weight loss is like a rubik's cube

Jim Katsoulis explains why willpower and intuition fail at weight loss. Like solving a Rubik's Cube, you need an algorithm: a personalized system combining mindset, lifestyle changes, and eating strategies that actually work for you.

How your weight loss is like a Rubik's Cube. So when I was growing up, I was obsessed with the Rubik's Cube. I'd work on this thing all the time. And as far as I ever got with this, I'd get one side done on the side next to it, the same color, and I couldn't get any further. And I got so frustrated, I got sick of it. I'd stopped doing it. Now, decades later, I watched Justin Bieber on a video speed cube it. He did it in, like, five seconds. I said to my wife, what the hell? How come I can't do it? And Dustin Bieber can? And she goes, he's probably just following an algorithm. And I said, what? She goes, yeah, there's an algorithm to solve it. And I said, I. I didn't know that. And she goes, yeah, you have to follow the algorithm to fix it. So I looked up the algorithm, I followed it, and I saw the Rubik's Cube for the first time in my life. But the point of this story is that when I intuitively tried to solve the Rubik's Cube, I was doing it completely wrong. I was 100% going in the wrong direction. I would have never solved it the way I was going. The algorithm was completely different. The process of the algorithm was completely different than what I intuitively thought I had to do. And so what this has to do with your weight loss is that the strategy that you've been following to try and lose weight, of using your willpower to follow a plan perfectly, is a horrible strategy. It's just like me trying to do one side at a time, and it doesn't work. So the real secret is to understand the algorithm of weight mastery. And what that includes is a mindset component, a lifestyle component, and eating strategies that are built around who you are. And when you approach it this way, it's just as easy to master your weight as it is to solve a Rubik's cube.
