Jacqui Ioli breaks down what makes housework a hot mess: overwork (too many steps), underwork (mismatched skill level), rework (doing it wrong then redoing it), and workarounds (no correct path exists). These four factors collide to create household chaos.

And hot mess really describes when you have all 4 of these things happening simultaneously. So let me explain each one and then we'll explain how they interact. So there's overwork, which is too much work and too many steps. There's underwork where you don't have to be you to do it, meaning your level of skill and training. There's rework. It wasn't done right. So you have to do it over. And there's workarounds, which workarounds is a very important thing. Workarounds is not following the process because it's not working, either deliberately or it just doesn't achieve the goal. Or the most important thing is no correct path. Let me repeat that: no correct path is a type of workaround. So when you don't know the correct path, that is a significant contributor.
