Jordan Candlish reflects on attending Coachella and what the festival revealed about chasing external experiences for happiness. He contrasts the temporary highs of music festivals with the deeper, steadier presence that comes from internal practices like meditation.
State shifters podcast episode 8 Coachella Music Festival welcome to the Stage Shifters Podcast. Hey, what's up, Stage Shifters? Welcome back. I'm just gonna do a short solo episode today. This is the first solo episode that I've done. Just wanted to talk a little bit about some of the experiences I've just had in my life and then some of the lessons I've learned during those experiences. So I've just got back from a vacation. It was a pretty big vacation, actually. I've just got back from California, went to Coachella Music Festival. It was massive. It was huge. An amazing experience just out of Palm Springs. I was staying out in California, weather was beautiful. I got to hang out with some amazing people. And this music festival is the first music festival I've been to in a while. I've been to some pretty big music festivals in the past. I've been to Tomorrowland in Belgium a few years ago, a lot of big festivals back home in Australia. But this, this one was, was beyond anything I've ever seen. Not just the scale or the amount of people that were there, it was just the work that had gone on behind the scenes to prepare the performances from some of the artists, the, the audio, the visuals, the, the stage production, the live band, everything was just phenomenal. I've never experienced anything like it. And it really did blew me away, quite honestly. And the artists that performed were just. You couldn't get any bigger names and what, what was there? You know, you had, you had the weekend Beyonce, she brought out Jay Z. You know, we had eminem, brought out 50 Cent and Dr. Dre. And it really was. I've never seen artists of that caliber perform with such emotion and energy. And I wanted to talk about this experience that I've just had in this three day festival out in Coachella Valley and what really went on. Because my last music festival, I wasn't on this path of self discovery or inner transformation or inner work, whatever you choose to call it. I wasn't connected with myself. So the first. So when I went to Tomorrowland, I took drugs. I drunk a lot of alcohol, I smoked. And I used to think that that was required at music festivals. I used to think that was kind of the norm. Everyone did those things to enjoy the experience more. And this time around it was a bit different. I came into there, into the first day of the festival with somewhat of that old me still there because I did take some drugs and I did smoke, thinking that that's what I kind of needed to sustain a full day of Enjoying the music and enjoying the experience. And I soon realized when you're connected to something that's beyond the mind, beyond the body, something that you can't really describe, it's a feeling, it's an energy that you don't need anything to tap into. You can tap into it through meditation, you can tap into it through playing sport. You can tap into it by listening to music. And live music in particular is something that has tremendous power in shifting your energetic state. Now I've. On the second and third day when I realized that there was an energy that was getting created around these performances, that there is no drug in the world that can emulate that. It is an energetic shift that's coming from the emotion of the performer who's singing or the performance, the crowd, the sounds, the lights, the music, everything. The whole experience alters your state of reality. It shifts your energy to a whole new place, to a place where you can experience love, joy, passion, everything. Every emotional state that I associate with pure bliss that I often experience through meditation, I experience through live music. So I came to the realization that I no longer need drugs to go to experience any of these emotional states. And it's something that I think that's what most people are chasing when they take drugs or drink alcohol. They're trying to reach an energetic emotional place of bliss. Love, joy, passion. But these can be tapped into naturally. You don't need any. You don't need anything external to get there, because you can get there through closing your eyes and meditating. You can get there through listening to the music and allowing your energy to naturally rise to this vibration that has been created by music. So everyone has a. Has a way of connecting with something, whether that's through meditation, through music, or through yoga, or through exercise. Whatever your way is, allow it to bring you to deeper states of wisdom, awareness, passion, love, and joy. So I realized for me, there's not just one way. Meditation was always the way that I turned to when I looked to create presence and cultivate emotions, high emotional states, through transcending the mind and the body and accessing infinite energy in a. In a quantum world, beyond this world, this physical world that we live in. I was able to access that place while listening, while at Coachella, listening to these amazing artists perform their creative passion. So the way to do it is you honestly just have to allow yourself to be. To be shifted through the energy of the people around you. The crowd, the music, the experience, the energy. Because the collective energy that's created when thousands of people are in one place, experiencing a performance by one artist or a band or group, there's a collective energy that gets created that if you allow it, it will take you to a really, really amazing place. So I just wanted to share this amazing experience that I had. Come back, you know, realizing that we're all chasing the same place. We're all trying to get beyond the mind and experience emotional states like these, like these ones I've just mentioned. And it's a beautiful thing. And you can do it. You can do it in many ways. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to go travel to a music festival to experience these things. They can be done, like I said, through meditation, through connecting with yourself. So the external things, like drugs, music, like, like leaving, leaving and traveling, these are the external things that are going to put you into a altered state of reality. They're going to alter your consciousness. We must remember the external things are transitory. We're caught you if you, if that is all you have to reach these places of bliss, you're going to be constantly chasing them because they're always transitory. We set goals, we seek to achieve things. When we reach the goals, we might feel a shift in our consciousness for a few moments, maybe a few days. When you get that new car that you really, really want, you feel really good. You're like, oh, I've done it. I've got what I wanted, my car. But it lasts a few days and then you're back on. Maybe for a car, might be a few weeks or a few months, but regardless, you still, you default back to that mellow state of dissatisfaction. There's only one real way to reach infinite states of pure love and joy. That's through the present moments. Through meditating, it's through lose leaving the attachment to external things. So the most important thing that I then realized was I can take drugs, I can listen to live music, I can travel the world, I can indulge in the beauty of life. The physical world gives us so many amazing things. I can dine at the best restaurants, drink alcohol. I can do whatever I want on this external world as long as I know that it's not going to bring me lasting happiness. It's not going to bring me lasting love, joy and satisfaction because they're only temporary. Now, I don't have a problem with admitting that I indulge in these things because I think most people do. But this is what I want most people to realize. You don't need them. Don't need them. So once you realize you can tap into your own state of eternal love, eternal happiness in the present moment through seeing being grateful for everything that is around you being grateful for the life, the air that you breathe. Nature. These things are eternal. Nature is eternal. Sit outside, listen to trees, listen to the plant, listen to birds. I get just as much love, joy and happiness from doing that as I do going to Coachella, going to music festivals. So the experience was amazing. It transcended my reality. I was listening to this music and it took me to a place beyond my mind and body and it made me realize this. It is okay to do these things and experience these high emotional states. Enjoy life but don't be attached, don't rely, don't let them be your only way to experience these these feelings. So some words of wisdom for Saturday night out here in Canada and hope you enjoyed this short brief discussion. We look forward to chatting again soon. Bye for now.
