I'm gonna give myself probably two, three, four weeks to get back on track regular now. No big deal, you know. So eight days of eating everything in sight is again the equivalent of eight days of eating perfectly over the year. Nothing doesn't really matter at all.
So yeah, there's that.
I see Elaine says.
Hi, Jim, I'm very new to your sessions, etc. Is there a weight loss extended hypnosis session? As I just start to relax, then the short session is over. I'm not good at technology, so can you post a link please?
Yeah, I mean what I would suggest is go to, I'd go to like YouTube, go to YouTube, search Jim Kitsulis, YouTube. And I've got a bunch of hypnosis sessions I put up there and they're going to be long enough. I mean I, I put like hour long ones, four hour long ones, eight hour long ones.
So those are just free. I give you more free stuff than anyone and I've got so much free stuff coming out, coming at you. It's coming out your ears. I'm so excited. There's so many things, man, I got to tell you, like I really am. My whole life is changing really. Like I feel this personally, professionally, personally and professionally related. Everything's related, you know. But.
Yeah, it's. I, I've been closing big. This was the first big one. I gotta say, this one here was a big one. And now it's easier not. I just wrote a book. I literally, I'm almost done with this thing like a month, a month from start to finish with a whole book. It's pretty cool and y' all gotta love it. It's really good. But then the next thing coming down the pike is the Circle app for free so that people will be able to get on for free. So even if you're not in the program, I got a bunch of free stuff coming your way. So Again, when I tell you my mission is to help as many people as possible with their goal weight, I mean it. And I got some big things coming this month. They're going to help you do that, so I can't wait. But anyways, yeah, go to YouTube too, and I'm going to put those videos in the Circle app as well. So I'm just kind of finishing up a couple of things to make sure everything's running right and I'll get you in there. But anyways, all, if you're all not in my world, make sure you click the link in my bio or go to program yourself then and go get the free hypnosis session that I made for you. Watch the training video I made for you. I got a bunch of free stuff for you and I got a lot more coming.
Natalie says this is one of the very best podcasts I've ever received. For some reason, so much has clicked for me today. Enjoyed this. Well, you're welcome. Yeah, I do. Every day. I'm just a click machine. That's what I do. I mean literally. Literally. I am a hypnotist and NLP trainer first, a coach second. And so everything I do is really focused on your subconscious mind. Even this podcast. Even this podcast, the way that I'm speaking to you right now really has a dual purpose. Yes, I'm answering questions as logically as I can, but the way I'm communicating consistently is designed to influence your subconscious mind. And this is why I regularly hear people that just listen to podcasts get a lot of positive benefits. Because when you listen to this, you're not just listening to information. I am delivering it in a way that has a chance to impact your subconscious mind very powerfully. And that's true. That's just true. I've been focused in studying and learning and practicing hypnosis and hypnotic communication for over 30 years.
I mean, if you dedicate 30 years to anything, you're gonna get good at it, you know? But thanks, Natalie. I appreciate the feedback. Wilma. Wilma says it's really helping to think of what my thin self would do. Yes, yes, Wilma, exactly. The more we can think about our. Our thin, healthy, happy us, the more we can operate out of that version of us, the better.
And so again, in dieting, it just as long as be the same person, I'm just going to magically just change my behavior and I'm going to look different. You don't just want to look different. I'm here to tell you folks, you think looking different is going to solve everything. I promise you it's not. You don't want to just look different, you want to look different, but you want to think different, you want to feel different, you want to live different, you want to be different. So there's more than just the, the numbers on the scale going down. There's more to this, which is good because once you tap into it, you have more power, more energy, a bigger engine, more horsepower.
Thank you, Wilma. I appreciate that. Keep listening. Judy says hi, I'm new here. Can hypnosis help with binge eating?
Yes. Yes. Now, specifically.
Listen, as any, any good hypnotist worth his salt is gonna be focused there. Salt is going to be focused on words. So can have hypnosis help with binge eating is not really what you mean. I know what you mean. Right. That's a surface level communication. Can hypnosis help with binge eating? But what you really mean is, can it help me stop binge eating? Can it help me have more control over times in the past when I felt out of control and I binge eated.
Binge eated, binge eaten.
But the truth is, Judy, that what you're looking for is the ability to be more calm and grounded, to deal with your emotions in a more genuine way, to manage your hunger, so that binge eating begins to fade from your life naturally and comfortably.
So that you feel more grounded and calm and are able to make decisions that keep you satisfied. And you're eating right on track, the way you want it to go.
Now, what am I saying? Okay, this comes out of one of the hypnotic rules. Two things you need to know about your, your mind, right? You've got a consciousness, subconscious mind. Hypnosis is focused on the subconscious part of your mind. And so your subconscious mind, two real important rules about your subconscious mind. Number one, it does not understand negatives. So if I sit here and tell you, don't think about. Get ready to not think about what I'm about to say. Don't think about a yellow banana. Don't think about a yellow banana. Don't think about a yellow banana. What are you thinking about? Right, so if you come in and say, can you help me with my binge eating. I know what you mean. But as quick as we can, we want to flip that over to a positive because you don't want to not binge eat. Do you understand? Not binge eating is just trying to not think about binge eating is just like trying to think about binge eating. So really what we want to do is we want to start with the problem. We want to go over to the solution. Okay? So the first rule of subconscious mind, it doesn't understand negatives. So when we start with a problem as quick as we can, we want to articulate it in the form of a solution. And the second thing about your subconscious mind is it can't tell the difference between vivid imagination and reality. So if you imagine something, it's going to impact you. It's going to literally change your physiology. How do I know this? Well, because you ever watched a movie, you ever watch a sad movie and feel sad? You ever watch a sporting event and feel adrenaline in your body? Well, why the hell would you be sad or feel adrenaline in your body, or watch a horror movie and feel adrenaline in your body? Everything how weird that is. You're not in danger. You're sitting safely in your home. What are you worried about? But you're reacting as if you're being chased through the woods. And that's the power of your mind. Very, very.
