A business owner explains why he loves running a septic and porta potty company, despite the stigma that makes these businesses hard to sell. He contrasts the perception problem with more conventional businesses like cookie shops, revealing what actually makes the work profitable and worthwhile.
Septic and porta Potties. You know, everybody laughs and jokes around about this one. I love this category. Usually the porta potties are, you know, worth roughly what the purchase price of the business is. Nobody wants to do it. Crappy job, hahaha. We get it, you know, but it's a moneymaker. It is a huge moneymaker, right? So we've looked at a number of these. It's look, I helped a lady going through a process in the Charlotte market and she's like, our kids absolutely were embarrassed of us. Their whole high school career we were known as the porta potty. People like the Porta John's I think is what she called them. She's like, like it was, I thought it was gonna be really easy to sell the business. It was hard to sell the business because nobody wanted it. If you could own a crumbl cookies that makes $500,000 or you have a septic pumping business pumping poop that makes $500,000, which one are you gonna go with? Right? And so if all things are created equal, give me the crumble cookies. It's easier. It's like, it's fun it cookies. Why would I want to be in this one versus this one? And so that's what they don't realize, right? People don't realize when they go to sell a business what they're up against until they're at market. But I love it for that exact same reason. If you're willing to get dirty and you're willing to own something like that, that's a lucrative business.
