Jim Katsoulis explains why diets fail: they tell your brain what not to eat instead of what to do. Your brain can't navigate toward a goal it's never been shown. Restrictions create a focus on who you don't want to be, not who you do.

Why your brain can't follow your diet. Your diet is giving your brain directions by telling it where not to go. Think about this. When you say, I want to lose weight, everything that follows is negative. Stop eating this, don't eat that. Cut out the carbs. No more sugar, no more desserts. That's like me giving you directions to the store by saying, don't go backwards now, don't take a left. Don't go straight. Don't go straight some more, and now don't take a right. Your brain just checks out because I never told you where to go. I only told you what not to do. And that's exactly what dieting does to your brain. It's an entire system built on who you don't want to be and what you don't want to do. And your brain can't navigate towards something it's never been shown.