Important power. So what I want to do is someone comes to me and says, can hypnosis help me with binge eating? First thing I want to know is, well, tell me about the binge eating. One specific one. I know, binge eating. When people say that, what they're really talking about is a couple different binge eating patterns that they have in their life. So what are your binge eating patterns? Let's start there. Now, I don't know if Judy's still here, but what Judy may say is, well, okay, sometimes I get home from work and I just keep eating. I say, okay, great. How often does this happen? Four times a week, maybe. Okay, that sounds like a great place to start. And now the first I'm going to say is when you get home, what time you get home? 5:30. Okay. How hungry are you and how do you feel? I'm starving and I feel exhausted. Okay, now we're getting somewhere. Right. And so what happens for most people is they get into this loop where they just have this natural behavior where they get home from work and just eat all night. What I want to do is I want to go into that behavior and figure out what's going on. How do you feel physically, mentally, emotionally? How hungry are you? I'm starving. How do you feel mentally and emotionally? I'm depleted. I'm exhausted. Okay, so from that state of being starving and being depleted and exhausted, you, you're going to make food decisions of a specific nature. Now, most likely you're going to do what you always did. So the real answer in that situation, when you get home starving and overwhelmed and exhausted, the answer is not to not eat. Do you understand? That's what a lot of people do. So I got this binge eating habit, but if we go a little deeper, you start to realize, oh, I'm starving and I'm exhausted. Well, so what do you want to be? If you don't eat, you're going to continue, you're going to be hungrier, you're going to be even more starving and you even more exhausted. So not eating is not a good answer here. So the real solution is not to not binge eat. It's to figure out how to deal with that moment more effectively. Now, I've dealt with this moment for a lot of people and so sometimes they say, well, I get home and I'm just absolutely exhausted. I am hungry, but I'm mostly just exhausted. And I go over to the kitchen, just start eating. And so once I say, okay, when you're exhausted, what else can you do in that moment when you feel exhausted, what else could you do in that moment? And sometimes people say, well, I could take a nap, I could take a 20 minute nap, great. I could go for a walk with my dog, I could lay down in my La Z Boy chair for a half hour and just zone out. I love hearing stuff like that. Why? Because now we're getting to the core of the problem is that you're exhausted. You need to recharge yourself. Now again, everyone recharges themselves differently so that the behavior changes for depending on who you are. But you understand that when someone comes and says, and I'm making up a scenario, but this is a very common one, binge eating, I gotta stop binge eating. Usually what happens when someone says I gotta stop binge eating, there's a bigger issue at play that you don't need to stop binge eating. You need how to resolve your emotional challenges and how to manage your hunger more effectively. Because that's the other one I get is I get home and I'm absolutely starving.
So what do I do? How do I stop eating when I'm starving? And that's where they start the problem. The problem is I get starving and I can't stop myself from binging. Well, in my problem, in that scenario, the binging is not the problem. Do you understand? In my idea, the binging is a symptom of the problem. The problem is you're starving and the binging is a symptom. Of that. So how do we deal with this? Right. Most of you are looking at this level. I have to stop myself from binging, which is another way to say I have to stay starving without eating or without overeating. That sounds impossible to me. So now what I'm doing is I'm going down here and I'm saying, wait a second. How can we prevent yourself from getting so hungry in the first place? I say, what do you eat for breakfast and lunch? Nothing. Well, I said, how? What do you want to eat the rest of the day? Nothing. I want to lose weight. Well, that's short sighted. So let's take a step back. What can you eat for breakfast and lunch that'll be satisfying, nourishing, and set you up so that when dinner time comes, you're not starving? Let's look at it that way. Let's work on that solution.
Hope that helps out. But it's mostly, it's looking at it the bigger, zooming out a bit and looking at it from a different perspective is usually where 90 of my solutions end up. Yeah, Barb loves the no big deal. Yeah, we don't have to freak out every time we make mistakes, folks, you know, Oh, I can't wait for y' all to get to my book. I can't wait. It's hypnotic stories. I don't know if you all know about the Dao de Jingle. The Dao de Jing was a very, very impactful book in my life. I spent years and years and years reading that book. Every night I would do yoga and then I would read passages out of it. And it was very, very impactful on my life and how I live. And so I was very excited to write a book in the style and the style an homage to the Dao de Jing, but it's all about your weight and it's based on the Program Yourself Then system. It's so cool. It's 40 chapters. It goes through the 40 basic components of Program Yourself Then. It's so cool. And it does it in a fun way because it's, it's written in a Taoist, the Dao de Jing, specifically style, but it's also got kind of hypnotic stories. So again, I'm looking to communicate with you in a way that is impactful. I can't wait for you to get this book because I think it's going to change how you think about a lot of stuff. Folks, maybe I'm crazy, but whatever. I can't wait. I can't wait. Lois has started your monthly membership. Nice what is a circle app? Circle app right now is only for people that are in the full program. But. But very quickly that's going to change. So keep an eye on your inbox, Lois, and you'll get information on that. Yeah, check out the YouTube sessions. Yes, yes. Almost wants to be the best version of herself. Learn and improve every day. Yeah, I think that's great. I think that's such a great goal. That's my goal too, is I just want to keep improving, getting better, growing, evolving. That's the fun, you know, And I want to be on that path till my last breath on Earth. I'll be working on something. You know.
Robin says no shutoff valve when eating specific trigger foods. Well, yeah, but no shutoff valve, Robin, I bet you're referencing times when you've eaten those foods and been out of control. My question to you, and I don't know what the answer is, so this isn't a trick question or anything, but my question to you, Robin, who says no shutoff valve when eating specific trigger foods? My first question is, have you ever eaten those foods and shut them off at a moderate point or have you Never? That's my first question. I want to know if this is true or not. Are you just remembering the times when you've been out of control with them, or have there actually been times when you have eaten those specific trigger foods but you've eaten them? Maybe you were calm, maybe you weren't that hungry, maybe you were relaxed. Maybe you just weren't thinking about food much. Maybe you were focused on weight loss. I don't know. But has there ever been a time in your life, Robin, where you ate those foods and you did shut them off?
