Kevin Surace shows how GPT-4 can generate scenes and dialogue for screenplays, though not yet full movies. A writer can prompt it for ideas, flesh out characters, then shoot independently in cheap locations. This gives screenwriters who'd never reach Hollywood a real path to making their own films.

The next great filmmaker might not need a studio, a budget, or a greenlight, and the father of Siri just exposed why.
GPT-4 can write scenes but cannot write an entire movie today. But what it can do is you can say, I want to write a screenplay about the following topic. What might be the scenes? Then you can go to each of those scenes and say, here are the characters, write the dialogue for this scene. So it absolutely comes up with some very interesting ideas, not always the best dialogue, but interesting ideas today. And a screenwriter might use those as ideas for his own screenplay. What happens if that screenwriter today goes, for $100, I'll just make my own movie? I don't need Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, or Paramount to make the movie for me. I can make it myself. I've described this scene in New York City, this scene in San Francisco, this scene in the bedroom. I'm just gonna make it. Now, I didn't say it's good. I didn't say it's bad. But the 99-point-plus, you know, percent of screenwriters that never get a feature film can all have a feature film now.
