19 Oct 2017 · 0 min
Episode 176, 'How To Be Your OWN GURU' — Lori Harder (host of Earn Your Happy) encourages listeners to cultivate inner guidance when making decisions. She advises creating quiet space through short meditations, walks (especially 60-minute nature walks), journaling, and sleeping on questions to let answers surface. She emphasizes using external teachers and mentors for input but ultimately listening for what feels right internally; she shares a personal example about deciding whether to accept a speaking invitation. The episode includes sponsor messages for blinds.com (promo code: earn) and Shopify (1$/month trial at shopify.com).

And it's time for another quickie because there's always time to fit in inspiration. So again, I want to thank you guys. It means the world to me to have you here to chat with and I am loving seeing all of your insta stories. It's like I get to actually see who's listening and I get to feel like I am on a walk with you or on the treadmill or whatever you guys are doing driving in your car. It's really awesome to get in touch with you guys and know know what you want to hear and that what we're sharing and all of the guests are making a massive impact. So one of the things I would love is if you would reach out to one of your favorite guests and let them know about the podcast that you absolutely loved. And also some things that really help are when you rate and review and subscribe to earn your happy. And you have to do this from a computer. So if you've ever tried it from your phone and you reach out to me and said I tried to do it, that's why it did not work. So you have to do it on your computer. And that really means the world to us because it helps me get awesome guests onto this podcast. So that is the difference, you guys, is when you do that. That's how I've gotten amazing guests on this podcast, is they check out who is listening and it means the world to me that you do that. So, you know, I've been thinking about this topic I'm going to talk to you guys about and it is about always being your own guru. And I know Tony Robbins has a documentary out about himself basically with a title. I think it's be. I think is it be your own guru? I think it is. And the reason that I want to chat with you about this is because as I'm Writing my book, I actually have one of my titles chaptered that or, I'm sorry, one of my chapters titled that. Whatever, say it backwards. We don't need to edit, right? It's real life. So I have one of my chapters titled that. And also when people come to Bliss Project, it's one of the main things that I like to start with because as they are listening to the wisdom from all of the different people and women on stage, and as they are really taking in all of the information at the end of the day, I don't care what we're reading, I don't care what we're learning, I don't care who you are learning from. You have inner wisdom and you know what is best for you. Sometimes we can't hear it right away, and sometimes it is easier to listen to other people and you say, oh, yep, that sounds right. But maybe we don't let it settle. So when we're making massive decisions in our life or when we're trying to find clarity, it's great if something feels good, it's great if you're at Bliss Project and I say something from stage that feels impactful and you feel like that's the answer. What I really hope with any teacher that you have or anyone that you're listening to or any book that you're reading, is that you give it time to hit you and settle and to really ask yourself, is this how I feel? Is this right for me? And if anything, you're just going to get extra confirmation. So a lot of times what happens is the reason that we're not sure of different things in our life is because we are not ever slowing down. So I find that people who are in fast speed mode or launch mode all of the time or go mode, or just massive hustlers in their life and business, sometimes they're not necessarily making decisions from that inner guide, that inner wisdom. And believe me, the reason that I'm talking about this today is because I am taking my own advice. I've needed to make some big decisions and I have not been giving myself the space to be quiet. So it's really easy for me to just listen to other people's opinions about how they feel about it and say, yeah, you know, that makes sense, and that sounds right. But maybe it's not what I feel in my gut or what my wisdom is telling me. And people are never, for the most part, ever trying to harm you. So don't ever think that when, you know, people are giving you advice, it's because they're not looking out for your best interests. Always think the best, but give yourself space to really sit and let it settle. Right. So with these decisions I have in my life, I've been going for some extra walks or some extra runs or sitting in meditation a little bit longer, sitting in some quiet space because otherwise I can't hear. It's like I can't actually hear even how I feel. So I take the easy way out by listening to people that I maybe kind of put on a pedestal. Even though we know we shouldn't do that. Right. And. Or I listen to people who I adore and who are definitely, who definitely have massive wisdom. But if I'm not letting it settle, then I'm just, I'm not making decisions based off of what is 100% right for me. Right. So I just want to have you guys give yourself the space today, you know, because I know a lot of people in my life who read books or go to events or maybe they have different guides or spirit guides or coaches or whatever it is. I mean we all, so many people have different modalities of people that they like to process with and listen to. And I, I think that's important. I have a coach, I love to go to events, I love work with people. I have mentors, I'm in masterminds. But at the end of the day I am going to see what comes through for me because you're getting all of this information in, but what is landing, what is sticking and what feels good. And sometimes you're not going to be totally clear, but you're going to have a bit of a detector that gives you a little bit more clarity than you had before. You're going to feel a little pulled towards something more than you typically would. So give yourself the space for that. And I was just kind of researching different things that you could do for this and it's pretty much all the things that I do. So if you guys sit and give yourself some space. So I really think that 10 minutes is the minimum if you're looking for an answer. 