Yes, I have. All right, well, there we go, right? So right off the bat, we've changed everything. See what I mean? We have these global assumptions we make all the time, right? We say, I have no shut off valve when I eat these trigger foods. So the first thing I'm saying, wait, never have you ever. And come right back and says, yes, I have. I have actually, there have been a couple times. Okay, great. Now I get it. And this is usually more the case that a lot of the time we can't shut it off, but sometimes it might be a few minority of the time, sometimes we are able to shut it off. Okay, this changes the whole conversation. This changes the conversation from I'm broken and I have no shutoff valve to well, I do have a shut off valve, but I guess I'm not exactly sure how to Use it. But I know it's gone off because there's this situation, this, this, this, this where it shut off. That's kind of interesting. Yeah, let's dive into that. Let's dive into the times you shut it off, what was going on there. Success leaves clues. Let's pay attention to the times that you were able to shut it off and pay attention to what happened there. Were you more calm? Were you in a better environment? Were you more nourished? Were you getting better sleep? Were you drinking more water? I don't know, but I would love to. Because once you figure out what those things are, I bet your ability to start to shut those foods off intentionally goes way up. Your control over the shovel. It reminds me metaphorically, it's like, you know, if you got a water spigot outside and there's a bunch of bushes and there's a hornet's nest around and all the rest of it, right? And it's like, oh, crazy, I can't get to the shutoff valve. But you start slowly and systematically clearing it out of there, getting out, so it's easy to access, put a new big, you know, handle on it. And now you control it. And so I want to understand it. There we go. Robin says I had peace of mind. Okay. And again, the, the success clues are very similar. You start to notice patterns. Being calm, grounded, centered, peaceful, peace of mind. These are all huge, huge.
Patterns. I notice. And people have successfully changed their weight is being able to feel more calm and grounded. When you're more calm and grounded, you see the world differently, you think differently, you feel differently, you behave differently. So that's always the easiest way for anyone to change their weight is never mind learning and stressing yourself out more. If you just start to relax, calm down, get more sleep, drink more water, clean up your lifestyle, that alone will help most people lose some weight. But there you go, Robin. So again, success leaves clues. And so instead of in your mind focusing and trying to figure out why you're broken and why you don't have a shut off valve, I would focus all that energy instead into working on creating more peace of mind in myself. And that's just a fundamental part of program yourself thin and program yourself. Then we follow the goal weight pyramid.
Just gonna put taber in here or something. So in program yourself, then we, we go the goalway pyramid, mindset, lifestyle and eating. And so a lot of peace of mind comes directly from your lifestyle, you know. So again, we break it down into eight core habits. But, but when you Start to get those eight core habits, weave them into your lifestyle. A lot of things get better. You know, your mindset obviously has a big part of that as well. And you're eating, but lifestyle is one of the biggest pieces. So, yeah, start focusing on that. Robin.
Jody says, would I get value out of reading this book, Jim? And what's the name of it? For some reason, I don't want to say the name yet because it's not, like, all done. And I. I'm so paranoid, like, someone's gonna make a book and put in there tomorrow. I think it even matters. But anyways, yes, Jody, you're going to get tremendous value out of it. How about that? And that may sound crazy, Jody. Jody is og. I mean, Jody's like, she knows all the. All the training, has been doing it for a long time. A legit master, I would say, of this whole method. Yes, you're going to get a ton of value out of this book, Jody, because it's written, it's. You're going to love it. Like, out of anyone. You might like it more than anyone because I am loving this book. And again, I don't know if I am absolutely delusional. No one else has read it yet. I haven't given it to anyone yet, but every time I read it, I just, like, love it. So I don't know, I might be crazy, so it might just be a book that really matters for me. But I think you're all going to love it because. And especially you, Jody, because, like I'm saying, anyone that's really into the system, because program yourself. Then again, this is. It's really two main parts. There's really three main parts of program yourself then, but there's basically knowing what to do. That's the goalway blueprint, right? Knowing exactly what you need to do. How to think, live and eat like a thin, healthy person. So you need to know what to do, but you also need to know how to get yourself to do it. And I believe you also need support to do that. But the two main things is knowing what to do, how to get yourself to do it. That's the program yourself then system, primarily. So the goal weight blueprint goes through these three areas, right? Your mindset, lifestyle and eating, and knowing how to get yourself to do it. I always consider transformation. And so this is how to run your own mind. And so the book is 40 chapter, 40 chapters, four sections. And so there's section on mindset, blueprint, Lifestyle blueprint, Eating blueprint, Transformation blueprint, and they're all kind of laid out there. So it's the whole program, but it's just laid out in a kind of an interesting way. It's a light touch. It's an easy book to read. It's. You know what I mean? So it's not long. It's really easy. It's, again, it was written on the dao de jing because the dao de jingle, I would read like a chapter and I would just kind of think on it. You know what I mean? I would just. So. So that's what it's built for. It's built for almost meditation. It's built with subconscious communication in mind. And so it's a fun, light, easy breeze that's meant to be read a number, a number of times. But what it does is it puts all these ideas in your head. And the beauty is, even if you've never heard a program yourself, then you're going to get tremendous value out of it. But what it's going to be, it's going to be the opening.
Text, you know, that kind of brings you right into the program. And it's just a light, easy way to access it, though, again, it's hard to explain it, but you'll see. And I think you're gonna love it. That's what I think. But can you never know? Karen says, I can't wait. I need structure. Yeah, I get it, Karen. Yeah, structure. Structure is the most important thing, I think. I mean, again with. You probably can't see this because it's kind of a little font, but when it comes to the Galway Pyramid, when we talk about eating, there's three main areas. Awareness, structure and optimization. And we go through those three phases regularly. I mean, you never stop. I mean, I'm always developing awareness and working on awareness. I'm always looking to implement and add more structure into my success. And I'm always looking to optimize the whole process. So, yeah, that's a huge part of the whole thing for me.
