Jim Katsoulis argues that wanting to look better won't sustain weight loss, comparing it to telling an alcoholic to quit for appearance. Real motivation comes from health: living longer and feeling better. Looks should be third on the list, not first.

If you went up to an alcoholic or a drug addict and you said you should stop because you're going to look better, do you think that would be enough motivation to get them to stop? Okay, so then why do you think that wanting to look better is going to be enough motivation for you to lose the weight? And those deeper reasons are usually how long you're going to live in your quality of life while you're alive. These should become the one in two reasons why you want to master your weight and let looking better be number three.
