Kevin Surace argues AI reshapes jobs rather than eliminating them, pointing to previous tech revolutions that did the same. Since generative AI emerged three years ago, more jobs have been created than lost, though some roles like phone-based customer support will shrink as new human-focused positions emerge.
Why do you believe that AI can increase opportunity rather than reduce it?
I was around when the PC came to the desktop. I was around when we finally got laptops. I was around when we finally got email. I was around when we got smartphones, when we got the internet. At each of these stages, people said it's going to take all of these jobs, and instead it increased jobs but took away some tasks. And to date, over the last 3 years since GenAI hit, we have witnessed more job creation due to AI than the jobs that were lost to AI. And I believe this is going to be the case in much of the world. And, you know, there's no question if you built your career on answering phones for customer support, that task may be more limited in the future, but there will be demands for humans in other positions.