Oh, I got you, Jody. Oh, I see what you're saying. Oh, yeah, yeah, I see what you're saying. Yeah, that makes sense. I thought you were saying, because, you know, the book, and it's kind of like it's a. It's a starter kind of book in a way. But, yeah, anyways, Da Jing, I don't know. It's a philosophy book, so I don't know. You know what I mean? I couldn't say. But for me, I will tell you, anyone that's in the program that really Wants to go deeper in kind of an obscure way. Yeah, the da.
And it depends what version you get. You know, there's a bunch of different versions of the daoing. So I have the one. Oh, you know what? I'm gonna get it for you. I don't think I have a version here. I know, I don't. I know for a fact. I don't. For a fact. Right.
I don't. Let me look real quick. I'm just gonna see. Real quick. I'll see it in two seconds if I got it.
Yeah, I don't have it here, but I will.
The Dao de Jing I have and I, it is specific because I've had other ones and I didn't, I didn't like them as much. So the one I have, it's like, it's like, it's big. So it's, it's like a 8 by 11 and it's got, it's kind of like a white cover, but it's got kind of pictures in it and stuff. I'll. I will get it. I gotta remember. I'll bring it tomorrow and I'll show you. But. Yeah. Will you like it or not? I don't know, but. But you will find if you read it. I think you'll find. To me, it's almost the. It's the deep philosophy behind Program Yourself then I would say the two deep philosophies behind Program Yourself Thin.
Let's talk about this. Because this actually happened. I always talk at the time of my life, I really kind of had a transformation, I would say. But a big part of it was this way of thinking. This Daoist way of thinking was huge for me. And so in my opinion, the two underpinnings philosophically of Program Yourself then are Daoism and Jeet Kune do and nlp. Right. Those are the two fundamental philosophical underpinnings. So NLP and Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune do is Bruce Lee's martial art. And he would study anything. He'd study boxing, fencing, any martial art, just because he wanted to get really good at fighting arts. And he would take what worked, discard the rest. And his idea was he was creating a one, one size fits one system, a plan for him to fight. And he would take what worked and didn't work for him. That's what he did. And NLP was the same thing. And I came across this stuff the same time I literally got to train Jeet Kune do again. Just another life just popping something in My lap. So NLP was the exact same concept that they would study all these different therapies and modalities, take what worked in service of making a great system. So those two things had the same philosophy and those are fundamental. And then Daoism's on the other side of that where it's really a way of thinking and approach. I have a hard time describing it. Daoism is this way.
Taoism is a lot of trying to describe the indescribable. So there you go. There's always a challenge in that. So anyways, that book for me was transformational. I don't know you don't mean it how that would feel for all of you, but you certainly would see a lot of similarities. The Dawapu. I would definitely recommend that book. That's one of my favorite books of all times.
It really, really is. Is a big deal to me. So the Dawa Pooh. I can show you that book. Oh, you know what?
I don't have it.
I thought I had it in my book. But anyways, Dalpoo recommend this book so much. I just. That's a, that's like a top five book. I would say.
Dalpu is so good. But yeah, Dao Jing I think is great too. So anyways.
Says me too. Really can't wait. Already thinking of sharing it as a Christmas gift, so. Oh yeah. Well, that's why I got this book. I, I definitely, I definitely got this book and it's going to be cheap as I'll get out. I, I have to figure out the pricing with Amazon. But it'll. It will not be more than $10. I know that for a fact. And so you know, it's. It's going to be as cheap as I can basically make it, you know. And. Yeah, but I was thinking that it's the perfect type of book to give as a gift. I, I think you're gonna love it, folks. I, it's. I love this book. I'm gonna leave it alone. I'm really not trying to hype it up. I genuinely, I were. I've been working on it so much. It's just in my head. I think it's great. I want to hype it up too much again. I'll build up expectations too much. I'll put. I'll type it in. It's not spelled. It's T, A O.
T A O T E C H I N G. But I will, yeah, I'll bring the COVID and I'll show it to you all because that specific one I think is the best. I don't. I just. It moves me. I love it, and. Yeah. So I will show it to you. Judy says, I was trying to donate to the Brick House. Thank you for being a part of that incredible organization. I was fortunate to make a donation to the Brick House. Thank you so much. Oh, yeah, I was fortunate. Thank you. Thank you, Judy. I really appreciate that. Yeah, I appreciate. Thank you, everyone. Everyone who made a donation. Thank you so much. Yeah, it's been really great. They've been letting me know about donations coming in, and it's just, if you don't know, the Brick House is in the town I live in, and I'm on the board there, and, man, I don't know. I just think it's the greatest organization. I genuinely mean this because it's like, we just help people, and it's cool. Like, we started this. I didn't start it, but it was started 35 years ago in response to a domestic violence incident, and it's just morphed into, like, a teen center. We started a food pantry. We offer family and parent services. It's like. I don't know. It's just so cool because we're just doing good stuff and we might be expanding, and it's just great. I mean, I don't need to tell everyone that it's. It's hard times for a lot of people, and so there's a lot of good organizations doing good work out there. And Brick House is definitely the top of the list. I mean, that money goes straight to the people that it's meant to help. You know what I mean? There's just so little overhead and almost like a victim of our success in a sense, you know? So thank you so much, Judy. I really appreciate it. Thanks. Anyone else who did that? Appreciate it. The Invincible Sing says, what is the science behind egg yolks? Modern studies have proved two eggs a day to be totally safe and healthy. But some myths are still there regarding the yolks. I'm the wrong person to ask. I gotta be honest. I just don't know the answer to that. I've heard so many different things.
I. You know, listen, I think. I think when we talk about nutrition, I almost think it's like a requirement that you have to talk about your biases. And my biases when it comes to food is that I am a vegetarian and I'm vegan. Ish. I do eat eggs, but I do believe that eggs. I do believe the science that we eat too many of them. You know what I mean, and so there's science that shows all sorts of things. So I don't know the answer to that. And I've had a lot of people tell me they're not a big deal. I don't know. I have high cholesterol just genetically, so that's a little bit of my take on it, too. That's another bias I go into it with. I personally, at this point in time, I average probably two egg yolks a week. I eat egg whites almost every day, and I really only eat.
