A short coaching monologue by Kim Zoller that frames how leaders give feedback. Using the metaphors of a 'stick' (punitive) and a 'carrot' (incentive), Zoller argues for giving clear, concise, authentic feedback to support others' growth and development.

Hi. So excited to be taking strides today. As we take strides, I want you to think about your relationship with other people when it comes to giving feedback and growing people. I was having a conversation with someone and they were told by their manager that they don't. They are not hard enough on their feedback. And so we had a discussion with it. And I want to ask you, you know, do you give feedback with hitting with a stick? Do you give feedback with leading with a carrot or do you give clear, concise, authentic feedback? Feedback. And it's a good question for all of us to realize that really when we make strides, that's what we do. We don't hit with a stick. We learn how to knot. If that's how we have learned. We don't hold a carrot for people because it goes away and the carrot just keeps getting bigger. We're clear, we're concise, we're authentic in our need and want to grow and develop them.
