Kevin Surace argues that as AI generates more music indistinguishable from human work, live performances become scarcer and more valuable. When AI floods the market with music, seeing a real person play an instrument on stage turns into something rare worth paying for.
I've been talking and writing about AI music for quite a few years. And of course, today, music generated with AI is arguably indistinguishable from that which is generated by crews of humans. And we could argue that point or not argue that point. But here's what I think the real point is. The more AI-generated music you have, the more interesting human-generated performances are. And that human-generated performances, human performances, human onstage performances, Broadway performances, bands, et cetera, become really, really interesting in an era filled with AI generation.