2, 2, 3 egg yolks a week. You know, and I do that intentionally. I used to eat four, and I cut that down to two. And so, I don't know. I don't have right the answers. I certainly think I could eat more, you know, but again, I see different numbers. So I'm gonna. I'm gonna bow out of that because I do not have the. The knowledge to. To really say there. I've seen different things.
Ill mood says, hi, sir, please tell me my name. You know, the funny thing is, I think I said your name wrong.
Sunrise Sally says, it took me almost a year and a half to come off a creamer and sweetener my coffee. Now I drink it black. Yeah, okay. But Sunrise, I love. I'm so glad Sunrise just wrote that because that's. I love that time frame and I love that way of thinking because I know a lot of people who say, oh, my God, a year and a half it's going to take me to get off a creamer. I don't have time for that. Yeah, what else are you doing? Who gives a year next, a year and a half from now, you'll be thrilled. Because now Sunrise Shelley is probably, like, completely done with creamer, though, you know, So I say this all the time in different ways that if you can get off of, like, being obsessed with how fast things need to go and you give yourself some time, you can. What you can do is amazing. It all goes back to the saying that most people overestimate how much weight they can lose in a month and underestimate how much weight they can lose in a year. And I think that's just with change in general. So. Nice job, Sunrise. Shelley?
Yeah. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.
I got a salad coming up, but I am hungry. I'm hungry. I ate a lot yesterday. And when you eat a lot, you know, again, I don't know if it's for you. Everybody's different. But for me, when I eat a lot, the Next day I'm typically hungrier, so I was anticipating that, but here it is, I am a bit hungrier and I'm looking forward to eating. Eating my salad.
Barb says, how do you get, how do you eat the egg whites? I hard boiled eggs. I hard boiled eggs and I usually put those in my salads but I don't, I don't eat the yolks.
Again. I don't know. I don't know. But it's like for me with my cholesterol, I don't know. I feel good. I feel like really good. So there's that.
Yeah, I don't know.
Hey, what's up, Christy? He says, hey, Jim. Touch and base to let you know I'm shifting my thoughts. Nice job. Nice job, Christy. And Christie's in the program, you know, working it. It just keeps getting better and better again. Circle is coming around the pike. I got some real exciting things for people that are in the program. The next two weeks are going to be really exciting. There's some cool stuff coming your way communication wise. It's really gonna.
Really going to help the program just stay connected with it. So I can't wait. Yeah, the more I eat, the hungry I'm also. Yeah, yeah, right. I think a lot of people like that. And again, I mean you have to understand that part of your hunger is a relative thing. I think that's an important fact to understand. And a lot of what, a lot of what makes makes you hungry or full is stretch receptors in your stomach. So again, hunger is a relative thing. And so as you eat more, I was thinking yesterday, that gets so funny because I did, I literally had three meals yesterday. I normally do that. Then I had a big lunch, A big lunch and three hours later I'm eating a burrito. And it was like, it's so funny to me. But again, there's a thing called opportunistic veracity where there's all of a sudden you have the opportunity to eat something you like, you'll get hungrier. Right. It's kind of like the buffet effect. You can eat way more food at a buffet, you know, because there's different types of foods and psychological stuff going on. So hunger is fascinating, but it's more than you think it is. You know, Angel 11 says, what are your thoughts on juicing? I don't really like juicing, you know. Now again, you have to understand I, I, I did smoothies for years and years. I would never juice because I want the 5 fiber. The fiber to me is the literal Most important thing I'm after pretty much. You know, I think fiber is the thing that makes weight loss easier than anything else, even protein. And I think protein's important, but I think fiber is really the missing ingredient for most people. So, yeah, I'm not a fan of juicing. I mean, there's always unique situations where juicing may be the right thing, but for the average person with the average, you know, body metabolism, I would never juice. I want my food to be as natural as possible. Juicing is weird. To drink that much juice is weird and I have the fiber to slow it down. I just don't think it's good. So. But I also think everything on a scale. So, you know, if we're talking about drinking sodas and you're saying, what do you think about juicing instead? Then I think juicing is amazing. Great, okay. But again, within the whole spectrum of things, I think smoothies are healthier than juicing. I think salads are healthier than smoothies, you know, so again, there's, there's always usually ways to make things healthier. But I'm not a huge fan of juicing long term because I think it's, it's kind of a natural way.
To do that. You know, Judy says I'd love the oops. Judy says I'd love the subconscious subliminal seduction for water. Since listening to the 5 minute weight loss nearly every day, I love water and never had a taste for it. Oh, that's great, Judy. Yeah, yeah, that's a pro. You know, and even in the, in the program, there's hypnosis sessions for water. You know, I know a lot of people want to drink more water, but if you subconsciously hate water, you're not going to drink it. I know that may sound strange, but a lot of people subconsciously hate water. A lot of people subconsciously hate vegetables.
Yeah. Angel says I feel better, but I need protein. Yeah, but you can add protein, you know, but what you really need is fiber. Anyways, protein's great too. Again, protein's important as well. Everyone already knows about protein. Protein's just so ridiculous. Day and age, big protein is so ridiculous. I mean, they got protein drinks at Starbucks. 30 grams of protein. People are protein crazy. And I just think it's wild. I think it's so wild. Yeah. Angela says I wouldn't do it long term, just short term. You know, me, angel, me, though, I don't want to do anything short term. I don't like to think short term. I like thinking long term. So I only want to do things I'm going to do for a long time. I mean, changing behaviors is hard, you know. Yeah. If you love fruits and vegetables, wonderful. Then eat fruits and vegetables. Have a bigger salad. Eat fruits. Get the fiber in your body, though. I do not want to separate the.
I don't want to separate the glucose.
Molecules from the fiber, so I absorb it quicker. I want to eat the fruit the way it's meant to be eaten, with fiber. So that's my thoughts on it. But again, I mean, if there's some. Yeah, there you go. Christy. Chrissy said rather chew. Yeah, me too. And there's a lot of benefits to chewing as well. So one of them is increased GLP1. People that chew their food more produce more GLP1. So, again, I mean, all you need to know is the shortcut is eat more whole natural foods, the way they come out of the ground, and you're gonna be in good shape. Because there are just so many factors. I mean, even the chewing, the amount of chewing it takes to chew an apple versus drink apple juice. You know what I mean? Like, you're using your muscles. That changes physiological process inside of you. It changes psychological process, all of it. So, yeah. Mickey says, I love you on the Brick house. Thank you, Vicki. Appreciate that.