20 minutes is good. Sometimes 30 minutes of quiet or going for a walk in nature. I find about a 60 minute walk in nature. You're going to get some answers at the end. And also there's so much to being said about sleeping on it because your brain actually the scientifically proven, if you give it a question at night, so maybe you write it in a journal or you ask, processes it while you are sleeping. So a lot of people say why don't you sleep on it? Because your brain will go to work to help you try to find an answer. And a lot of times you'll wake up in the morning with a lot more clarity. So maybe at night, what you can do is write your question down, think on it, meditate on it, pray on it. You know, ask for Holy Spirit or whatever you believe in, guidance to wake up feeling a bit more clarity around the topic or around the subject. And also, if you're feeling clouded around certain things, make sure that if someone's giving you a lot of advice or someone's trying to sway you in one way, you might need to take a break from talking to them. Because no matter, even if they think they have the best intention in mind, they could be swaying you in a direction that may not be for you. So give yourself space all together in your life, not just in your mind, but actually in your physical space. Because sometimes if someone is leaning towards one way, you're actually going to feel that, and you're going to be pulled towards that answer, towards that energy. So complete space. If you're making big decisions in your life and sit in that quiet meditation, sit in that prayer and really repeat to yourself, I have an inner guide. I'm connected to something bigger. I know what's right for me. I have the wisdom within. So repeat these things to you. I have the wisdom within. And sit and listen to see if you feel a certain way. And I think a lot of clarity can come around when we just do these things and even saying the different decisions out loud. So maybe you're deciding between two things and asking which one feels better. Just asking yourself a ton of questions, writing it in a journal, writing the two decisions down or the three decisions down, and then even doing the process of elimination, right, saying, okay, if someone took this decision away from me, how would I feel? Would I feel relieved or would I feel really upset? And then trying the other one, would I feel relieved or would I feel upset? Right, and you'll get a feeling there, and that's gonna be really, really telling for you guys. I just did this with an event that I was asked to speak at, and my gut was just, like, very nervous about it. I was freaking out, like, wow, what am I thinking? I don't even know. Like, why am I being pulled to this audience? What's going on this far outside of my comfort zone? And then I went on a really long walk, and I said, what if the opportunity was taken away from me? And. Or what if it. What if it came through that they didn't, they decided that they didn't want me as a speaker and I was like, I would feel really, really sad because even though this is a completely different audience than I'm used to speaking in front of, I do believe that I am being called there for a reason. And my message is being called there for a reason. And so much wisdom came through from that walk, from that quiet space, from not listening to anyone else in their opinions, and from just asking myself questions and doing that Takeaway with the holidays.

So sometimes my answers come quick, sometimes they take longer. I'm also sitting on another couple decisions right now that have been taking me a couple weeks of constant question asking and constant asking for guidance, Holy spirit, clarity, whatever you feel called to, asking for, asking your higher power, asking, God, asking, source, whatever you believe in. And I have to tell you, I think I'm starting to get my answer in broken up chunks. And it came to me on a run. So if you can kind of see the theme here, I get a lot of answers in quiet meditation and prayer and also in a lot of alone time, movement in nature. And I have to share with you because we're on the subject. Earn youn Happy actually came to me in a meditation after asking what's next on for me what am I supposed to do? And the podcast didn't come through, just the title Earn your Happy. And for about a good year I thought Earn your Happy was supposed to be my book. And all of a sudden one day I was like, I think I'm supposed to do a podcast. I have no idea why. I've never been drawn to wanting to do a podcast, but I feel like I really want to be connecting with amazing people on a weekly basis. I'm feeling really, I was feeling dry like I was feeling when I. I mean I was feeling a bit disconnected, a bit uninspired. I was feeling like what's a great way for me to connect with really high level people that I would never normally be able to get in touch with. And it just came through like, hey, dummy, a podcast. And I say dummy with love. So hey, gorgeous, a podcast, right? Switching that self talk. And all of a sudden I had that earn your happy title and I was like, oh my gosh, it has been here all along. So wisdom can come in chunks like that, right? It can come in these Rand downloads, but when you feel them like I'd written earn your happy down, I had talked about it, I was like, I have no idea what it is, but I know it's something because it came through so clearly for me. So this is happening all throughout your life and it's constant messages for you if you just tune in and really listen. But the. The thing I want to drive home to you guys is you always know best. You always know best. And the more that you ask yourself questions and the more that you follow your own wisdom, the more your own wisdom will show up for you. So always be your own guru, you guys, because you are the smartest person that you know for yourself. So, you guys, I just wanna thank you again. I have such crazy gratitude for you and I know that I say that a lot, but it is just coming through, like, I don't know, it's bonkers for me lately and I really. Well, that's just one more message, right? The more gratitude I have for the. The things that I do, the more things I get to be grateful for. So I'm sending you guys so much love, and if you like this episode, I hope that you share it with your friends. And until next time, earn your happy. Bye, everyone.