Yeah, thanks. Appreciate your knowledge. You're welcome. You're welcome. That's what I'm here for. Again, I. I try to come at this, you know, I'm just a normal person. You know what I mean? I'm not. Not really a scientist. I'm not even close to a scientist. I don't have a science brain, I would say. My brain doesn't naturally think like a scientist, so I study a lot of it and I come at it constantly. But I. I think.
I know how a lot of people look at it and where they get tripped up. That part I do know.
See?
So Shelly said I brainwashed myself three and a half years ago with Alan Carr's book To Quit Smoking. Yes. Yes. That's a great book. Love that book.
Yep. Lisa stopped. Yeah. Stop smoking, too. Nice. Yeah. Alan Carr, man. He really. He did something special, that book. I love that book. Now, I will say program yourself then. I created that far before Alan Carr, but I did end up reading that book and thought there's such great stuff in it. And I think the approach that he's talking about, I think it's definitely improving yourself then. The difference is, though, this. Though I will say this is the big distinction. Stopping smoking is stopping something. Right. So it's one. I mean it's, it's a bunch of habits within one container. I smoke, I'm gonna stop smoking. So the end goal is that you don't do it anymore and you live your life. Weight loss is nothing like that. And Alan Carr, again, he did write food and weight books. No one ever references them. Just, and I love Alan Carr, Let it be known. But they're, they're. If you're going to have any chance, especially if you're overweight. So if you're thin and healthy and you just are wired that way and you are that way, then, then that's a different thing. But if you're overweight and you want to become a thin, healthy person for the rest of your life, I don't see how there's any way that that passively is going to happen to you. Like there's no way you're going to read a book and now you're just thin and healthy. There's no way you're going to listen to a hypnosis session and now you're thin and healthy. No way. You have to think of like managing your weight very much like playing a musical instrument. And you can't just passively learn a musical instrument. You've got to put the work in. And I believe the exact same thing is true with your, your body, your weight, your health, your happiness. You've got to put the work in, you've got to participate. This is why, yes, in program yourself then there's a ton of hypnosis that you use. But the most important hypnosis is the self hypnosis that you do to yourself. I show you how to use the program yourself, then technique how to use a self hypnosis exercise to program your own mind. You have got to learn how to run your own mind ultimately, you know. So again, I think that's where Alan Carr. I love Alan Carr's smoking. It's got to be the most successful smoking program I've ever seen. But again, let it be known, no one ever references his weight loss program because it's a totally different thing. Smoking is about stopping something. Living at your goal weight is about doing something consistently for the rest of your life, many things consistently. And it's about stopping things too. It's, it's just a lot more complex.
It's again, it's the difference between saying, you know, stopping smoking versus learning to master the. Or learning how to play the piano. You know what I mean? Now don't get me wrong. I know for the person who stops smoking. It feels really hard, and I appreciate that. But technically, the, the musical instruments is a lot harder. I hope that makes sense. I hope you get what I'm saying. You know what I mean? It's just, it's a much more complex process because you're learning stuff, which has way more to it than stopping something. You know, technically stopping something is learning something new, but. But you get what I mean. I hope.
Bunny Vanilla says all or nothing mentality when we feel we ruined it. Yeah, I mean, the all or nothing mentality is the dieter mentality. So again, dieting is not your friend, folks. Dieting is a psychological operation that's been conducted on you by the food, processed food industry. Right? Weight Watchers was owned by Heinz. Jenny Craig was owned by Nestle Atkins Food Products, owned by the same company owns onions, pretzels and Cinnabon. Slim Fast, owned by the same company, owns Ben and Jerry's ice cream. None of these companies want you to lose weight. None of them want you to think like a thin, healthy person. They just want to fill your head with rocks when you go to the diet and then get you back to being a user when you're done with the diet. So most of you have never one time even learned how to manage your weight legitimately in your entire life. And it starts with the idea that most of you have no idea what the alternative to all or nothing is. You wear your all or nothing mentality proudly. That's how I hear dieters. I'm all or nothing, Jim. If I'm gonna do something, I'm do it all the way. I'm gonna jump in all the way. No, no half ass for me. All you full ass people, though, not getting any good results though, either. Why? Because you can't be all or nothing. Learning doesn't permit it. You can't just be perfect when you're not perfect. You can't just decide, oh, I'm gonna be. I'm gonna play golf. I mean, the best golf. Or starting tomorrow. Well, you can believe that all you want, but we'll see what happens tomorrow when you hit the golf course. And you're not gonna be the best, you're gonna suck.
And that's where we got to start with. We got to start with, you suck. How about that? You suck at eating well. You suck at running your mindset. You suck at living healthy, clean lifestyle. What do you want? Oh, you think you can just be great at it tomorrow because it's Monday? What? What world does it make sense that you can Just all of a sudden be great at something tomorrow because it's Monday or because you decide to? How about this? You suck at it. You suck at losing weight. You suck even worse at eating healthy. You suck even more at managing your emotions. You suck even worse at motivating yourself. You suck even worse at running your emotions and. And your habits.
What do you want? Do you. Am I lying? Are you really good at it? Are you really good at it, but you just haven't been doing it? That's what dieting would tell you. That actually you're really good at managing your weight and your mindset and your eating. You're really good at it. You just got to do it. What the. What does that mean? What does that mean? Think about that for a second.
Are you good at it? Are you really? What would lead you to believe that you're good at managing your weight?
No, I am, Jim. I just haven't wanted to do it. You don't want to be thin and healthy, huh? You know what I mean? So all or nothing is the goofiest in town. So program yourself. Then we're all or something. Yeah, great. You want to go all go, knock yourself out, do everything, do whatever you want to do. Great. I support you. But as soon as you can't do all anymore, let's land on something, because nothing's down there and it sucks. So if we keep doing something, at least we keep getting better. Then you go back to doing all a little while. Then you come back to something, and you just keep getting better. So all or something is the alternative. And program yourself. Then we use. And I would bet if you've never heard me before, you've never even thought the words all or something. You know, which again, is my main point to you all is that if you struggle with your weight, I know it's so tempting to think it's because you're broken or there's something wrong with you, but I would love if you would consider the idea that maybe you've never learned how to manage your weight effectively. Maybe you've never learned how to run your mindset, how to deal with your lifestyle, how to influence your reading strategically.
So might be helpful if you did. Uptown says thinking about something, someone's mentions for a second, then becomes obsessed with getting it.
Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, that's the hypnotic nature of our minds anyways. I mean, right? Croissant could be a. A hypnotic suggestion if I say it. And now all of a sudden, it's just stuck in your head and you can't stop thinking until you get one, you know? So learning how to run your mind. Yeah, very important because, yes, absolutely. Someone can say something or you can see a commercial, or you could just have an idea and all of a sudden you could be obsessed with it. So how are you going to deal with that? You try and fight it with willpower, try and ignore it. How's that working? You know? So I says, I'm a nighttime, I'm a nighttime snacker. Really bad. And I feel so much better when I don't do it, but then I do it. Yeah, I get it, Sally. But every time you do it, instead of reminding yourself how shitty it feels, you beat yourself up for how bad you are.
You know what I mean? If you stayed fixated with a magnifying glass on how much better you feel when you don't do it and how much worse you feel when you do do it, what happens? You start to reprogram your mind and you want to do it less, but what happens is you do it. Instead of focusing on how bad you feel, you focus on what a bad person you are. Yeah, that probably doesn't make sense to you, but it's important. I'm Bear. What's happening? How's it going? Seeing you a little while. Nice to see you. Ocean fun. How's it going? What's up? D Says, hi, Jim. I realized my biggest issue was over eating on the weekend due to boredom. This weekend I kept myself busier, so I wasn't as tempted. Great job. D. I'm proud of you. D.
There you go. Now, the secret is, and now again, I don't know how those strategies worked for you, but now the secret is to optimize those strategies. You know, make them easier, make them more enjoyable, make it more automatic, but great job. I think you find that when you dealt with a deeper problem, you probably, the eating probably just improved naturally. So great job. Anna says you're awesome. Thank you. And I appreciate that. AT says, what do you think of one meal a day? I think one meal a day for most people is ridiculous.
I, I would, it would be a nightmare for me. I, I, I don't know. I'm a master of food, but I like eating three meals a day. Most of the time. My big meals on the weekends, I usually only two, but yeah, one meal a day. Here's what I always say, folks. If you do one meal a day and you absolutely love it, like you can't wait to do just one meal a day, and you love one meal A day and you're satisfied and you're happy and you're loving it, then you keep doing it. But if you try to do one meal a day and you find that you get obsessed with food, that you can't stop thinking about food, that you never feel satisfied, that you always feel hungry, that you're always thinking about when you're going to eat, then I would say, what are you doing? That is not a good plan. So one meal a day for most people is going to be that experience. And if that's the experience, it's not going to serve you long. So what's the point? I think one meal a day is just one more stupid ass diet thing just to. It's, it's. Boy, it rolls off the tongue though, I'll give you that, you know, But I think for most people, one meal a day is a miserable existence is what I've seen. But to each their own, you know. Ocean Fun says thoughts on oatmeal and berries for breakfast. I think that's great. Yeah, make sure you get good natural oatmeal because I know there was an issue with some. They were spraying on the Quaker oats ones and berries are wonderful. Make sure they're natural. Berries tend to be more towards the dirtier fruits, you know, or berries. So the more money invested into organic berries is smart. You know, some, some stuff doesn't matter as much, but berries do. So yeah, but yeah, optimize the oatmeal, optimize the berries. And I think that's a great breakfast for most people. But the question is how long does it keep you satisfied? That's the. As long as it keeps you satisfied for a while. Everyone's different at says. What do you suggest? What should you eat? I mean, that's a really vague question, but I mean natural foods and whole natural foods. More whole natural foods, less processed foods. Just keep it really simple. Do you eat sugar? Yeah, I eat sugar, I moderate it, I treat it. I'm very respectful of it. I moderate my sugar like I do my alcohol consumption. I treat them very similarly because they're both detrimental to my health when they're overdone and it's very easy to overdo them for me. So yes, I do eat sugar, but I moderate it. Ash says I've been struggling to stay consistent. I don't what to do. I keep on going back to eating snack. Yeah, but I know Ash. I don't even know Ash, but I bet Ash, when you, when people say they're struggling to stay consistent I think that's funny because what they're really, usually what they're struggling to stay consistent with is some extreme difference in their behavior. So I had. There was someone on here last week, and they were talking about how they keep getting takeout food at night. And I. After work, they got done with work, they're too tired, they don't want to cook, and they get takeout. I said, okay, how often does this happen? Five days a week. And I said, and they go, I can never stop. I always. I'm going to try and stop and I can never stick with it. Yeah. I said, well, to go from eating five meals a takeout to zero meals of takeouts, very overwhelming and stressful. And so I'm going to bet when Ash says I've been struggling to stay consistent, it means that she never overeats or eats the wrong thing and never snacks. I bet it's an extreme difference, 100% improvement. And it's overwhelming. And that's why you're struggling to stay consistent. I bet. I bet. So if you shrunk the goal down a little bit now, I know no one wants to shrink the goal down because then you won't lose weight as fast. Right. But if you keep the goal of like completely making your eating perfect, you're not going to lose weight either because you're not going to stick with it. There's the paradox of weight loss.
Robin says food is everywhere. Yes. Food is everywhere. You really do have to figure out what you're going to do. Barbara is. I keep finding myself nodding in agreement with what you're saying. That's awesome. Yes. I'm saying a lot of things make a lot of sense. You know, that's what I'm here. I know, I know. I've been doing this for over three years. I know it makes me happy to be able to do this because I know that you're all good people who are struggling not because you have no control or willpower, but because you haven't learned a good system. So I love being able to share this. Angel down said, just cut out processed foods, eat fruits, veg. I even just cut portion sizes down for meat. I cannot cut that out. 100. Just learn to cook without all the oils, margarine, etc, learning.
Yeah. Great job. Angel.
Says when you see YouTube channels on cooking all bread, sugar, oils, etc, you can make great meals. Healthy. Yeah, absolutely. You can definitely improve so much. Barb says, that's so powerful. All or something. Yes. All or something's what it's all about, for sure, for sure.
Ash says, what's the biggest motivation for you?
Well, I'll share both my motivations because I have the motivation to be at my goal weight, the motivation to do this every day. And I guess in some ways they come from the same place. I think my motivation really does stem primarily from When I was 9, my dad died of a heart attack. He was 54. And so I think that that moment was really transformational for me, and it was the most traumatic thing that happened to me. And then at the same time, I remember saying, I'm not gonna let that happen to me. And I remember, you know, 10 years later, I was 50 pounds overweight. And so, you know, even when something's traumatic doesn't mean you're going to avoid it necessarily. And so my life, when I was 50 pounds heavier, I was in a real. I was in a pretty dark spot for me. And, you know, I was binge drinking, I was binge eating, I was overweight. It just didn't feel good. I felt lost. All this. And in my life, through no fault of my own, just a lot of things fell into my lap, like, literally in like a month or two. Hypnosis, yoga, meditation, Tony Robbins, personal development, guitar, martial arts. Did I say yoga? All these things fell in my life and just were transformational. And I've always felt so blessed by that experience and the transformation it made in me and how impactful it is, you know, so it's kind of those two pieces together that for me, weight is life and death. You know what I mean? So it's like, yeah, I want to look a certain way, but mostly my main motivation to be at my goal weight is I don't want to die at 54 like my dad did, if I can help it now, if it happens, it happens, okay? But I don't want to be the cause of my own early demise. And I have direct experience what that feels like. So I don't want that for myself or my kids or my family, people I love. And the other side is that it's so important that I feel like I have to help other people with this. You know, I think once you get this information, it's transformative, you know, so that's really where my motivation comes from, to be at my goal weight and then to do this stuff every day, you know, for the last 30 years.
Angel says when you cut out, take out for about even a month, when you go back, you don't want it unless you want it to be in the bathroom. Oh, yeah, true, true, true, true. Yeah. Once you clean your. Your eating and diet up, your body really does habituate and get used to it. So when you clean up your. Your diet now, it goes both ways. You know, you can clean your diet up and you might be feel discomfort for a couple weeks while you get used to it. But then once you get used to it, if you want to go back to the processed stuff, your body will feel the full effects of that. A lot of you. If you eat a lot of processed, ultra processed foods, folks, you got to understand, you've built up a tolerance, you know, just like substance abuse, you've built up a tolerance to it and you don't appreciate what it's doing to you anymore, you know, so. Yeah, those things do change, though. So anyways, all right, when we get out of here, thank you so much. Great questions, great comments. I appreciate all of them. If you're not in my world, click the link in my bio, go get the free hypnosis session I give you. Okay. If you're. I'll put it in. I should do this all the time, actually, for. If you're on, like, Facebook.
If you're on Facebook, I just put the link right in there. Facebook and YouTube, you can just click that link. But go get my hypnosis session I made for you.
Right? It's. It's really good. It's kickstart session. It's called the New Thin Me. And it's really meant to kind of kickstart your whole motivation and weight loss. And I give you a training, I give you a bunch of free stuff. I got a bunch of free stuff coming down the pike, so get on my list. The other thing is that this is. I do this every day, Monday through Friday. I'm usually here noon Eastern time, and I spend every day talking with you. So I'm happy to. You come every day and I will help you out. I will help you out and I will set you straight. I promise you, I. At this point, I don't think you're gonna throw me anything that is gonna throw me off track. I've been doing this for. I've done 6,000 private weight loss sessions. I've been doing this professionally for over 20 years. So whatever you're struggling or dealing with, and I know you feel like there's no answer, I promise you there is. If there isn't, I will let you know. But I've. I've literally never seen that, you know.
So. Yeah. And then if you like listening to this and you can't make the live. It's also recorded. So it's a podcast. It's called program yourself. Then go find any podcast platform and go check it out.
You see, angel says I have two biological parents, two adoptive parents, all gone at a young age. My mother in law is at the hospital right now with cancer. I eat super healthy now. Scares me. Yeah, I'm sorry to hear that, Angel. Yeah, that's a tough, tough situation you're in again, though. You know, we got to take the tough situations and use them to our. For our success. And again, I use my father's passing for success. I've transmuted it, you know, from something that was really painful and traumatic for me into something that powers me, you know, And I think a lot of us have to do that, you know, but that's how you do it. That's how you, you know, get an alchemy. We transmute pain into power. And.
That'S helpful. Yeah. Lena says, thanks. I love this real conversation. I appreciate saying that. Yes. Again, I try to be as, as real as I can be. You know, I just think there's so much. I think weight loss industry is just full of, you know, I mean, packed to the brim with. And it drives me crazy. So I'm happy to be able to share this stuff.
Ash says I want to start dieting again tomorrow. What advice will you give me? My advice would be don't do it. Don't. Don't start another diet. Never start another diet again. You know you're gonna start the diet. How many times have you started a diet, Ash? Why would tomorrow's diet end any different way? Is there something different about tomorrow's diet? Is there anything different about tomorrow than any of the past diets you've ever done? Are you're more motivated this time? Is. Don't say that. Yeah. What's different? Nothing's different. And if nothing's different, then the end's not going to be different either. So I would urge you to not diet. I would much rather see you go get the hypnosis session I give you. Watch the video I make. It's about 20 minutes, three steps to mastering your weight. Watch that. I would do anything but just start another diet that you failed on a million times. I would not suggest that. So literally anything other than starting another diet tomorrow would probably be a step in a better direction. So. All right, everyone have a super duper day and we'll talk soon. Bye. It.
